Baker Oil Tools 19 MULTIZONE COMPLETIONS All oil and gas wells with completions designed to address two or more zones of in- terest involve several issues requiring detailed review for a satisfactory completion design. Not only must the completion design address the characteristics of the well's producing zones, but it must also address issues of selectivity and ensure compati- bility of all devices making up the completion. The completion must not only be eval- uated as it stands, but also in consideration of the run in and setting procedures. Wellbore pressures, temperature, tool setting, tool movements, tubing movements, rotational limitations, and landing are all among the necessary considerations. Multizone completions might involve only single string packers or a combination of dual string packers, depending on the producing and isolation requirements. In addition, flow control equipment is normally necessary for tool setting and testing as well as selective flow and circulation. It is important that all flow control equipment be carefully selected to meet production specifications and profile compatibility. Similar to flow control equipment, the selection of subsurface safety equipment must be selected in consideration of the entire system and run in procedures. The safety valve can incorporate the same selective profiles as the flow control equipment, which provides virtually unlimited flow control positioning options with no additional restrictions to the ID. Issues of space out, tubing movement, and body movement are increasingly important as the complexity of the completion increases with multiple zones and more extreme conditions. Packer selection might include all retrievable, all permanent, or a combination of retrievable and permanent mod- els. Regardless of the specific design criteria for a given Multizone Completion, it is most important that the design be developed as a "system", both for the well's planned operation and the ability to successfully put the system in place. Coopera- tive detailed planning between the operator and service company well in advance of the installation is key to the success of complex Multizone Completions. MULTIPLE ZONE

MULTIZONE COMPLETIONSAll oil and gas wells with completions designed to address two or more zones of in-terest involve several issues requiring detailed review for a satisfactory completion design. Not only must the completion design address the characteristics of the well's producing zones, but it must also address issues of selectivity and ensure compati-bility of all devices making up the completion. The completion must not only be eval-uated as it stands, but also in consideration of the run in and setting procedures. Wellbore pressures, temperature, tool setting, tool movements, tubing movements, rotational limitations, and landing are all among the necessary considerations.

Multizone completions might involve only single string packers or a combination of dual string packers, depending on the producing and isolation requirements. In

addition, flow control equipment is normally necessary for tool setting and testing as well as selective flow and circulation. It is important that all

flow control equipment be carefully selected to meet production specifications and profile compatibility. Similar to flow control

equipment, the selection of subsurface safety equipment must be selected in consideration of the entire system and run in procedures. The safety valve can incorporate the same selective profiles as the flow control equipment, which provides

virtually unlimited flow control positioning options with noadditional restrictions to the ID.

Issues of space out, tubing movement, and body movement are increasingly important as the complexity of the completion increases with

multiple zones and more extreme conditions. Packer selection might include all retrievable, all permanent, or a combination of retrievable and permanent mod-

els. Regardless of the specific design criteria for a given Multizone Completion, it is most important that the design be developed as a "system", both for the well's planned operation and the ability to successfully put the system in place. Coopera-tive detailed planning between the operator and service company well in advance of the installation is key to the success of complex Multizone Completions.

SINGLE STRING SELECTIVE COMPLETIONThe single string selective completion permits selec-tive production, testing, stimulation, and isolation of various zones. This example shows a completion using permanent or retrievable seal bore packers and locator tubing seal assemblies. The use of seal bore packers is one method that allows perforating and testing of each zone as the well is completed progres-sively from the bottom up. Selectivity after completion is accomplished by opening and closing sliding sleeves between the packers. Blast joints located adjacent to producing zones resist the erosive forces of the produced fluids.

ONE TRIP SINGLE STRING SELECTIVE COMPLETIONThis selective completion allows for a single trip flanged up completion utilizing HS™ Hydraulic Set or FH™ Hydrostatic Set Tubing Retrievable Packers along with sliding sleeves. The completion allows for commingling of zones or separate production, isola-tion, testing, or stimulation of individual zones. Selec-tivity is accomplished by opening and closing sliding sleeves between the packers. If selective set hydrau-lic or hydrostatic set packers are utilized, then each packer can be selectively set and individually tested to ensure proper isolation between zones.

HIGH PRESSURE DUAL STRING COMPLETIONCompletions of high pressure Multizone wells normally dictate the use of permanent packers. The lower packer isolates the lower payzone, with produc-tion directed through the packer's seal assembly, pro-ducing through the long string side of the latching-type parallel flow tube. Flow from the upper zone is produced through the bore of the upper packer direct-ed into the short string bore of the Model A™ Parallel Flow Tube. Slimline T-Series™ Tubing Retrievable Safety Valves allow for dual completion strings above the Parallel Flow Tube and provide the automatic shut-in of the well in the event of damage to the tree or tubing strings above the packer, as required in off-shore completions. This installation requires an alter-nate upper bore in the top packer to provide sufficient diameter for the dual flow paths while also providing the seal area to isolate the upper zone's pressure at the packer. Additional seal bore extensions can be added to both the lower packer and latching-type par-allel flow tube if required by anticipated tubing movement.

ONE TRIP DUAL COMPLETIONDual zone completions that are subject to crossflow or prohibited from commingled production can be de-signed for one-trip installation. Hydraulic set packers permit flanged up setting. Seating nipples positioned below each packer provide for the temporary plugging required for setting of the packer or as required through the life of the well. A sliding sleeve, positioned on the long string above the lower packer, provides for circulation or spotting of fluids for upper zone treat-ment or the option of producing the upper zone through the long string. Slimline Subsurface Safety Valves can be installed on both strings above the dual packer to provide the automatic shut-in of the well in the event of damage to the tree or tubing strings above the packer, as required in offshore comple-tions. This system provides for single trip retrievability of the entire completion system.

ONE TRIP SELECTIVE DUAL COMPLETIONMultizone completions can be addressed with both flexibility and long term economics incorporated into the design. The use of both dual and single string hy-draulic set retrievable packers provides for setting of all the packers following installation of the tree. Multi-ple payzones can be perforated in the initial comple-tion procedures, and then isolated as desired without requiring future rig intervention. Sliding sleeves can be positioned to selectively produce from either tub-ing string between the dual packers. A Telescoping Swivel Sub is positioned below the upper dual packer on the short string to accommodate the run-in and make up procedures. Seating nipples are positioned below the lower dual packer, as well as lower single string packer, which provide for temporary plugging required during the packer setting procedures. This type of completion configuration offers long term flex-ibility for changing well conditions while providing a completely retrievable completion system.
