The Last Moment and the Infant Imam (AS) came to the camp and they brought near him his son (Abd Allah), and he placed him in his bosom. At this stage a man from Banu Asad shot an arrow towards the infant which resulted in his martyrdom, thus Imam (AS) took the infant’s blood in his hand. And when it got full, he spilled the blood upon the ground and said: “Oh Allah! if it has been destined that we should be deprived of rain water from the sky, consider this innocent blood as a means for being blessed with Your blessings, and take our revenge from this group of tyrants.” Then he placed the child beside other martyrs. In another tradition it has been mentioned that: “Imam (AS) came in front of the camp and said to Zaynab (SA): ‘Bring the infant near me so that I could say farewell to him.’ Then he took him and brought near his face in order to kiss him, at this instant Hurmula b. Kahil Asadi shot an arrow, which pierced through the infant’s throat instantaneously making him sacrificed.”, and how beautifully a poet in the following Arabic verse has portrayed this theme: “The heart, torn apart from patience—was from Allah,

It would have exploded even it was hard like stone.

He lowered his head down, to kiss his beloved child,

But, instead—the arrow kissed it before his father.”

Thus, Imam (AS) said to Zaynab (SA): “Take the child,” then he placed his hand under the child’s throat, and since it got filled with child’s blood, threw it towards the heaven and said: “Since Allah witnesses the tragedy befallen upon me, It becomes easier for me—to bear and tolerate

it.” Hisham b. Muhammad al-Kalbi has narrated that: “Since, Imam (AS) saw that Kufan army is determined upon spilling his blood, he took Quran, opened it, placed it upon his head and said: ‘Oh Kufans! There are Holy Qur’an and my grandfather—Muhammad, the messenger of Allah—between you and me. Then how can you justify spilling of my blood as lawful?’ At this moment Imam (AS) looked around and saw an infant who was crying because of thirst, he took him in his hand and said that: ‘Oh Kufans! if you are not kind towards me, then be kind towards this sucking infant.’ But in responding to Imam’s (AS) genuine human request, a man from the Kufan army killed the infant by an arrow.
