Thinking With Pastor KotzerSupport Our Troops
It is difficult for me to realize that we have been at war for almost ten years as a nation. I am ashamed at times that I keep going my merry way without any consciousness of the fact that American soldiers are putting their lives on the
line each day. I see my family daily while those serving in the military can be separated from their families for as long as a year, and maybe more.
Presently, our Sunday School students and our Confirmation students send cards periodically to those in the military. Our youth
department is also in communication with those who serve from our congregation.
To let our members who serve know that their church cares, the Pastoral Care department will communicate with them on a formal, recurrent schedule. We will also submit their names to our Mount Olivet prayer chain.
Please help us by submitting names and addresses of military church members to the Pastoral Care department. If you would like to show your support to our troops in some way, please contact the Pastoral Care department for names and addresses. Our military people and their families will find great comfort from our caring.
Throughout the scriptures, the faith and character of soldiers has been recorded. Jesus, himself, recognized their faith and service also. Read Luke 3:10-14 and Luke 7:1-10.
Let us also recognize their sacrificial service to our country and their love for God and family.

Radio BroadcastNew Time
Effective Sunday, March 6, the radio broadcast of the Sunday morning Minneapolis worship service and Faith Alive program by Pastor Terry Morehouse will be on WDGY 740AM at 10am.
You can also listen online at www.mtolivet.org each Sunday.
Devotions and Daily Scripture Readings with Pastor Kotzer“Your Beatitude” • Numbers 6:22-26
While visiting Jerusalem, Pat Lund, Pastor Terry Morehouse and I were privileged to have a private audience with the world leader of the
Armenian Christian Church.
This was possible because he was a good friend with Mount Olivet member, Arsham Ohanessian. He was also good friends with Dr. John Najarian.
When we entered his reception area, Pat Lund asked him how we should address him. He told us, “Please refer to me as ‘Your Beatitude’.” Wow! I had heard of titles like pastor, deacon, and pope, but never “Your Beatitude.”
Beatitude means supreme blessedness or exalted happiness. In Latin, to bless is benedicere, which literally means: saying good things.
With that Latin definition of blessing, I grew warm to the title “Your Beatitude.” Just think - the worldwide leader of the Armenian Christian Church has the wonderful job of saying good things.
My mother repeatedly said, “If you cannot say anything good, do not say anything at all.”
Maybe “Your Beatitude” is there to remind us that we, too, are called, as Christians, to say good things about our God’s love and about others.
Say good things and you have earned yourself the title of “Your Beatitude.”

Lending a HandThat’s What Neighbors Do
When my grandfather passed away, my grandmother gave me his snow blower. In the
last six years it has run like a champ. No matter what the temperature, or how much snow was on the ground, it was my old faithful.
This winter my old faithful has gotten quite a workout. On the first snowfall of the season, I noticed my neighbor struggling to shovel his driveway.
Old faithful started right up, and we headed over to help him out and clear off the snow. As he began to thank me, I simply told him, “That’s what neighbors do.”
As the winter went on, and the snow
continued to fall, old faithful started showing all of its fifteen years. Finally, a cable snapped. So it was back to the shovel and me.
One day, as I struggled to clear my driveway, I looked up and noticed my neighbor coming over with his snow blower to help out. As I shook his hand and offered my thanks he replied, “That’s what neighbors do.”
One of the many things that I have come to appreciate about Mount Olivet Church is that we have a real identity as a servant congregation. This summer I invite you to be a part of the “Hope for Homes” ministry.
This is a unique opportunity to help our neighbors with home improvement projects that they would not be able to do on their own, such as painting,
ramp building, and drywall repair.
If you know the right end to hold a paintbrush—we can use you. If you can swing a hammer and miss your fingers 65% of the time—we can use you.
In the next couple of months we will have more information and chances for you to volunteer and sign up for one of our many projects. We do this because we are called to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
That’s what neighbors do.

Sunday Church SchoolThe Way
On Sunday, March 6, our kids will have a large group to learn about a very special time for our church: the season of Lent. This 40 day period is a time for compassion and reflection during which we recall Jesus’ journey to the cross. To make Lent more meaningful for our students, we will focus in class until Easter on Jesus’ last weeks on earth and the events that led up to his death on the cross.
No class on Easter, April 24, please worship as a family.
A Family Focus on LentLenten journeys are typically designed with adults in mind. We often overlook our children’s faith formation as we look to Jesus’ suffering and sacrifice on the cross. But how do we follow Jesus’ invitation—“Let the little children come to me”—when Good Friday seems too dark and dramatic for our little ones? Join Mount Olivet member, Liz Otteson, in an exploration of meaningful and appropriate ways to travel the Lenten journey as a family.

Family MinistryLenten Family Faith Talk: A Heart Check Upby Virginia Peterson
Lent commences on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. It is a time to devote ourselves to spending “a little extra time with God.” Share this faith talk as you begin your family’s Lenten Journey.
Theme Keeping our hearts in tune with God
Objects A play stethoscope (or paper rendition)
Scripture “Create a clean heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” -Psalm 51:10
At the doctor we usually encounter one of these. It is a stethoscope and the doctor uses it to listen to our hearts. (Pretend to listen to one another’s hearts.) The doctor hears what is going on inside of our bodies. Sometimes someone may look healthy but still have something wrong on the inside.
When the doctor puts the stethoscope on our chests he listens for a strong, steady heartbeat. An unusual sound might reveal a problem requiring medicine. Occasionally, a doctor detects something that indicates the patient needs surgery—sometimes even a heart transplant. It is wonderful that people use their God-given gifts to become doctors and nurses, helping people stay healthy.
Just as your doctor is concerned about your heart, so too is God. God is not listening for that strong and steady beat, but God is checking to see if our hearts are pure: filled with goodness, kindness and love for others. Even if the doctor gives your heart an “A+” at your check-up, it’s still possible for you to have some “heart problems” as far as God is concerned.
If things like anger, jealousy and selfishness are in our hearts, God wants to help us fix it. Lent is the perfect time to do that. As we prepare to celebrate Easter it’s important to “tune up” our hearts. It’s a time to fill our hearts with goodness, as we remember what Jesus did for us on the cross. Do you have some things in your heart today that shouldn’t be there? Let’s ask God to fix our hearts!
Dear God, you see what is in our hearts and sometimes find things there that shouldn’t be. Create a clean heart in us, O God. Amen.
