CONGRATULATIONS & CELEBRATIONS (Week of 28/9-4/10): None this week.

MEMBERS ANNOUNCEMENTS YOUTH On Wednesday night a group of Club members attended the Waverley Gymnastics Centre in Mt Waverley as a joint social evening. Members were given an introduction into the operation of the centre, a tour of the gymnasium to see gymnasts in action, followed by a light supper. The gymnastics centre is one of Australia's leading centres and has a 5 star rating from Gymnastics Australia and it is here right in Mount Waverley. The centre offers Junior, Educational, National and International programmes for gymnasts from the ages of 2 through to 21 years and has over 1800 members with a further 560 on the waiting list. It was recognised that the existing centre, which was originally part of the now defunct Syndal Tech, had reached it's maximum capacity, as evidenced by the waiting list numbers, and following a major funding raising programme funding was obtained from the Federal and State Governments, Monash Council and the Club's own contribution providing over $6 million to redevelop the centre which is expected to be completed towards the end of 2017. We were fortunate to meet Georgia Bonora who is a past dual Olympian and long time member of the Waverley Gymnastics Centre. Georgia, who is now retired and on the coaching team gave an overview into the training regime of gymnasts and the incredible numbers of training hours, often up to 30 hours a week, they put in to be successful. Our Club would like to thank the Waverley Gymnastics Centre Committee, including Cheryl Lacey and Ted Lawson, for allowing our Club to visit the centre and gain an insight into the activities of our up and coming gymnasts. The Committee is to be congratulated in their on-going efforts in promoting activities that provide our youth of today with an opportunity to participate in a sport that not only provides excellence but allows for fun, friendship and leadership aspirations. Geoff Logie-Smith PROGRAM Below is some information on our speaker for 12th October. It is quite a coup to persuade Scott to present to the Club, so I hope many partners will also attend: Scott Megee has been awarded the Master Baker of Australia award and is one of only 10 bakers in Australia to be awarded the honour. In recognising master bakers, the award highlights the extensive work and passion each individual brings to their craft. Scott has represented Australia for three years running in international baking competitions, the most recent being in the IBA Awards in Germany. His career in the hospitality industry began at the age of 15 when he started cooking pancakes at The Cuckoo. He worked for many years as a qualified chef with his career taking him around Australia. Then, in a major career change, Scott became a qualified baker. In 2007, with just four years’ baking experience, Scott was 2nd runner-up in ‘La Coupe Down Under’, Australia’s most well recognised Bakery Industry Awards. He was invited to join the first Australian World Cup Baking Team to compete at SIGEP, a major European competition and expo focusing on artisan bakery, gelato, pastry and confection, held in Rimini Feirra Italy. The team won First Prize in the Best Bakery Window Display category. Dedicated to lifelong learning, Scott began teaching in the field in 2000, in both culinary and bakery. His love of teaching means Holmesglen students have a fantastic mentor to learn from.
