Score Noteworthy news from the Madison Symphony Orchestra SUMMER 2013 MADISON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA John DeMain | Music Director EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCES AWAIT WITH YOUR 2013-2014 SUBSCRIPTION THE Its a rare combination we have here in Madison: a truly great regional orchestra playing in an acoustically excellent hall with big-name guest artists under the baton of a world-class conductor. The critics agree: John DeMain has brought the MSO to a level where they not only tackle music of inner virtuosity but are comfortably confident and polished enough to bring it to surging, vital life, says Greg Hettmansberger of Madison Magazine. John Barker of Isthmus chimes in, adding, …the MSO played like a big league orchestra. And at a time when many conductors are settling into routines, our Grammy and Tony Award-winning Maestro continues to receive guest conducting invitations to the world’s great venues and companies, garnering critical acclaim as he goes. His month-long return to the Kennedy Center in Washington D. C. with Washington National Opera this month is just one more example. In a recent interview with Sandy Tabachnick of Isthmus, Jake Heggie, an enormously popular American composer who has worked closely with DeMain, articulated one of the reasons DeMain is in such demand, saying, John understands dramatic pacing and that everything is in service to the drama. That’s not true for all conductors. Hes a good symphony conductor because he brings out the theater in that music. He added, Theres no one like John DeMain. In my opinion, he’s one of the top conductors in the world. The 2013-2014 Season is our celebration of the many milestones we have achieved together as a community, and youll want to be there from the very first note. From our season premiere with Rimsky-Korsakovs beloved Scheherazadewith its brilliant solos for concertmaster Naha Greenholtz, who recently wowed us all with her Mendelssohnto Leonard Bernsteins Symphonic Dances from West Side Story in our season finale, youll hear virtuosic masterworks performed by an ensemble at the peak of its powers.
