Multimedia database provide features that allow users to store and query different types of multimedia information.

The following types of multimedia data are available in current systems today:

◦ Images

◦ Graphics

◦ Animations

◦ Video

◦ Text / Document

◦ Audio

◦ Composite or mixed multimedia data

Application may be categorized based on their data management characteristics as follows:

◦ Repository applications: Stored multimedia data for retrieval purpose.

Organized into hierarchy of storage level (local disk, tertiary disk, optical disk).

◦ Presentation applications: Delivered multimedia data to temporal constraints.

Ex: video and audio.

◦ Collaborative work using multimedia information: Execute a complex design task by merging drawings, fitting

subjects to design constraints, and so on.

Multimedia information embrace a the following set of issues:◦ Modeling:

Modeling the structured and contents of data.

Design:

The conceptual, logical, and physical design.

◦ Storage:

Multimedia data on standard disk-like devices presents problems of mapping to device hierarchies, buffering during the input/output operation.

◦ Queries and retrieval:

Multimedia types are retrieved based on containing certain object or activity, it is called content-based retrieval.

Ex: video clip where a soccer goal is scored by a certain player.

◦ Performance:

DBMS verify the query optimization for multimedia data.

performance constraints are determined by the user.

Modeling data content has not been an issue indatabase models and system.

EX: Insurance company’s accident claim report asmultimedia object, it includes:

(images of the accident, structured insurance forms, audio

recordings of the parties involved in the accidents,

the text report of thee company’s representative, and otherinformation).

Which data model should be used to represent this data? An How should

queries be formulated against this data?

For hyperlinks data modeling, the system should take

into account different variations.

When content based multimedia data is needed,

query mechanism access to the link and link

associated data.

◦ Using image processing techniques.

◦ Assigning index terms using manual indexing.

Information retrieval is based on 3 indexing schemes

Classificatory systems.

Keyword-based systems.
