M.Tech Rules & Regulations 1.0 Duration for the Programme Postgraduate programmes leading to M.Tech. degree will extend over a period of 4 semesters each semester will normally have a duration of 75 net working days. 2.0 Eligibility For Admissions 2.1) Candidate for admission to the M. Tech. degree programmes should have passed the final examination of the 4year (or 8semester) B. E. or B.Tech. degree programme of an appropriate branch of study (vide Appendix I) or an examination accepted by SASTRA as equivalent thereto. 2.2) SASTRA will prescribe, from to time, other eligibility conditions regarding: the minimum marks secured in the qualifying examinations, permitted number of attempts for obtaining the degree, qualifying performance in entrance tests, physical fitness, etc. 2.3) The sponsored candidates should satisfy the conditions regarding sponsorship that may be prescribed by SASTRA from time to time. 3.0 Program Structure & the Credit System 3.1) Each M.Tech. Programme will have a curriculum, with syllabi consisting of a) Core courses, which give a broad base in the main field of study in the academic program concerned b) Elective courses chosen by the student in consultation with the faculty adviser c) Project work where special emphasis is laid on the application of knowledge to reallife problems. d) The program will also include seminars and practical training, as prescribed by the Board of Studies in the curriculum & syllabi and approved by The Academic Council. 3.2) Each course is coordinated by a Course Coordinator who has the full responsibility for conducting the course. 3.3) Each course has a certain number of credits assigned to it, depending upon its lecture, tutorial & laboratory contact periods in a week. 3.4) There are mainly two types of courses that a student has undergo lecture courses & practical courses. The practical courses shall include laboratories, workshops and graphic classes. Every course has been assigned a certain number of credits, according to the following pattern: a) 1 credit for each lecture period/week b) 0 credit for each tutorial period/week c) 1 credit for each practical session of 3 periods / week & d) 1 credit for seminar session of 3 periods / week. 3.5) A letter grade, corresponding to the marks secured by the student, is awarded for each course for

  • whichastudenthasregistered.Onobtainingapassgrade,thestudentaccumulatesthecoursecreditsasearnedcredits.Astudent'sprogressismeasuredbythenumberofcreditsthatthestudenthasearnedandthegradepointaverage.4.0CompletionofM.TechProgrammes4.1)Astudentearnscreditsbypassingcoursesineverysemester.Astudent,whohasregisteredforM.Tech.degreeprogramme,hastoacquire63creditstobeeligiblefortheawardofthedegree.4.2)Thecourseswillbeofferedinsemesterpattern.Foreachcoursethatthestudentundergoesduringasemester,therewillbeaContinuousAssessment(CA)foramaximumof50%marks.Thiswillbebasedonthestudent'sperformanceinthemonthlytests,seminars,quizzes,assignments,etc.Therewillbeoneexaminationof3hoursdurationattheendofthesemesterforeachcreditedlecturecourse.Endsemesterexaminationsofpracticalcourseswillbeof3periodsduration,andmaybeconductedwithinoneweekfromthelastworkingdayofthatsemester.4.3)Thecommencement&durationoftheProjectWorkwillbeaspertheapprovedcurriculumfortheprogramme.4.4)Project/Dissertation:Eachstudentisrequiredtotakeupadissertation(orproject).Theprojectwork(orthetopicfordissertation),chosenbythestudentandtheguide,shouldbeapprovedthetopicfordissertation),chosenbythestudentandtheguide,shouldbeapprovedbytheHeadoftheDepartment/Divisionbytheendofthesecondsemester.TwotypedcopiesoftheProjectReport/DissertationshallbesubmittedtoSASTRAthroughtheHeadoftheDepartment/DivisiononorbeforethedatefixedbySASTRA.IncaseastudentsubmitstheProjectReportIDissertationaftertheduedatebutbeforetheendof3yearsfromthedatehisadmission,hisvivavoceexaminationwillbeconductedalongwiththesubsequentbatchofstudents.4.5)AstudentshouldcompletetheM.Tech.programmewithinaperiodof4years(i.e.8semesters)fromthedateofadmission.5.0AcademicScheduleofM.TechDegreeProgrammes5.1)Normally,theoddsemesterclasseswillbeconductedfromAugusttoDecemberofayear.TheregularandsupplementaryexaminationsforoddsemestercourseswillbeconductedduringDecember.Similarly,theevensemesterclasseswillbeconductedduringJanuaryMayofayear.TheregularsupplementaryexaminationsfortheevensemestercourseswillbeconductedduringMayJune.

    6.0RequirementsforSuccessfulCompletionofCourse&EarningCredits6.1)Studentsmustattendeverylecture,tutorialandpracticalclass.However,inordertoprovideforillnessandsuchothercontingencies,aminimumattendancepercentagehasbeenprescribedforeachcourse.Percentageofattendanceofastudentinacoursewillbethenumberofclassesattendedinthatcoursedividedbythenumberofclassesactuallyconductfromthedateofhisadmissionandmultipliedby100.Astudentcanappearinanendsemesterexaminationforaparticularcourseonlywhenhe/shehasputinaminimumattendanceof75%inthatcourse.Astudentshouldnecessarilyregisterfortheendsemesterexaminationsinalltheregularandarrearcourses.6.2)Astudentwhohasnotsatisfiedtheminimumattendancerequirementof75%willnotbeallowedto

  • appearfortheendsemesterexamination.Thestudentwillhavetorepeatthecoursewhenitisofferednext.6.3)Astudentshouldappearfortheendsemesterexaminationsinalltheregularcourses(pertainingtothatsemester)inwhichhe/shehassatisfiedtheattendancerequirements.6.4)Outoftotalof100marksallottedforeachcourse,50marksareallottedforcontinuousassessment,and50marksfortheendsemesterexamination.6.5)Acandidateshouldsecureatleast40%(i.e.,20marks)inthecontinuousassessmentforthecourse;ifnot,thestudentwillhavetorepeatthecoursewhenitisofferednext.Thebreakupofthemarksforcontinuousassessmentforacourseisasgivenbelow:

    7.0EvaluationofAcademicPerformance&Promotion7.1)Coursewisegradesareawardedtothestudentsbyadoptingthefollowingscheme,basedontheaggregatemarksscoredbythestudentinthecourse(whichincludesinternalassessmentmarksandendsemesterexaminationmarks).

    7.2)Ifastudentgets40%marksormoreincontinuousassessment,butscoreslessthan50%aggregatemarksandawardedwith"F"grade,he/shemayappearforsupplementaryexaminationattheendofthefollowingsemester.7.3)Ifastudentscoreslessthan40%marksincontinuousassessment,orifastudenthasattendancedeficiency,he/shewillbeawardedan"Incomplete"grade(I,pointvalue=0).Thestudentwillhavetorepeatthecourse,whenitisofferednext.7.4)CumulativeGradePointAverage(CGPA)iscalculatedasfollows:Let'C1'bethecreditassignedtotheithcourseLet'P1'bethegradepointsecuredintheithcourseLet'n'bethenumberofcoursesforwhichthestudenthasregisteredfortheexaminationsCGPA=(C1P1+C2P2+....+C1P1+....+CnPn)/(C1+C2+....+C1+....+Cn)

    7.5)Astudentwillbepermittedtoregisterforthenexthighersemestercourses,butcanappearfortheProjectVivaVoceexaminationonlyifhe/shesecuredaminimumCGPAof5.0andhasnotgot"I"gradeinanycourseatthatpointoftime.IftheCGPAislessthanthe5.0,thestudentwillhavetocleartheacademicdeficiency(improvetheCGPAtoaminimumof5.0)beforeappearingfortheProjectViva

  • voceexamination.Ifastudentgotany"I"gradehe/sheshouldredothecoursewhenitisofferednext.Ifthatcourseinnotoffered,heshoulddoadulyapprovedalternativecourse,beforeappearingfortheProjectVivavoceexamination.However,heshouldsubmittheprojectreportattheendoftheprojectsemesteritself.
