Program OverviewFoundation CurriculumIn the first year of MSW study, students learnthe generalist model of social work practice. That is, they study an overview of the professionand the basic methods of working withindividuals, families, small groups, organizations, and communities. They alsostudy subjects that support practice, such ashuman growth and development and socialpolicy. A special feature of the first year’scurriculum is an interviewing laboratory in which students practice communicationskills more intensively.

Concentration CurriculumIn the second academic year, students focus onknowledge and skills that help them becomeculturally competent advanced generalists. Inthe program’s definition, culturally competentsocial work practice uses the profession’sknowledge and the practitioner’s understandingof cultures to select and implement the methods that have the best chance of success with a specific client or clientgroup. Students may select the culture that is of most interest to them, and focus their studies on this group.

Field experience (supervised work in a community agency) is a feature of both years.

Year-Round Curriculum, Part-Time OptionThe mission of HPU’s MSW program includes special attention to students who must support themselves during theirgraduate education. For this reason, the MSW has been designed on a year-round basis, with a smaller number ofcourses per semester than is typically part of graduate curricula. A part-time option is also available. Most courses areoffered on Saturdays or weekday evenings for the convenience of working adults.

Graduate Learning• MSW candidates will be well prepared to practice

in culturally diverse environments.

• Students study in a microcosm of the globalvillage–almost a third of the total HPU studentpopulation come from more than 102 countries, another third are from Hawai‘i, and the remainder journey from the other 49 states.

• HPU classes are small and conveniently located onthe Downtown Campus.

• MSW students enjoy individual attention from HPUfaculty who are qualified in a broad range of social work areas.

Supervisedpractice in socialservice agencies

is an integralpart of thelearning

experience in theMSW program.

MSW Course Descriptions

“Welcome to HPU’s Mastersdegree in Social Work.

The profession of socialwork is about helpingpeople, and doing so from atime-tested base ofknowledge, values, andskills. Social workers havea "heart" for the oppressedand victims of socialinjustice. In our rapidlydiversifying world, socialworkers must reach outbeyond their own comfortzones to help those in need. That is why our area ofconcentration, Culturally-Competent AdvancedGeneralist, is so appropriatefor the 21st century.

The BSW prepares socialworkers for entry-levelgeneralist practice. Itprovides knowledge, values, and skills that can be usedin a wide variety of settings. In the MSW, the emphasis ison advanced practice, andon preparing the profession’sfuture leaders and scholars.

We hope that you willchoose to be among them.”
