MEMBERS ANNOUNCEMENTS ROMAC Dear D9810 ROMAC Team, The last week has been somewhat hectic as we have received an urgent ROMAC patient from Timor Leste – a 9yo boy, Patricio Soares with his father, Norterto. By way of update, we are now in a much better place. Patricio was moved from RCH ICU into Koala Ward, Room 319 on Thu afternoon. He is on minimal pain relief and yesterday was able to spend a long time in a chair and some chest physiotherapy was commenced. He has regained his appetite in leaps and bounds, having devoured all the hospital food yesterday and two helpings of rice and chicken brought in by Yulitta last evening. We are still waiting for the pathology results and hopefully they will confirm the initial diagnosis of a benign tumour. A lot has happened since Patricio and Norberto arrived last Sunday afternoon. It has been a wonderful example of how the ROMAC team and our medical services can quickly swing into action to save the life of a child. I am most grateful for the immediate and committed support of home host Dianne Sides, Sponsor Club the RC of Clayton, Dr Ines Almeida (from Darwin Hospital), the wonderful staff at MMC and RCH and Yullita Owen and Carla Chong form our local Timorese ROMAC team

Presidents Report – 27 September 2017 We had our social night on Wednesday in the newly revamped LOC Bistro. The changes to the layout in the Bistro are great and give the Bistro a modern and relaxing atmosphere. Although we were only a small group we had fun and enjoyed the meal. I had a productive meeting with Lou Paola on Tuesday to further refine our Club promotional video. Once the changes are made I will meet again with both Lou and Terry Roche, on their return from Europe, to review and determine if further changes are to be made.

On Monday I attended the 48th AGM of the MWCIS at the Glendale Tennis Club in Glen Waverley. Chris Brassington was re-elected as President to continues with the great work that MWCIS does for our local community. The annual report also acknowledged the work that our Club does in providing continued support to MWCIS. The guest speaker was Dr Susan Alberti AC who gave a passionate and powerful speech that included, in part, her life journey, the support she provides as an advocate for Women’s AFL, her involvement in the Western Bulldogs, and the commitment and contribution that she makes to medical research and in particular juvenile diabetes. A great story. I have included in this week’s bulletin an invitation for our Club members to attend a fundraising event for the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund and the Early Life Mental Health Services at Monash Health. The charity fundraiser is being hosted by the RC’s of Clayton and Huntingdale and is being held at the Clayton Hotel on Friday night 27th October. Please give consideration to this event as it is a major fundraiser for Mental Health Illness. Our first major fundraising activity for the year is our Trivia night being held on Saturday 7th October. Beth has circulated a form to all members that is to be used to record the names of people sitting on tables. Please follow the instructions and forward the competed form to Beth. As this is our first major fundraiser for this year please book your table and come along, test your Trivia skills, have a fun night and in doing so support the Club. A early reminder for all members that we are holding a joint Membership night at the Waverley RSL on the 25th of October. Details will be provided by Rhonda McKenzie closer to the date. At this week’s meeting, 27th September, we will have as our guest speaker Linda Athans who will be talking about Blood Groups so it will be a very interesting and informative evening. The following week we have as our guest speaker, Jeremy Scott, who will tell us about his fascinating bike ride from London to New Zealand – well worth coming to hear his story. Members currently on holiday are Loretta, Robyn and Keith, Terry, Philip and Rhonda, Lou Paola, Beth and Charlie. See you Wednesday Geoff Logie-Smith

Both Anna and Mieke have overwhelmingly spoken in praise of the experience. They have come back very excited and full of ideas.

Many thanks Christine Avila College MENTAL HEALTH WEEK Dear Geoff, David, Sue and Alfred (Monash Cluster Presidents), I hope your respective President years are running smoothly and with plenty on the agenda.

The Rotary Clubs of Clayton and Huntingdale are pleased to announce that we have a “Hat Day Party” using the ‘Lift the Lid” campaign of Australian Rotary Health arranged for 27th October 2017. The details are attached. It would be fantastic if you could promote this event amongst your Club members. We believe that this would “lift the event” and give it a Monash cluster feel! The party is a stand up finger food and canapes affair with drinks at bar prices. It will be held upstairs at the newly refurbished Clayton Hotel. The ticket price of $30 is very reasonable and raffles, silent auction and lucky door prizes will aid the fund-raising. There will be an opportunity to hear about the approaches to mental health issues in the City of Monash. Funds raised on the evening will go to support Australian Rotary Health Research Fund and the Early in Life Mental Health Service at Monash Health. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I welcome you sharing this event with your members. Warren Fricke President 2017/18 Rotary Club of Clayton
