Missing Sounds 1

This exercise has the following benefits

1. Phonemic Awareness

2. Auditory Discrimination

3. Auditory Memory

Instructions:1. Say the sound in the left column

2. Wait a moment to allow the student to “hear the sound” in their head (Internal Auditory). You may need to prompt them a few times to try to “hear” the sounds in their head. As they do this pay attention to eye placement. Most people will look laterally to their left when trying to remember sounds. However some people are “flipped” and will look laterally to their right. Which direction they look or if they look at all does not matter, only something for you to notice. If they look up and to the right (or possibly left) if may be an indication that they are a predominantly visual learner. Again, nothing wrong or right either way. Just something for you to notice.

3. Have them repeat the sound back

Do this exercise every few days until you are confident that it is very easy for them and that they are “hearing” it in their mind (practicing auditory memory). Watching the eyes will most likely, but not always, give an indication of whether they are “hearing” it or not.

One of the main points of this exercise id for the student to become aware of and practice internal auditory. It will also help with auditory discrimination as well as auditory memory.
