The Mansfield University Brass Band (Dr. Nathan Rinnert, musical director) completed a tremendously
successful trip to the North American Brass Band Championships in Fort Wayne, IN in March 2015. The band competed in the 3rd section of the contest and came home with the 2nd-place trophy, missing the championship by the narrowest of margins (3-tenths of a point out of a possible 300!). The test-piece (performed by all competing bands) for the 3rd section was Peter Graham’s Dancing in the Park. The band also performed William Rimmer’s The Cossack and Malcolm Arnold’s Little Suite for Brass as their “own choice” pieces. Dylan Krall (tenor horn) and Marissa Pattison (euphonium) each participated, with great reviews and scores, in the solo portion
of the contest. The band was equally well-represented in the small ensemble portion of the contest by a
brass quintet, a tuba-euphonium quartet, and a percussion trio.
In preparation for the contest, the band presented a concert at Avon Lake High School, just west of Cleveland, OH. Former trumpet professor, Dr. Michael Galloway (now residing in the Cleveland area) was instrumental in setting up this concert. He, and his wife, Kay, were also generous enough to host the 30-piece band in their home for a reception following the concert.
We love to hear from our AlumniPlease take a few minutes to keep us current with any change of name, address, and your recent happenings.

The Mountie Sound Machine is being re-invented for the 2015-16 Men’s & Women’s home basketball games. The new band will consist primarily of saxophones (quartets of soprano, alto, tenor, & bari) from Joe Murphy’s studio, drum-set, and voices. The goal is to decrease the number of students in the core ensemble (to minimize conflicts between game schedules and academic/ensemble commitments) and to increase the audience participation in form of sing-a-long vocals (more Wooly Bully & Hey, Baby!). The music department and saxophone studio is excited about the possibilities of creating something truly unique and exciting!
Alumni of the basketball pep band are encouraged to
attend a Mountie Sound Machine Reunion at the men’s & women’s games against Kutztown on Saturday, February 20, 2015. The full alumni band will rehearse in Butler Music Center at 10:00am. The women’s game is scheduled for a 1:00pm tip-off, followed by the men’s game at 3:00pm. Lunch and event t-shirts will be available. Don’t miss this opportunity to see some old friends, support MU Athletics, and welcome Kutztown men’s basketball coach Bernie Driscoll back to his favorite PSAC gymnasium! (see http://www.mcall.com/sports/college/mc-division-ii-college-basketball-toughest-road-gyms-0227-20150226-story.html for the story).
More information on this event will be available mid-
fall 2015. Check (and “Like”!) the “Mansfield University Music Department” Facebook site for updates.
Mansfield Music Alumni Alive and Well!
Terry Ochs ‘76Keeping in touch with friends and colleagues after
college is always a challenge; that roommate or best
friend down the hall now lives across the country, the
fellowship with fraternity/sorority brothers and sisters
fades as the years after graduation accumulate, those
wonderful performances, trips, and tours become
distant, yet remain fond memories, and friends taken
away from us all too soon. These are the thoughts we
hold dear as we remember the best years of our life at
Mansfield University, and reuniting with our friends
brings a smile to everyone and allows us all to connect
with our past and reconnect with the current version
of our college friends.
In Eastern Pennsylvania distance and a full
calendar keep many of us from visiting Mansfield for
alumni events, so in 2000 several of us got together to
share lunch, a beer or two, and entertain each other
with the memories of our days at Mansfield. It was so
much fun that we continued scheduling reunions and
simplified the process by creating events in Facebook
and inviting every music alumni we could find to join
us, gradually growing the number of invitations as
more alumni became
aware of what we were
doing.
Since we started
meeting we have been
joined by a wide variety of alumni coming from
Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Allentown, Scranton,
Binghamton, NY, and other locations too numerous
to mention. We have met in Downingtown,
Hershey, Harrisburg, Quakertown, Adamstown
and Allentown to offer some variety of location and
accommodate those traveling greater distances.
On Saturday, May 16, 2015 our latest and largest
group of alumni gathered at Fegely’s Brew Works
in Allentown, PA and a great time was had by all.
We even had the pleasure of being joined by one of
the current music staff joining us for the first time;
Christine Fish Moulton, Associate Professor of Flute
at Mansfield University for the past eleven years, was
able to stop by and meet everyone.
We generally schedule an event in the spring
before Memorial Day weekend and another in the
fall before Thanksgiving. We are looking to involve
as many people as possible, so anyone interested in
joining in on the fun can contact me either through
Facebook or email at [email protected] and
I’ll see you are added to the invitation list for the
next event. Tentatively, the next event will occur on
either November 14 or 21, 2015 and a location has
yet to be determined. Mansfield University music
alumni in Eastern Pennsylvania are alive and well and
look forward to seeing more friends at our next event.

Dr. Peggy Dettwiler gave a two-day choral workshop as a part of Carnegie Hall’s Music Education series. On Friday, she presented sessions to New York City school choral directors for the Department of Education and on Saturday, she presented a clinic with the Wadleigh Secondary School Choir from Harlem under the direction of Kimberly Walton for the attendees of the Carnegie Hall Weill Music Institute. In May, Peggy returned to NYC to work with the Harlem choir once more as well as another choir from Francis Lewis High School in Queens, NY, under the direction of Ejona Gmermeni.
In July, Peggy revived the high school choral camp, which included this year students also interested in strings and piano study. Jeff Jacobsen and Todd Ranney joined in leading the week’s activities for 20 students from Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio. Students seemed happy and hopeful that the camp will take place again next year!
