    INTRODUCTION

The CRD-400 is a mono-channel hand-held readout capable of reading different types of SISGEO instruments. The CRD-400 can not perform measurements with removable inclinometer probes.

For more information on the family of SISGEO instruments that can be read with theCRD-400, see Appendix.

The CRD-400 and its accessories come in a package upon which are indicated the contents and main technical characteristics of the unit. This package can also be used for the storage of the CRD-400 when it is not in use.

    BATTERIES

Each CRD-400 is powered by internal rechargeable NiMH batteries (4 x AA, min. 2700 mAh). If properly used, NiMH batteries have a rated life of up to 1000 charging cycles. However an effect known as "memory effect" could diminish the battery life. This effect may occur if the batteries are left on charge for a few days or if they are repeatedly partially discharged. To prevent this problem, we recommend using the charger provided with the CRD-400 and performing a complete battery cycle (fully charge and discharge) at least once a month.

To replace the battery, remove the lid of the battery compartment on the back of the readout by unscrewing the two screws.

    BATTERY CHARGER

The charger supplied is controlled by a microprocessor that runs a quick charge in less than 3 hours. The range of the input voltage is universal (100-240 V~).The charger uses a method called "-dv detection"; this method relies on the fact that the voltage of the NiMH batteries decreases when they are fully charged. This voltage drop is detected when the voltage fall to a certain percentage of the maximum: in this case the charge will be automatically interrupted. When the reduction of voltage does not occur, the charger has a safety timer that will stop charging in any case, after a given period of time, to avoid battery overcharging. If the batteries have not been used for a long time, the decrease in voltage may occur in the first part of the charge cycle; for this reason there is a timer inside the charger to prevent "dv-detection" in the first few minutes of the charge cycle.

The batteries should be recharged only when they are fully discharged and not before. Charge them before they are completely discharged only when it is necessary to use the CRD-400 immediately.

A fully charged battery allows for continuous use of the CRD-400 for at least 6 hours: take this into account before going to the work site and if greater autonomy is needed, bring a spare battery pack.

DO NOT perform measurements while the CRD-400 is being charged.Never use any charger other than the one provided.

    HOW TO USE THE CHARGER

To recharge the batteries, the charger must be connected to the "Charger" connector on the readout, and only then should be connected to the wall outlet.

    Battery charger Charger connector

The LED on the charger will be yellow before rapid charging and orange when charging is underway.

When charging is completed the LED will be green. A full charge takes approximately 3-4 hours.

The charger should not be connected to the readout for more than 12 hours. If the battery voltage is far below normal, the LED will indicate "error", flashing green and orange. In this case you must replace the batteries because they could be damaged.

The charger may become warm during the charging process, so it is always necessary to leave adequate ventilation space around the charger.

    Do not use the charger if:• the charger has been in contact with liquid;• the charger is damaged;• the cable or the charger plug is damaged or frayed;

After charging, disconnect the charger from the wall outlet only then disconnect the "Charger" connector from the CRD-400.

    CHARGING CYCLE AND LED DISPLAYS

After connecting the charger to the wall outlet, the LED will be orange for the first 5-7 seconds, becoming yellow when initialization and analysis begin. If the battery is connected, the actual charging will begin a few seconds later, when the LED turns orange. When charging is complete, the LED will turn green after about 4 seconds: once the -dv has been detected, the start of the final stage of charging is indicated by a flashing green and yellow LED. The LED will be green during the trickle charge.

    TAKING CARE OF THE BATTERIES

What to doFully charge the batteries before use, using only the supplied charger; it can provide enough power to safely charge the unit completely. When charging the batteries for the first time, or when the batteries have not been used for a long time, it is best to recharge at least three times consecutively to achieve maximum efficiency over time.If the batteries will not be used for a long time, it is best to remove them from the CRD-400.When storing batteries for long periods, it is best if they are charged at least 30-40% of their capacity and are stored in a cool and dry place. For greater efficiency, it is recommended to keep the contacts of both the batteries and the compartment where they are lodged clean and dry. When battery performance decreases substantially, it is recommended to replace the batteries with identical models or ones with equivalent features.

What not to doUse a charger other than the one provided.Recharge batteries of different capacities.Recharge batteries of a different or non-homogeneous state of residual discharge.Overcharge the batteries: this may determine a rapid decrease in their efficiency, with consequent reduction of their useful life.Short-circuit the batteries.Drop or expose the batteries to unnecessary shocks.Try to open or disassemble the batteries.

    READING THE INSTRUMENTS

    • Connect the flying cable supplied to the "Sensor" connector on the readout.

Never force a connector into a port. Verify that there are no possible obstructions in the port. If the connector and port are not easily connected, they are probably not compatible. Make sure the connector is compatible with the port and you have positioned the connector correctly in relation to the port.

    • Connect the wires of the instrument to be measured to the alligator clips of the flying cable.

To avoid damage to the CRD-400 or the instrument, make sure you do not ever cause a short circuit with the alligator clips of the flying cable.Make sure the cable is properly connected and that the type of instrument is consistent with the type of measurement which has been selected.

    • To read the instruments, just select the desired type of measurement in the main menu. The CRD-400 shows the wiring diagram for SISGEO mono-channel instruments:

The wiring diagram shows the functions (+ Vcc, + Out, etc.) of each connector pin: refer to the calibration report of the instrument to be read for the proper correspondence of functions. The colour scheme is purely indicative and in any case, refers to the colour of the mono-channel instrument cables or to channel A in the case of two-channel instruments.

  • 21BACK INDEXMultipurpose Readout Unit CRD-400 - Rev.0

    • Press the RUN key to begin measurement of the instrument connected to the readout.

    Read value

It is always advisable to wait at least 10 seconds before noting the displayed value to allow the stabilisation of the electronics of the instrument measured. If the input signal exceeds the full scale, the readout will interrupt the measurement to avoid damage to the readout and/or the instrument.

Press the RUN key to interrupt the reading of the instrument.Press the ENTER/ESC key to interrupt the reading and return to the previous screen.

During the reading, the measurement unit shown on the display can be changed by pressing the SWITCH key repeatedly; the engineering unit must be configured previously in the “Polynomials” menu.

    When a Ratiometric reading is performed, pressing the kN key allows you to choose between the following full scales of the standard SISGEO L2XXVXXX cells:• 2.0 mV/V• 300 kN• 500 kN• 750 kN• 1200 kN• 1500 kN• 1800 kN• 2500 kN• 3000 kN• 5000 kN• 10000 kN

Conversion to kN is done by calculating a sensitivity of 1.5mV / V F.S. (for F.S. from 300kN to 1500kN) and a sensitivity of 2mV / V F.S. (for F.S. from 1800kN 10000kN); the zero reading of the instrument is not considered. The measurement in kN is therefore considered merely indicative.

    READING A BI-CHANNEL INSTRUMENT

To read a Bi-channel instrument, proceed as follows:• Consult the Calibration Report of the instrument issued by SISGEO to verify the wirings.

    • Connect channel A (in the example of the certificate, RED wire= + loop, BLACK wire= -loop), respectively to alligator clips A and C of the CRD-400 as described in the Current Loop wiring diagram of the CRD-400.

    • Then, after reading the A channel, repeat the procedure by connecting the B channel (in the example of the certificate WHITE wire= + loop, GREEN wires= -loop), respectively

to alligator clips A and C of the CRD-400 as described in the Current Loop wiring diagram of the CRD-400.

will decrease the backlighting of the LCD to save battery power.

Set the seconds to zero to disable the function.

    • Backlight [%]: This is the percentage of backlighting currently selected, and which will be set the next time the unit is turned on. It can vary from 49 to 100%.

Note that battery consumption is proportional to backlighting

    • Shut Down [s]: This is the time limit after which, when a key is pressed, the readout turns itself off, informing the operator with an acoustic signal that shutdown is starting. It can be set from 30 to 3600 seconds.

Set the seconds to zero to disable the function. In this case the readout does not ever shut itself down.

    • Date: Allows you to set the date of the readout, which is visible in the status bar. Pressing the ENTER/ESC key, the virtual keyboard appears. Set the date in dd / mm / yyyy format.

    • Time: Allows you to set the time of the readout, which is visible in the status bar. Pressing the ENTER/ESC key, the virtual keyboard appears. Set the time in hh: mm: ss format.
