A CLOSER LOOK AT MSUM...GETTING IT DONE AT THE LINE

STRESE’S BIG WEEKENDNEWCOMERS CONTRIBUTE

VAN WYHE DELIVERSROEHRICH LEADS THE OFFENSE

NSIC RANKINGS

•With only six returning letterwinners, MSUM was expected to count on several newcomers to be key contributors this season. That includes junior guard Cheyenne Ironheart, a transfer from NDSCS, who has averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game off the bench this season. That also includes

junior guard Jessica Hart, who has averaged 3.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game in 17.7 minutes per game. She has four starts at the point guard position. True freshman guard Mallie Doucette has also appeared in all seven games and has 10 assists and four steals while freshman Cassidy Thorson has appeared in all seven games as well.

•The MSUM women’s basketball team was ranked third in the nation in free-throw percentage during the 2013-14 season, and the Dragons are once again off to a strong start at the free-throw line in 2014-15. Through seven games, the Dragons

rank 28th in Division II -- and fourth in the NSIC -- in free-throw percentage at 76.0 percent.Last weekend, free-throw shooting proved vital for the Dragons in their two home wins. MSUM beat Minot State on 64-60 on Friday and hit 30-of-36 free throw attempts, led by a 10-of-11 effort from sophomore guard Natalie Van Wyhe. A night later, MSUM hit 31-of-36 attempts in an 87-75 win over Mary which helped MSUM improve to 2-1 in the NSIC. Junior forward Savanna Handevidt, above left, was a perfect 8-of-8 from the line to lead the Dragons. For the weekend, MSUM shot 61-of-72 (84.7 percent). Van Wyhe is ranked 48th in the nation in free-throw percentage at 88.5 percent, which leads the Dragon squad.

• Junior guard Meghan Roehrich was the top returning scorer for MSUM in 2014-15, and she has emerged as the team’s top offen-sive player through seven games. She scored a career-high 32 points in a road win over San Francisco State on Nov. 20. The Fargo, N.D.,

native has scored in double figures in six of the Dragons’ seven games so far and is fourth in the NSIC in scoring at 17.0 points per game. Roehrich leads MSUM in scoring, field goals made (34), three-pointers made (12) and free-throws made (39). Her .447 field goal percentage is best on the team (minimum) 15 attempts.

Team •Free-throw percentage, 4th: 76.0 percent. MSUM climbed the charts in the NSIC after a big weekend at the free-throw line which saw them hit 61-of-72 free-throw attempts (84.7 percent). •Rebounding Defense, 6th: 36.9 and

Rebounding Margin, 7th: +2.4. A 53-28 edge in rebounds in the Mary win helped MSUM climb the rankings in the league.•Offensive Rebounds, 6th: 13.3 per game.Individual•Scoring, Meghan Roehrich, 4th: 17.0 points per game. Roehrich has been in double figures in six of MSUM’s seven games this season.•Rebounding, Heather Strese, 8th: 7.4 per game. Strese has two double-digit rebounding games this season.•Free Throw Percentage, Natalie Van Wyhe, 4th: 88.5. Van Wyhe hit 10-of-11 free throw attempts in the win over Minot.

•Sophomore guard Natalie Van Wyhe had one of the best games of her Dragon career in MSUM’s 87-75 win over Mary on Dec. 6. Van Wyhe had eight points, a career-high nine assists and a career-high eight re-bounds to help MSUM earn the

home win. Van Wyhe’s nine assists were the most a Dragon player has recorded in a game since Feb. 23, 2013 when Haley Thomforde dished out 10 assists in a win over Minot State. Van Wyhe scored a career-high 14 points a night earlier in a 64-60 win over Minot State.

•For four years, senior Megan Strese patrolled the paint for the Dragon women. She has graduated, and now her younger sister, Heather, has assumed a role as a key post player for the Dragons. Heather Strese had the best weekend in her Dragon career in the wins over Minot

State (64-60 on Dec. 5) and Mary (87-75 on Dec. 6). Strese scored a then-career high 17 points in the win over Minot and followed with 24 points -- a new career-high -- in the win over Mary. Strese also averaged 6.5 rebounds per game on the week. She is now second on the team in scoring at 11.0 per game.

COACHING BIOThe 2014-15 season will be Karla Nelson’s 15th as head coach of the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team. During her 14 years as head coach, MSUM has been a model of consistent success.

Nelson has 14 straight winning seasons as MSUM’s mentor. The Dragons have qualified for the conference tournament for 15 consecutive years -- having never missed a conference tournament -- including in all 14 years of Nelson’s tenure. The fastest coach in MSU Moorhead basketball history to reach the 200-win plateau, Nelson has accumulated a record of 240-159 in 14 seasons.

Also included in the success are three trips to the NCAA Division II post-season play, two national statistical titles, conference and region Coach of the Year endorsements and a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship. Nelson is fourth among NSIC coaches in total wins at their respective schools.

Nelson has also coached 32 all-conference honorees in 14 seasons. She led Angie Jetvig to four All-American teams including two consecutive Daktronics All-American honors in 2011 and 2012. Nelson also helped Megan Rettke and Alison Nash-Gerlach to second team Daktronics All-American honors in 2010.

In 2013-14, MSUM finished 16-11, highlighted by wins over regional qualifiers Wayne State (ranked No. 8 at the time) and Concordia-St. Paul. Zabel was named to the All-NSIC first team while senior forward Megan Strese was named to the All-NSIC second team. Both players surpassed 1,000 points for their careers during the season; Strese left MSUM ranked 11th all-time in scoring at 1,228 points while Zabel finished in 15th at 1,115 points. Senior guard Haley Thomforde also finished her career fifth in assists under Nelson’s tutelage.

The 2012-13 season saw a young Dragon team with just two seniors earn a 16-12 mark and a first-round win in the NSIC tournament. MSUM also earned a win over No. 17-ranked Augustana, which ended up qualifying for the NCAA Division II Final Four. Also in 2012-13, senior Marisa Yernatich set the new career three-point record at MSUM, while junior Megan Strese earned first-team All-NSIC honors. Zabel was an All-NSIC second-team selection.

The first coach at MSUM to debut with back-to-back winning campaigns, Nelson and the Dragons made their first appearance in the NCAA Division II North Central Regional in 2004-05, returned in 2006-07, and qualified for a third time in 2008-09.

The 2006-07 team reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth time in program history and made a serious run for the NSIC title, placing second in the league tournament and suffered an NCAA Tournament opening round loss to the University of North Dakota.

In 2008-09, the Dragons were ranked as high as 13th in the nation, after going on an 11-0 run to open the season. The season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, after picking up the first post-season win in program history. Nelson prodded her first club to a 15-12 overall record in 2000-01, the first winning season at MSUM in six years that also included a NSIC playoff invitation. In 2004-05 Nelson and the Dragons claimed their first NSIC outright title, cracked the nation’s Top-25 for the first time and received a NCAA Division II regional tournament invitation, the first time in the Head Coach’s career. MSUM finished 24-7 overall and set a Dragon single season record victories. Nelson was saluted as the NSIC Coach of the Year and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 7 Coach of the Year as well. The WBCA Region 7 Coach of the Year honor was her second, the first coming during the 2002-03 season.

Nelson served six seasons as the Dragons’ No. 1 assistant from 1994-2000. When Jean Roise resigned in March of 2000, MSUMDirector of Athletics Dr. Katy Wilson quickly promoted Nelson to the top post..

A recreation major, Nelson completed an undergraduate degree from North Dakota and a Master’s Degree from North Dakota State University in Health Education. Nelson was a member of the coaching staff at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years before moving to MSUM.

COACHING RESUME• Karla Nelson was promoted to head coach in March of 2000, becoming the 12th Women’s Basketball Coach in the 46-year history of the program. • 2014-15 is her 21st year in coaching at MSUM and the 15th as a head coach.• The fastest coach in MSUM basketball history to reach 200 wins.• Nelson served as a coach at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years prior to arriving at MSUM.• Played four seasons of basketball at the University of North Dakota, twice being honored as UND’s Best Defensive Player.
