    POWER TAKE OFF

An independent, Power Take Off (PTO) is standard equipment on the MT600B series tractors. The PTO is driven by a live shaft from the engine. A wet, multi-disc clutch engages and disengages the PTO output shaft. A safety switch is designed into the engagement system to shut off the PTO when the engine is shut off, if the PTO is in the engaged position. Additionally, the MT600B series tractors feature a convenient PTO cut-off switch on the outside of the tractor. This enables the operator quick access to disengage the PTO from the ground. All MT600B series tractors feature dual speed, 540/1000 rpm PTO. Economy PTO is also optional on the MT600B series. A digital display of the PTO speed is provided in the dash mounted instrument panel. On the MT600B has a bolt-on access flange replaces the spring retainer clip, which provides greater strength during use under high loads.

540/1000 rpm and Economy PTO 540/1000 rpm is standard on the MT600B se-ries, and economy PTO is a factory option. This selection provides tractor PTO speeds that match tractor horsepower and perform-ance for a wide range of applications. In addi-tion, these speed selections allow the tractor to quickly adapt to numerous implements and operations for increased tractor utilization.

Independent PTO The PTO clutch can be engaged and disengaged independently of the main transmission clutch. This allows starting and stopping of PTO equipment at any time without disturbing the tractor movement, providing time savings and increased productivity.

HYDRAULICS The Challenger MT 600B Series tractors feature a Closed Center, Pressure and Flow Compensated hydraulic system with a maximum flow of 39-gpm. The axial piston pump is mounted externally on the transmission and driven through a collecting shaft. This pump supplies high pressure oil (2900-psi) for remotes, and 3-Point. A second pump mounted in tandem with the auxiliary hydraulic pump supplies oil for other functions such as steering, brakes, and to the oil cooler. A third pump supplies oil for transmission operation and lubrication. A key feature of the three pump system is that the auxiliary hydraulics and the transmission oil never mix. The sump for the transmission and the sump for the remote hydraulics are located at different areas on the tractor. This reduces the potential for contamination in the transmission. The MT600B Series tractors utilize a large, submerged cartridge hydraulic oil filtration system. This filter allows the operator to perform quick, easy maintenance of the hydraulic system. Also, the addition of system monitor lights on the cab console alert the operator when service is needed to the hydraulic system. Four electronically controlled remotes, a power beyond circuit, and a load sensing line are standard on the MT600B Series. Options are available to add additional two remote valves up to a total of six hydraulic remotes. The MT600B series also features standard float and detent locks.

Electronic Spool Valves Up to two additional electronic remotes are of-fered in a lever configuration on the right hand armrest. This enables the tractor to have a total of six electronic remote valves. The electronic remotes are spring return to neutral valves and do not incorporate internal detents, float, or manual flow adjustments. Roll-over locks are standard and allow the valves to be held open at full flow. However, the Power Performance display III monitor allows for precise flow and timed detent adjustment from inside the cab. In addition, PPD III al-lows the operator to engage a float position for the additional valves.

Roll-over Locks Each electronic lever remote is equipped with roll-over locks. When the locks are rolled to the right, the valves can be locked in a con-tinuous flow position. The valves will operate at full flow unless the PPD III monitor is used to control the flow. When the locks are rolled to the left, a float lock-out is engaged. How-ever, PPD III is required to obtain a float po-sition in the lever remotes.

Standard Powered Front Axle Increased drawbar pulling power and front wheel traction is available on the MT600B series tractors with the Standard Power Front Axle (PFA). The Power Front Axle is designed as an integral component to the tractor, not an add-on part. The front axle is also matched for the horsepower and chassis size of each tractor model. A single piece, cast-iron, center housing and heavy outboard planetary housings provide high load carrying capacities. A maximum front wheel turn angle of 55 degrees and axle oscillation of +/-11 degrees maintains positive tire to ground contact. The MT600B series Power Front Axle features center line drive. The front axle pivots at the front differential pinion shaft. There are no universal joints in the drive line from the transmis-sion to the front axle. On the left hand console, a rocker switch engages the front axle drive electro-hydraulically on the go.

Power Front Axle Tractor wheel slippage can be reduced and drawbar horsepower can be increased with the addition of the powered front axle. Studies show that drawbar pulling power can increase approximately 20% over a conventional 2WD tractor of equal horsepower. This added efficiency increases the operators output and reduces energy loss in the field.

Power Front Axle Cast Iron Housing The one-piece center housing is designed to handle shock loads and torsional twisting while operating in a wide variety of operations. The axle housing will also handle heavier loads than the two wheel drive axle during loader use. The cast iron housing provides added durability and service life to the tractor power train.

    DIFFERENTIAL, BRAKES, AND FINAL DRIVES

The MT600B series tractors feature a tested, proven design on their rear differential, brakes, and final drives. The rear differential lock can easily be engaged with the use of a rocker switch located on the right console. The differential is electro-hydraulically engaged to ensure a proper, smooth engagement. Coupled with the rear differential system is the inboard rear planetary final drives. The final drives on the MT600B series tractors operate in an oil bath to ensure proper lubrication, reduced heat, and long wear life. The MT600B series tractors have smooth progressive braking supplied by a wet, rear disc braking system. This system consists of ring pistons, brake disks, and steel backing plates. In addition, the brake discs are immersed in transmission oil to keep the discs lubricated and cool. The rear brakes are hydraulically actuated using a master cylinder at the brake pedals and a slave cylinder or ring piston within the rear axle housings. Independent, suspended pedals operate the individual turning brakes. For transport, the pedals can be latched together to provide equal braking effort to each wheel. All MT600B tractors feature four-wheel braking during transport with latched brake pedals. Brake actuation will electro-hydraulically engage the brakes in the transmission on the cardon shaft, which activates the front wheel braking effect. Challenger tractors also feature a switch-operated park brake that is independent from the pedal operated brakes.

  • FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER MT600B SERIES

    61

Automatic Four Wheel Braking When both foot pedals are llocked together during transport, four wheel braking will be engaged when the brakes are depressed. When the brakes are applied, the brakes in the transmission on the cardon shaft automatically engaged and braking power is supplied to all four wheels. This feature increases operator safety when towing heavy loads.

Differential Lock Controls The differential locks on the MT600B series tractors are controlled by convenient rocker switches located on the right console. These switches provides quick, convenient access for the operator to engage the differential locks when needed. When the differential lock is applied it locks the rear and front axle on the MT600B

Front and Rear Differential Lock Both the front and rear differential locks on the MT600B series tractors are electro-hydraulically engaged to ensure smooth, ac-curate locking and avoid transmission dam-age. This feature increases productivity and ease of operation.

    41

The TechStar transmission is comprised of two elements: a hydraulic and a me-chanical section. A torsional vibration dampener at the gearbox input absorbs shock loads. Hydraulic Section: A variabledisplacement axial piston pump (6) supplies variable hydraulic motor(s) (7). The pump and motor(s) (axial piston units) are connected and move together. Mechanical Section: The mechanical section consists of a set of planetary gears (2) and a range control (9). The collecting shaft (8), which accommodates the hydraulic motor(s), is rigidly connected to the mechanical section via pinions (collecting shaft).

    42

    F e a t u r e : P l a n e t a r y gear set

Advantage: On the transmission input side, engine torque is transmitted by the carrier at a constant ratio, either to the mechanical drive unit by the sun gear or to the hydrostatic unit via the ring gear. This is the same as in any planetary gear set for an axle. The planetary gear distributes the engine output variably to the mechanical and hydrostatic sections (POWER SPLITTING).

In the hydrostatic section the ring gear drives the variable displacement pump. The angle of the pump body determines the amount of oil that is delivered to the motor. This in turn determines the speed of the hydraulic motor(s). Thus, the speed of the collecting shaft is altered accordingly. Planetary gear set. In the mechanical section the residual torque is transmitted via pinions and the sun gear to the collect-ing shaft, where the torque values of the hydrostatic and mechanical drive trains are added together. Benefit: The planetary gear set provides optimum efficiency for the TechStar power-splitting be-tween mechanical and hydraulic power.

    Feature: Two speed ranges.

Advantage: To achieve maximum efficiency at very low speeds and high power requirements in the field, as well as at high haulage speeds on the road, the transmis- sion has two ranges.

Range 1 for field work Range 2 for haulage work

    Range X Forward mph/kph Reverse mph/kph

STANDSTILL If the tractor is at a stand still while the engine is running, the pump is at its zero posi-tion, and no oil is delivered. The motor(s) on the other hand are fully displaced (45 de-grees) and blocked by the pump. The collecting shaft, and therefore the tractor, is sta-tionary (and cannot freewheel).

  • FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER MT600B SERIES

    44

OPERATION To begin moving the tractor forward, the pump is displaced which causes it to start de-livering oil. This drives the hydraulic motor(s), the collecting shaft starts rotating, and the tractor is set in motion. The major part of the engine output is initially transmitted via the hydraulic section. The hydraulic pump and hydraulic motors are connected and are displaced together as follows.

Pump 0 degrees = motor 45 degrees (STANDSTILL) Pump 45 degrees = motor 0 degrees (TOP SPEED)

Shortly before the pump reaches its maximum angle, displacement of the motor ap-proaches zero degrees. As the motor swings back, (increasing resistance on the ring gear), the power is incrementally transferred to the sun gear, or mechanical section. This action results in higher ground speeds. Now, the motor cant take up any more oil, which blocks the pump, therefore, blocking the entire hydraulic section. The full en-gine output is now transmitted via the sun gear (mechanical section) on the input side of the transmission.

REVERSE The pump can be angled in either direction. For reverse, starting from 0 degrees, the pump is angled in a negative direction of travel, and displaced in the opposite direction of rotation. The angle of the motors remains fixed, allowing the delivery of oil to be dictated by the angle of the pump. As the pump angle increases in the negative direction, the ground speed increases in reverse.

he following features are responsible for the TechStar transmissions excellent efficiency. 1. Design of the hydrostatic units 2. Power splitting

Feature: Design of the hydrostatic units

Advantage: Conventional hydrostatic units allow a maximum displacement angle of only 30 de-grees. In contrast, the new hydrostatic units have a displacement angle of 45 degrees.

Benefit: (1) Substantially greater efficiency for the 45 degree axial piston pumps compared to conventional hydrostatic units. (2) A greater speed range is covered by the 45-degree displace-ment angle, therefore, fewer mechanical speed ranges are required.

    VAR0001VAR0013

    Feature: Power-splitting.

Advantage: A planetary gear set at the transmission input enables the engine output to be dis-tributed (split) in varying proportions to the mechanical and hydrostatic branches. The amount of power transmitted via the hydrostatic drive unit decreases with increasing speed. At top speed, the entire engine output is transmitted mechanically.

Benefit: This means maximum efficiency even at high driving speeds, especially since in range two the speed of 30 miles per hour can be reached at considerably reduced engine speed. In this case, the diesel engine is running at optimum consumption.

    TECHstar CVT

    Transmission

The TECHstar CVT transmission is the most highly respected transmission in the world. The Chal

lenger TechStar CVT (continuously variable transmission) is standard so you can fully exploit

the power and efficiency of the Challenger Endurance engines.Think a powershift transmission

is the answer in high-horsepower convenience and efficiency? Think again! Challenger

MT600B Series tractors take performance to a totally new level by including the industry leading

TechStar CVT (continuously variable transmission) as standard equipment. Through the combi

nation of proven hydrostatic transmission technology with conventional mechanical efficiency,

the TechStar CVT provides the operator with an unsurpassed level of economy and productivity

    through stepless transmission technology.

  • FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER MT600B SERIES

    51

Speed Ranges The TECHstar CVT has the advantage of offering the highest speed range in the industry. Range 1 provides 0-17 mph (0-28km) for heavy field work, while Range 2 provides 0-25 (0-40) for transport. A large speed range allows precise speed selection, which results in increased efficiency . If slower speeds are demanded, the TECHstar CVT can provide infinite creep speeds down to 60 ft/hr (18 m/hr).

Ecomomy The TECHstar CVT provides a feature which allows the operator to save fuel during transport. Being able to operate a tractor at a speed of 25 mph @ 1600 rpm makes transport much more economical. The benefit is reduced fuel costs as well as less operating time. It will also improve the life of the engine and decrease the amount of maintenance.

Efficiency The key efficiency feature of the CVT transmission is the unlimited speed selection. No longer must operators select between specific gears in different field applications. Op-erators, now, find precise speed settings which allow the tractor to operate at peak field speed while keeping the en-gine at the most productive RPM. Time, fuel, and wear and tear are all saved with this transmission.

  • FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER MT600B SERIES

    52

Power Splitting Transmission Using both the mechanical and hydrostatic capabilities at the same time, allows the transmission to operate with extreme efficiency. Less transmission wear, and maximum operator comfort are added bonuses.

Service Friendly The CVT transmission is very easy to access for maintenance. The tractor does not need to be split. As well pressure and diagnostic tests can be preformed to allow the mechanic to solve the issue without disassembling the tractor. The benefit would be less time in the shop. Which means fewer maintenance costs.

Ease Of Operation Controlling the tractor can be done with the left or right hand. You may accelerate or decelerate as well as change direction. A third option is the drive pedal mode, commonly used in loader work and applications demanding a lot of speed variation. The operator now has the option to control the tractor according to the job.

  • FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER MT600B SERIES

    53

Field Cruise Speeds The TECHstar CVT transmission provides operators with the ability to set four field cruise speeds. Two speeds may be set for either range. For example, one speed is set for precise planting while the second speed is set for slower turning on the headlands. With that operators can change speeds with just pushing the button without having to downshift or throttle back at the end of a row. This increases efficiency and frees up the operator to concentrate on other functions. Pre-Set Shuttle Speeds The TECHstar CVT also allows the operator to set precise for-ward and reverse take-off speeds. Speeds are displayed in the left hand LCD display screen. Speeds are determined by theo-retical speed at rated engine rpm

Fewer Parts The CVT transmission contains the least amount of moving parts compared to other powershift transmissions in the in-dustry. Fewer moving parts greatly decreases the potential for problems due to less points of wear. This creates a prod-uct that has a longer life span, increased resale value, and less maintenance cost. In fact, the only clutch in the entire system is used to engage the powered front axle.

  • FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER MT600B SERIES

    54

Turbo Clutch Function The Turbo Clutch allows the operator to use the brakes to stop the tractor without using the clutch pedal at lower en-gine rpms. This is beneficial to loader work, as well as any practice that demands the operator to inch the tractor along the ground. This allows the operator better control when hooking up an implement, as well as protect the machine and anything around it while performing loader work.

Separate Oil Reservoir One of the greatest advantages to the AGCO CVT is the use of a separate oil reservoir for the transmission. This isolates the oil in the system from the hydraulic remotes. This minimizes potential contamination from water and dust. As a result, transmission life, durability, and reliabil-ity is increased.

Forager Mode Forager mode allows operators to maintain a specified en-gine speed while using the foot pedal to adjust ground speed. This feature is beneficial in applications where a constant engine speed is required to maintain PTO speed or hydraulic flow.

  • FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER MT600B SERIES

    55

Pedal Mode When the foot pedal mode is activated, the tractor operates just like the automatic transmission in a car. As the pedal is depressed both the engine and the transmission will increase in speed. This feature works very well in a loader applica-tion by allowing the operation to become more efficient, thus getting more work done. Economy Mode This feature allows the tractor to reach maximum speed at reduced engine speed. Power Mode This feature supplies more engine power to achieve maxi-mum speed under heavy load.

Engine Supervisor Automatically engaged, the engine supervisor reacts when the engine drops under load. For example, the tractor hits a tough spot while working ground causing the engine to lug down. The supervisor kicks in when the engine lugs below the percentage set by the operator. It will react by decreas-ing the ground speed to keep the engine speed from drop-ping further. When the tractor is through the tough spot, the speed will then increase back up to the initial setting. Since this is done automatically, the operator doesnt have to concentrate on keeping power to the ground. Time and fuel are saved and lessen the risk of over-throttling and keeping maximum ground speed. The en-gine supervisor also works well in a PTO application when engine speed is very important.

Differential, Brakes, and Final Drives The MT600B series tractors feature a tested, proven design on their rear differential, brakes, and final drives. The rear differential can easily be engaged with the use of a rocker switch located on the right console. The differential is electro-hydraulically engaged to ensure proper, smooth engagement. Coupled with the rear differential system is the inboard rear planetary final drives. The final drives on the MT600B series tractors operate in an oil bath to ensure proper lubrication, reduced heat, and long wear life. The MT600B series tractors have smooth progressive braking supplied by wet, rear disc braking systems. This system consists of ring pistons, brake disks, and steel backing plates. In addition, the brake discs are immersed in hydraulic oil to keep the discs lubricated and cool. Dual brake actuation will electro-hydraulically engage the PFA (Power Front Axle) clutch. The CVT TECHstar transmission is also equipped with a Cardon Brake which supplies additional braking power on the PFA shaft. In addition, MT600B series tractors feature a transmission park brake as standard equipment. The park brake is engaged by a security switch on the shuttle lever. When activated, a hydraulic ram applies the brake pistons on each axle preventing the tractor from moving.

    57

Rear Wet Disk Brakes Wet rear disks brakes provide smooth, progressive, fade free braking. The wet system also keeps the discs cool during operation which maintains constant breaking power and reduces fade. Wet disks also reduce wear to provide for a long service life and reduced maintenance.

Automatic Four Wheel Braking (PFA Only) When both foot pedals are latched together during transport, four wheel braking will be engaged when the brakes are depressed. When the brakes are applied, the PFA is automatically engaged and braking power is supplied to all four wheels. This feature increases operator safety when towing heavy loads.

Park Lock MT600B series tractors are equipped with a park lock. The park lock is operated by a simple slide switch located on the shuttle lever. This engages a hydraulic ram located on the transmission housing. This same switch also locks the shuttle lever in place.

110mm Diameter Bar Axles Challenger MT600B series tractors are fitted with 110 mm diameter axles and have a length of 118 inches. This axle option provides wider rear wheel tread width ad-justments, and also provides extra space for dual wheel ap-plication. The added strength of the larger axle also provides improved adaptability for high torque field applications.

Independent, Power Take Off (PTO) is standard equipment on the MT600B series tractors. The PTO is driven by a live shaft from the engine. A wet, multi-disc clutch engages and disengages the PTO output shaft. A safety switch is designed into the engagement system to prevent the engine from being started if the PTO is in the engaged position. Additionally, the MT600B series tractors feature a convenient PTO cut-off switch on the outside of the tractor. This enables the operator quick access to disengage the PTO from the ground. All MT600B series tractors feature dual speed, 540/1000 rpm PTO. An economy 540 rpm speed is optional on the MT600B series. A digital display of the PTO speed is provided in the dash mounted instrument panel. All MT600B series tractors feature a bolt-on access flange that replaces the spring retainer clip. This provides greater strength during use under high loads.

Digital PTO Speed Display This display provides precise control of PTO driven implements. Allows operator a quick reference point for exact PTO speeds. It also eliminates guess-work associated with matching PTO speeds to engine rpms. Finally, this increases equipment accuracy and productivity.

Ground Level PTO Disengage Switch This exterior switch provides safe, quick access to disengage the PTO clutch without climbing back in the cab. Also, to ensure safe engagement, the PTO can only be engaged from the operator cab.

540 rpm Economy PTO The MT600B series can be ordered with an optional 540E/1000 rpm PTO. When operating equipment that does not require maximum horsepower, economy PTO allows the engine speed to be reduced 23%, from 2000 rpm to 1550 rpm, yet maintain full 540 PTO shaft speed. Slower engine speeds reduce fuel usage, noise, and vibration. The economy PTO helps to increase tractor utilization while reducing fuel expense.
