• 1. Closed syllable- A vowel in a closed syllable is short, code it with a breve.
• 2. Open syllable- A vowel in an open, unaccented syllable is long, code it with a macron.
• Open unaccented syllable-
a in an open, unaccented syllable says (u) code it with a tittle.
i says (i) code it with a breve
e, o, and u are half long, code them with a modified macron.

• 5. Final, Stable Syllable- Bracket the final, stable syllable. Accent the syllable before it.
