As Christians we can influence society in distinctively Christian approach to the people we come across as we go about our daily lives. This is what is to be ‘salt and light’ in the world (Matt 5:13-14) whereby living distinctively Christian lifestyles we seek to influence those around us, and through this the values, decisions and priorities adopted by our communities. Sometime it may be hard to realize but God gives us numerous opportunities to influence people. We should find where there is chance for dialogue, where community decisions are taken, where it is possible to spend time with people who can influence our community. Jesus challenges us to be salt and light-to influence the world, and to be seen to be doing so. "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Mt 5:13-16 Jesus here emphasizes to the disciples that they have both the calling and the responsibility to be influencers in the world. Jesus’ teaching here is challenging. There is little or no room for those who are Christians, but have lost their saltiness, or their ‘edge’. Without the testimony of lives lived out with integrity and consistency with the principles that Christians clam to follow, the testimony of our lips is useless. In the next verse it says, “let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Light shines on dark things and exposes what is there. This is a clarion call to the church to challenge evil in within our society, however uncomfortable this may be. The light we bring in is not our own light-it is rather the light of God shinning through our lives as the Holy Spirit works through them. When God gives us the opportunity we have to share it with them. We hide our light when we stay silent in the face of discussion which is contrary to that which we believe. We hide our light when we fail to accept and conform to behavior that is not in line with Jesus’ teaching. When we don’t care for the needs of others. If we let the light of the Holy Spirit at work in us shine through, then we bring glory to God, and there can be no greater joy than being able to give glory to the Father as we go through our daily lives. As we celebrate this Christmas season, let us spend time in prayer asking God to show us opportunities where we can be salt and light as we live out our lives. As Christians we can influence society in distinctively Christianapproach to the people we come across as we go about ourdaily lives. This is what is to be ‘salt and light’ in the world(Matt 5:13-14) whereby living distinctively Christian lifestyleswe seek to influence those around us, and through this thevalues, decisions and priorities adopted by our communities.

Sometime it may be hard to realize but God gives us numerousopportunities to influence people. We should find where thereis chance for dialogue, where community decisions are taken, where it is possible to spend time with people who caninfluence our community. Jesus challenges us to be salt andlight-to influence the world, and to be seen to be doing so.

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it bemade salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out andtrampled by men. “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot behidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they putit on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, letyour light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise yourFather in heaven." Mt 5:13-16

Jesus here emphasizes to the disciples that they have both the calling and theresponsibility to be influencers in the world. Jesus’ teaching here is challenging. There is little or no room for those who are Christians, but have lost their saltiness,or their ‘edge’. Without the testimony of lives lived out with integrity and consistencywith the principles that Christians clam to follow, the testimony of our lips is useless. In the next verse it says, “let your light shine before men, so that they may see yourgood deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

Light shines on dark things and exposes what is there. This is a clarion call to thechurch to challenge evil in within our society, however uncomfortable this may be.The light we bring in is not our own light-it is rather the light of God shinning throughour lives as the Holy Spirit works through them. When God gives us the opportunitywe have to share it with them.

We hide our light when we stay silent in the face of discussion which is contrary tothat which we believe. We hide our light when we fail to accept and conform tobehavior that is not in line with Jesus’ teaching. When we don’t care for the needsof others. If we let the light of the Holy Spirit at work in us shine through, then webring glory to God, and there can be no greater joy than being able to give glory tothe Father as we go through our daily lives.

As we celebrate this Christmas season, let us spend time in prayer asking God toshow us opportunities where we can be salt and light as we live out our lives.

Christmas TriviaA list of interesting Christmas trivia thatwere not large enough to have a separatepage devoted to each of them.Santa Claus has many different namesaround the world including FatherChristmas in the UK, Pere Noel in France,Kriss Kringle in Germany, La Befana in Italy,Julinesse in Denmark, Dedushka Moroz(meaning Grandfather Frost) in Russia andthe Three Kings in Spain and Mexico. The typical image we have of Santa Clausdressed in red clothes with white fur trim,is an amalgamation of cultural input overmany years. Some people claim the imageof Santa we know today is from Coca-colaadvertising, but this simply isn’t true. Thestandard Santa garb was well establishedby the 1920s and it wasn’t until the 1930sthat Coca-cola first used the Santa Clausdesign in their advertising.

whatever is pure, whatever islovely, whatever is admirable-ifanything is excellent orpraiseworthy-think about suchthings.”4

“Those who are wise will shinelike the brightness of theheavens, and those who leadmany to righteousness, like thestars for ever and ever.”5 “You arethe light of the world. A city ona hill cannot be hidden.”6

Christians are set up as lights.Christ has lighted these candles, they shall not be put under abushel, not confined always, asthey are now, to the cities ofGalilee, or the lost sheep of thehouse of Israel, but they shall besent into all the world. Thechurches are the candlesticks, the golden candlesticks, in whichthese lights are placed, that theirlight may be diffused; and thegospel is so strong a light, andcarries with it so much of its ownevidence, that, like a city on a hill,it cannot be hid, it cannot butappear to be from God, to allthose who do not willfully shuttheir eyes against it. “For youwere once darkness, but now youare light in the Lord. Live aschildren of light (for the fruit ofthe light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth).”7 It willgive light to all that are in thehouse, to all that will draw nearto it, and come where it is. Thoseto whom it does not give light arethose who will not make adiligent and impartial inquiry intoit, but are prejudiced against it.

TTTTTrrrrransansansansansffffforming Lighorming Lighorming Lighorming Lighorming Lighttttt

Christians must shine as lights bytheir dynamic witness. Theknowledge they have, they mustcommunicate for the good ofothers; not put it under a bushel, but spread it. The talent mustnot be buried in a napkin, butinstead it should be used. Thedisciples of Christ must not retireinto privacy and obscurity, underpretence of contemplation, modesty, or self-preservation, asin the Himalayas, but need to liveamong the “crooked generation.”John the Baptist was a shininglight, an eminent diffusiveinfluence. He was illustrious inthe sight of others; though hewas in the desert, his life becamevery remarkable, and attractedthe eyes of the nation. Shine likestars in the universe as you holdout the word of life.8

ChallengChallengChallengChallengChallengeeeeeThere is a great need forChristians to be burning light, shining light, and transforminglight. The world in darkness isyearning for light, which onlyChristians can offer. Young Johnthe Baptist is a great model foryouth today.I was hurting myselfAnd hurting someone like me(Footnotes)1 John 5:35.2 John 8:12.3 Matthew 5:14.4 Philippians 4:8.5 Daniel 12:36 Matthew 5:14.7 Ephesians 5:88 Philippians 2:15-16

“John was alamp thatburned and gavelight.”1 Inanother versionit says that Johnwas a burningand shining light.

The testimony about John theBaptist by Jesus Christ indicatesthe function of a believer or achurch in the world. There aretwo verbs used: “burning” and“shining”. Burning denotes theinternal status of a believer orthe in-house status of a localchurch. Shining denotes theexternal effect of a believer orthe far-reaching effect of themission of a local church.John the Baptist was a light, notphos-lux, light (so Christ was thelight), but lyknos-lucerna, aluminary, a derived subordinatelight. His work was to enlightena dark world with a voice in thewilderness preparing the way forthe coming Messiah. He was asthe Morning Star. Christians arenot originators of light like thesun, but reflectors of light like themoon. Jesus Christ is the sourceof light so He is known as the“Light of the World.”2 “You arethe light of the world. A city ona hill cannot be hidden.”3 Eachand every believer is called to bea “light of the world” like Johnthe Baptist.

work. The people became afraidand gave up on the task God hadgiven them to do. With God’shelp and the encouragement ofHaggai, however, the task wenton, and the rebuilding of God’sTemple was completed. Godwants us to grow spiritually, andHe will help us to overcome theobstacles if we look to Him forhelp.

It is much easier to recognize aproblem than it is to dosomething about it. God’s peoplein Jerusalem knew the Templeneeded to be rebuilt if theirnation was to get back in linewith God’s will. They had set outto complete the task but hd then

become discouraged and failedto follow through. Their failure toact over a period of yearsbrought continued sufferingupon them. Haggai called thepeople to act; he calls us to dothe same. When seeking spiritualrenewal, we must go beyond therecognition of our need. Wemust use the keys God gives usto move toward reconciliationwith God, ourselves, and others. As painful as this process can beat times, we will be movingtoward restoration.

Past few weeks we have beenmeditating in the church here onthe book of Haggai in the OldTestament history. The ProohetHaggai was called to encouragethe people of Jerusalem t returnto the task of rebuilding God’shouse. The task of rebuilding theTemple was difficult; so is thetask of rebuilding our lives. Therewill always be obstacles, but wedon’t have to let them stop us.When we feel like quitting, wecan remember the message ofHaggai. God is there to help andprotect us each step of the way.As God’s people had t reassesstheir spiritual livesin therebuilding process, we need toexamine our lives and act toprove our inner changes. We, likethe people of Jerusalem, canrespond to Haggai’s message andmove forward in the rebuildingand restoration process.

When we face obstacles to God’splan for us, it is easy to getsidetracked from our primarymission; it is tempting to followthe way of least resistance. Thepeople of Jerusalem startedrebuilding God’s Temple but thenmet with stiff opposition. Instead

of trusting God and standing upto the opposition, the peopleturned away from the rebuildingproject God had for them andbuilt their own homes instead. We tend to make the samemistake. When we face anobstacle to our spiritual growth,we may turn away and take theway of least resistance. We maylower our standards, give in tosin, avoid confession, stopseeking God, and neglectrelationships with those whohold us accountable. We mayeven look for a spiritual path thatlooks easier because it excludesGod. But when we reject God’splan, we also reject His powerand blessings in our lives. We cannot experience spiritual renewaland fulfillment apart fromfollowing God’s Will, even thoughthat may not always be easy.

Page 17: Muhan
