Mummification - Introduction•In about 2600 B.C., the Egyptians had a process of preparing mummies.

•It takes about 70 days.

•the stomach, liver, lungs, and intestines were removed from the body through a cut on the left side of the abdomen.

•The heart, which the Egyptians considered intelligence, was usually left in place.

• In some cases, the brain was removed with a hook through a hole pierced through the nose.

The angle of the hook to take out the brain

•The body and organs were covered with natron

•This substance acted to take out moisture out of the body

•After that the body was dried, it was treated with perfumes and resins that helped seal out the moisture

•The body could be stuffed with straw, linen, moss, or other material to give it a more lifelike appearance

•The body was then wrapped in many linen bandages

•First the head and neck are wrapped with strips of fine linen. Then the fingers and the toes are individually wrapped.

• the arms and the legs will be wrapped separately • during the layers they add amulets to protect them in the afterlife.

•A priest would read spells as the mummy is being wrapped.• these spells would ward of evil in the after life

•Then the legs and arms would be tied together•The scroll of the dead would be placed in the hands•More layers of bandages would be placed and resin would keep it all together•A cloth with the image of Osiris would go over that

•A last cloth would be placed and it would have strings of cloth would go all over the body•Then it would be placed in coffin(s)

•The coffins were made of wood or stone

•They were often shaped like the mummy and decorated. •Buried in underground tombs.

The internal organs were placed in the tomb in jars called canopic jars.

•Rich people could afford more elaborately prepared mummies than the poor could.

•The ancient Egyptians also mummified Pet cats and dogs.
