►Water network rehabilitation This service package comprises all necessary measures to render an existing water supply system more efficient in technical and economical terms. It can be divided in three distinctive sections:

→ Mapping

Detailed maps giving extensive information about the structure of reticular pipe systems is the basis for managing a water supply utility. In case of missing or incomplete maps MTA is offering to update the maps and to complete or install an adequate database. For this purpose a software particularly developed for under-ground water distribution systems, with GPS connection, is applied. Data transfer to any GI System can be provided.

→ Water loss reduction

There is no water supply system without losses. To reduce water losses and to keep them permanently on a low level is one of MTA´s special skills. The total array of existing technologies is applied according to the necessity of a given situation that is e.g.

• Evaluation of minimum night flow. • Water loss analyses (zone metering) • Correlation • Acoustical zone surveillance using noise

• logger and radio analysis • Geophone leakage detection • H2 Gas check method

► Hydraulic modelling All functions and patterns of operation characteristics in a reticular water supply system can be simulated in order to see and evaluate what happens under certain assumptions.

It is a valuable instrument for the technical management of a water utility to base decisions on solid ground (e.g. network extension, fire incident, pump operation etc.) MTA provides the data collection, the calibration and case studies.

► Pipe cleaning and disinfection

Drinking water is regarded as one of the basic means of living. Therefore in most countries it is subject to the same stringent laws and regulations as other food for human use when it comes to hygienic standards. Pipes and reservoirs for water transport, stocking as well as the capture must be absolutely free of biological and chemical residues and organic or inorganic opacities.

►Well generation and well rehabilitation by MTA AIR – Jetting The performance of wells tapping underground water decreases with time, due to incrustation, sedimentation and general earth settings. This means less water output and higher energy input. To restore the initial capacity wells need appropriate care, maintenance and intervention. To reach this object MTA uses a high frequency impulse procedure. An impulse generator connected to a high pressure hose is inserted in the well. Via a set of valves the compressed air is emitted in very short intervals (milliseconds), thus creating intermitted water-air waves of high velocity. The waves enter the slots of the well walls cleaning them and penetrate the surrounding filter area. The alternating effect of pressure and under pressure loosens the filter area creating at the same time a sucking effect that transports the micro-particles into the well. At the end of the process the accumu-lated residues are removed with an appropriate pump. The process is subdivided in different stages:

• Preliminary TV camera inspection to ascertain the condition of the well and to choose the appropriate procedure.

• Insertion of the impulse generator and start of the actual cleaning process

• Removing the deposits created by the cleaning process • Recovery phase to give the micro particels time to settle down • Final TV camera inspection to document the result of the

cleaning process

The method can be applied to all types of wells, uses no chemicals and is safe regarding the environment.

►Air-Water-Flush System MTA has developed and successfully ap-plied a new system to clean pipes of resi-dues and disturbing impurities. By creating a high speed turbulent mixture of water and sterilised air by the mobile equipment the loose residues and some of the incrustations are removed from the pipes inside. The advantages of this system are considerable:

• No excavations as the system operates via

existing hydrants and outlets • Minimum traffic disturbances • No mechanical disruptive intervention causing leaks • Works within normal operation pressure

► Disinfection As a service driven enterprise MTA is frequently approached to disinfect parts or whole installations of potable water supply systems. In such cases MTA uses specific products for industry and public water supply systems which are up to the requirements of this sensitive area – that is water for human use. This means disinfectant are highly effective, none aggressive to the installations and environmentally compatible.

► LPMH system for the measurement of slopes in pipes and monitoring of underground movement Originally developed to measure the decline of sewer pipes, this system has delivered results of high accuracy. This lead to extend and introduce the system in other areas. Present day it is applied in fields where such high accuracy is requested or where data about underground movement is needed (dams, roads, embankments, landfills ecc.) A high sensitive sensor connected with a container of special liquid forms a closed system. Any change in the position of the sensor provokes a change in atmospheric pressure. By a software program this changement is automatically computed and converted in alpha-numeric and graphic version. Any change of temperature is compensated automatically by the software. Each sensor is cali-brated individually. The measurements can be repeated point by point and mirror a precise picture of the underground movement or the slope of a pipe.

► KRK - system for quality control of flushing procedures in sewerage pipes From time to time sewage systems need to be cleaned to maintain their full function. For this process water under high pressure is flushed by jets into the pipes to be cleaned. Improper pressure or the selection of wrong jets might cause damages on the pipes and reduce the result of the cleaning intervention. According to a German study 30% of the damages on sewerage pipes are caused by wrong flushing. To avoid such damages and to guarantee good flushing results MTA has developed KRK. By KRK the entire flushing process is parameterized. Across the input screen the crucial dates are entered. Like material of the pipe, diameter and type of the jet. The system automatically selects the right pressure for the flushing process. At the same time the posi-tion of the flushing van and the time of the whole process is registered by GPS. All data is stored and printed in a report. The data can be transferred together with other relevant information to a data base and constitute with other parameters an integrated information system for the operation of the sewage system (maintenance plan).

►Training, development and solution centre EPC (European Pipeline Center) The EPC is an unique organisation of expert enterprises and universities concentrated on underground pipe systems. It was founded in 2006 and is managed by MTA. Its objective is to train technicians, to develop new products and systems and to offer comprehensive solutions. It disposes of an infrastructure consisting of underground pipes of three thousand meters, of various diameters, materials and in-build defects which is used to simulate real case situations and find the best solution for their remedy.

→Training of technical personnel of water supply entities according to the Austrian and German standard It is a fundamental fact that only well trained people are in the position to run a water supply system smoothly and to the satisfaction of the consumers. To inform water work personnel on all level about the state of art and new technology developments is one of the foremost endeavours of EPC. EPC offers courses information meetings and seminaries in accordance and in cooperation with the official Austrian authorities. In the last three years approx. two thousand people of various countries have passed different training units of the EPC.

→Meeting and exchange point for comprehensive solution in under-ground pipe systems

The combined expert pool of the EPC members uses their potential to create synergies for innovative solutions (products and services) with benefit for the client. EPC claims that there is no problem which can not be solved to the client’s best satisfaction if it is brought forward. MTA who manages the EPC is able to constitute the right group of experts for each and very request.

► WCS® - Water Control Systems WCS is an universally applicable information- control-and regulation system for the management of water supply entities that makes use of existing information channels i.e. Internet and mobile phone systems. Therefore it is economical, everywhere available and of high operational security. WCS covers, collects and evaluate all data necessary for the operation of a water supply system that is:

• quantity • pressure • level • quality • access

and gives the operator the possibility to switch into on-line modus via mobile phone or computer if required.

By registering and comparing pressure and flow developments and indicating abnormalities it is used to pre-locate new leaks and thereby keeping water losses on a permanent low level.

It is used on

• District meters in pipe lines • Pressure registrators on pipe lines • Level indicators in reservoirs and ground water measuring stations • Chemical and biological surveillance points • Admittance control etc. WCS is independent in regard to any electricity system and oper-ates with self sufficient, long-lasting (up to 5 years) batteries.

►HYP - system for hydrant control and calibration including emergency plan for fire brigade

The well function of fire hydrants in case of a fire emergency is of paramount importance to save lives and reduce property damage.

Therefore in Austria and Germany mandatory rules are in force that obligates a periodic test to establish the status of any hydrant.

MTA has developed a system for this purpose to measure and verify the true shape and capacity of a hydrant. The collected data can not be manipulated and are automatically registered in connection with GPS time and position.

This makes it possible to transfer automatically all data to the entities involved in case of a fire incident (fire fighting department, police etc.)

The data can be connected with Google earth or any GIS (geographic information system) to elaborate an emergency plan which ensures a speedy and accurately targeted intervention.

Extended by pressure loggers positioned on other hydrants and simultaneous, automatic recording of the pressure comportment during the process of hydrant control allows a first evaluation of the hydraulic stability and might serve as data for a hydraulic model.

►MPV - multi purpose van for water network management including

This unique piece of engineering equipment is an entirely new construction and contains the combined experience of MTA in building mobile vans for various purposes. The sophisticated layout enables different types of interventions in a pipe network with one mobile outfit by operating with the appropriate module according to the problem at hand.

The customer can choose his preferred type of van. The minimum requirement is a load area of: l 300 cm; w 150 cm, h 150 cm and a load capacity of 0, 8 ton.

→The leak detection module Comprises an IDM flow meter, a pressure meter and operational fittings to switch into the differ-ent phases of any leak detection process. This setting allows district metering, night flow tests and zero consumption tests to establish the quantity of water losses and together with the full range of specific leak detection instruments (correlator, geophones etc.) the pinpointing of any leakage. The operation is sustained by a computer program that collects and visualizes all relevant data.

→The pipe cleaning module Enables pipe cleaning according to the Air & Water Flush system as described further up under services. Within this part of the van the air for the cleaning process is cooled down, sterilized and brought in to an appropriate mix of air and water, depending on the diameter of the pipe to be leaned.

→The pipe disinfection module If the necessity arises to disinfect a water pipe this module of the van is activated. A water meter in combination with a pump as dosimeter creates a consistent, proportionate disinfection solution for any required disinfection process. Pipe cleaning and pipe disinfection are often used in combination to grant the best hygienic results.

→The pressure test module Is applied to check the density of pipes and pipe connections (weldings, fittings). A water tank, a pressure generating pump, operational fittings and pressure sensors are the mechanical parts. The test runs automatically via a computer programme. As different regulations and prescriptions depending on the type of pipe have to be considerated. The software program allows the automatic conduction of any test according to EC standard up to a pressure of 250 bar. This automatisation grants abso-lutely reliable results.

►Pipe- and leak - detection instruments Leak detection and pipe detection instruments are necessary tools for any water supply entity. Easy handling of the instruments and reliable results under various conditions are provided by all F.A.S.T. devices. The experience of MTA on thou-sands of miles underground pipe investigations are incorporated into the develop-ment of F.A.S.T. instruments. With joint research projects partly financed by public means, F.A.S.T instruments are the top products in their field. PIPE DETECTION → PWG/2 This system allows location of non-metal pipes running up to 2 meters below the surface.
