Regarding this book he has given views of different authorities also under the head- ing of 'Awaz -e-k he lq". He has claimed that, thousands of most effective single and com- pound recipes have been included in this book which mainly deals with Kayachikitsa. Method of purification of various minerals and poisonous drugs, Ashtasanskaras of mercury, preparation of Rasas;ndura, Rasakarpura, incineration of various metals and marine products, description of different yantras and put as etc . have also been given in this book. ABSTRACT

This book namely Mukhzan-e-Ayurved meaning (Ghar ka vaidya or Hakeem) was

compiled in five volumes in Urdu language by Shri Krishna Dayal Vaidya of Amritsar

during 1926 to 1930 to bring out Ayurveda in Urdu language for the Urdu knowing

people.

The author is of the opinion that Ayurveda must be given its right place by the state

by opening big Ayurvedic hospitals and colleges and also half or atleast one fourth

amount of the budget of Allopathy must be spent on it.

Regarding this book he has given views of different authorities also under the head-ing of 'Awaz -e-k he lq". He has claimed that, thousands of most effective single and com-

pound recipes have been included in this book which mainly deals with Kayachikitsa.

On the basis of the informationavailable in this, regarding the biogra-

phical details of the author, it can besaid that he was a famous Ayurvedicphysician of Amritsar. and was theeditor of an Ayurvedic Journal "GharKa Vaidva" and proprietor of an Avur-vedic pharmacy "Hindustani DavaGhar" at Arnritsar.

In the introduction of this book,the author has given the definition of

Ayurveda and explained its import-ance and eternity etc. Then. opinionsregarding Ayurveda, of differenteminent personalities such as Prof.J. F. Royal, Senior Professor, MateriaMedica, Therapeutics College. Lon-don; Prof. Haris Wilson, OxfordUniversity. Ex. Governers of Bombayand Madras and others have beengiven. Further, he says Ayurveda isoriginally in Sanskrit language and inancient India, the only medical systemprevalent through out the countrywas Ayurveda. But, later on due tosuccessive Governments, propogationof Ayurveda and Sanskrit languagecame to stand still and new systemsof medicine like Unani and Allopathyflourished along with the new culture.Britishers patronised the Allopathicsystem of medicine. Even thenAyurveda is alive due to its potentia-lities. Regarding the spreading ofmore and more diseases, he is of theopinion that, it is because of Allopa-thic medicines. which are unsuitableto the Prakriti (nature) of Indianpeople. To counter these newdreadful diseases, he says Ayurvedamust be given its right place by theState, by opening big Ayurvedichospitals and colleges and accordingto him half or at least one fourthamount of the budget of Allopathymust be spent on the indigenoussystems of medicine.

The author has also given reasonsfor compiling this book. He saysthat since all the original books ofAyurveda are available only inSanskrit, the general public is unableto derive the benefits from thesebooks. Hence, he has compiled thisbook in Urdu language for thestudents of Urdu and in this waywanted to popularise Ayurveda amonglakhs of people not knowing Sanskritbut he did not do this for any personalgain. He claimed that he hadincluded thousands of most effective

single and compound recipes in thisbook, based on his twenty five yearsof practical experience; apart fromthese, the recipes collected from Avur-vedic classics, were also added tomake this book very useful. Thisbook is based on Caraka Samhita.Vagbhata, Harita, Sarngadhara,Bhavaprakasa, Vanqasena, Madha-vanidana. Bhaisajvaratnavalt, Cakra-datta, Niqhanturatnakara, Rasaratna-kara, Avurvedasanqraha, Rasamanjari,Hasendr asarasanqtaha. Hasarajasu n-dara, Rasaratnasamuccaya, Rasavana-sara. Yoqacintarnani, Vaidyajeevanaarid Chikitsacandrodaya etc.

This book mainly deals withthe Kayacikitsa (general medicine)branch of Ayurveda. There are 99chapters in the book covering causes,diagnosis and treatment of variousdiseases in detail. Useful instruc-tions to physicians and patients, manysingle and compound diuqs for thetreatment of the diseases, methodsof purification of various minerals andpoisonous drugs, Ast asarnskaras of

mercury, preparation of Rasasinduraand Hasakarpura. incineration of anumber of minerals and marine pro-ducts, description of different yantrasand putas etc .Iorrn the subject mate-rial of the book. Out of the fivevolumes only at the end of threevolumes of the second edition theauthor's name with date is found asbelow:
