• Advanced generalist practice involves: – Practice with diverse, multi-level systems to bring

about change within and across those systems, – Focused on the use of a strengths and

empowerment model, – Utilizing critical thinking, innovative and complex

methods of assessment, intervention, and evaluation to improve the quality of life,

– While working to achieve the highest levels of social and economic justice.

• Advanced standing program: 33 hours– For applicants with a BSW

MSW curriculum

• Foundation program: 60 hours

– For applicants who earned a bachelors degree in an area other than social work

– 2 years if full-time: foundation year, then advanced year• 14 credit hours in Fall and Spring

• Most classes are on weekday evenings, starting at 5pm, and on Saturday mornings– Classes may also be offered on weekday days

• Please note, some classes are only offered in the fall and only offered in the spring. Not all classes are offered in both fall & spring.

Interprofessional Practice Experience (I.P.E.)

Did you know?

• Medical error is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States and UT has built this innovative initiative to decrease these numbers. Social work student participation is crucial to raising awareness about emotional health and the social determinants of health.

I.P.E.• Required for foundation students in their first fall semester

• Recommended for advanced, but not required

• Class meets every other week on Fridays

– 1-3pm slot or a 3-5pm slot

• At the Simulation Center (IISC) building on the health science campus.

• Attend main kick off from 1-4pm at the beginning of fall semester and a closing event at the end of the semester from 1-4pm.

• Reflection papers are required (due the Friday after each learning module)

• Count 2 hours towards your field placement hours, every other week

Tips on writing the personal statement

• Be sure to read the program’s Mission Statement

– Stay with social justice theme

• Follow the guidelines: answer the questions and 1-2 pages max

• Pay attention to both content and grammar

• Don’t be shy, this is your time to tell us how great you are!

Be sure to answer all the ?s

– Factors that influenced your decision to become a social worker and pursue an advanced degree. How will this degree help you achieve your professional goals?

– A pressing social and economic justice issue, what makes this issue particularly salient, and ways you might address it as a masters-level social worker.

– Your experience in the area of social and economic justice, and any of your goals in this area beyond those addressed in the first part of this question.

– Accomplishments you believe are relevant, including ways in which you have demonstrated leadership in areas such as employment, volunteerism, Peace Corps/AmeriCorps/VISTA, and military service.

Having a criminal background

• Having a criminal background does not exclude you from being accepted into the MSW program

• However, it may affect practicum placement options

• It may or may not exclude you from being licensed in social work (contact licensure board)

After applying

• Applicants who completed their applications by December 4th will be notified of admission decisions by the end of February, early March.

• Your official decision letter will be sent in the mail by the College of Graduate Studies

After admission to the MSW program

• Successful applicants will:

– Be assigned an advisor

– Attend a mandatory MSW orientation session in April

– Be matched with an agency for their field practicum (full-time students)

– Attend a mandatory Field orientation session held in late summer (date TBD)

General information

• For financial aid purposes

– full time = 9 credits for graduate students in fall and spring

• 5 credits during the summer

– Full time MSW students take 15 credits in the fall and spring

• MSW instructors have a Ph.D. and/or MSW

• Most classes are held in Health & Human Services Building

Graduate assistantships

• A limited number of Grad Assistantships (GA) are available

• GA assignments for the Social Work Program are typically 10 hours of work per week. The GA receives a stipend ($2250 per semester) and ½ tuition paid

Sandra Sieben, MSWAssistant Lecturer, MSW Program Director

Sandy Sieben obtained her master’s in social work at The University of Michigan with a concentration in community organizing. She has experience working in micro social work with populations ranging from youth to older adults. She has a variety of international experience working to promote sustainable communities and education. Ms. Sieben is the Lucas County Human Trafficking Coalition Co-Chair.

Louis Guardiola, MSWAssociate Lecturer- MSW Field Director

Louis has over 25 years experience working in behavioral health and healthcare settings as a clinician and supervisor/director. He has presented at several national conferences. His areas of interest include cultural diversity and cross-cultural communication. Louis earned his BSW from U.T. & his MSW from Cleveland State.

Arvindh Natarajan, Ph.D., MSWAssistant Professor, MSW Advisor (A-L)

Dr. Natarajan’s teaching interests include practice, HBSE and research. He has experience working in family therapy, cognitive-behavior therapy and group therapy with clients struggling with substance abuse issues, depression, schizophrenia and obsessive compulsive disorder. His research interests include mental health, criminal justice, substance abuse treatment, and the use of art in the promotion of social justice and individual healing.

Megan Petra, Ph.D., MSW Assistant Professor, MSW Advisor (K-Z)

Dr. Petra teaches in both the BSW and MSW programs, and conducts research about addictions and family violence. Dr. Petra’s practice experience includes work with women, the LGBT community, older adults, & community groups.
