Embeddedsystemsarehardware/softwaresystemsbuiltintodevicesthatarenotnecessarily‘recognised’ascomputeriseddevices,butthesesystemsdocontrolthefunctionalityandperceivedqualityofthesedevices.Somespecificexamplesofembeddedsystemsinclude:controllersforsystemswithinacar;theautomaticpilotofanaircraft;thechipsetandsoftwareforsmartphones,tabletsandsmartTVs;wirelesssensornetworksforambientintelligence,apacemaker;andcontrolsystemsembeddedinrobots/mechatronicmachines.Thegrowthrateintheembeddedsystemsindustryismorethan10%perannumand,accordingtoforecasts,therewillbemorethan40billiondevicesworldwideby2020.
TheTUDelftMasterofScienceProgrammeinEmbeddedSystemsfocusesonthedesignmethodologyofhardwareandsoftwareuserenvironments.Itcoversawidespectrumoftopicsrangingfromintegratedcircuitdesign,computerarchitecture,communicationnetworksandreal-timeoperatingsystemstosoftwareengineeringandformalmethodsforembeddedapplications.Asanessentialcomponentintheinexorableprocessofminiaturisation,itisanexcitingengineeringscienceofthefuture.
TheEmbeddedSystemsprogrammeisa3TUprogramme.The3TUfederationmaximizesinnovationbycombiningandconcentratingthestrengthsofthethreeleadinguniversitiesoftechnologyintheNetherlands–DelftUniversityofTechnology,EindhovenUniversityofTechnologyandtheUniversityofTwente-inresearch,educationandknowledgetransfer.

Thelinkbetweencomputerscienceandelectricalengineeringhasalwaysintriguedme,soIwasoverjoyedtofindoutthatTUDelftofferedtheMScprogrammethatistheperfectcombinationofthetwo:EmbeddedSystems.ThefeaturethatenticedmethemostwastheflexibilitythatTUDelftoffers.Giventhemulti-disciplinarynatureoftheembeddedsystemsdomain,itoftenrequiresknowledgeofcontrolsystems,computerengineering,appliedphysicsorsimilarareas.Theflexibilitytotakecoursesofyourchoiceatanyfacultyishighlybeneficialinthisregard.Inadditiontotheprogramme’sworld-renownedreputation

Programmegraduatesmayexpectexcitingcareers,sincethereisanacuteneedforcompetentembeddedsystemsexpertsduetothegrowthinsystemfunctionalityandtheexpansionofapplicationareas.Careerperspectivesareexcellent,inallareasofthemanufacturingworld,throughoutEuropeandparticularlyintheNetherlands.Europeishometosomeoftheleadingcompaniesinautomotivetechnology(Daimler,BMW,BOSCH),avionics(Airbus)andconsumerelectronics(Siemens,Philips),andembeddedsystemsplayimportantrolesinallofthesesystems.
TheNetherlandshasalsoacquiredastrongpositioninembeddedsystemsduetothepresenceofsuchcompaniesasPhilips,NXP,ASMLandOcé.Therearealsonumerouscareersforembeddedsystemsengineersinacademia,wheretheseskillsareinhighdemandaswell.
ThereisacloseconnectionbetweenTUDelftandtheIndustry.DuringyourstudiesyouwillgettheopportunitytogetincontactwithHightechSME’sviainternshipsandthesisprojects,butalsoviatheEEMCSrecruitmentdaysandthetechnicalcareerfairwhereyoucangetyoufirstjobinterviews.
IamtheheadoftheEmbeddedSoftwaregroupthatfocusesonthesoftwaresideofembeddedsystems,withspecialemphasisonwirelessdevices.Thecombinationofsmall,resourcescarcedevicesandtheerrorpronenatureofwirelesscommunicationsconstitutesaninterestingresearchchallengewithregardtodesigningandimplementingrobustsoftwarethatcanoperateautonomouslyinawiderangeofconditions.Exhaustivetestingbyindividualdevelopers(asiscommonpracticeintheindustry)isnotenough,asthenumberofsystemstatesisgrowingexponentiallywiththenumberofnetworksandotherdevicesinvolved.Inthisregard,oneofthePhDstudentsisdevelopingasoftware-testingframeworkbasedontheconceptofcrowdsourcing.HeisdevelopinganAndroidapplicationthatparticipantscaninstallontheirsmartphones,thusallowingresearcherstouseit,asoneofalargepool,torunnovelsoftwareonasmanyphonesaspossibleinordertospeedupthedevelopmentcycle.ThisexampleistypicaloftheEmbeddedsystemsgroup’sphilosophyofconductingexperimentalresearch.Inthisvision,itisfinetodevelophigh-levelconcepts,butitisonlybyimplementingthemonrealhardwarethatwecandiscoverwhethertheycanwithstandthemanyintricaciesofembeddedsystemsfoundinpractice.Accordingly,studentsintheMScprogrammeinEmbeddedSystemsreceivehands-ontrainingthroughavarietyofprojectsandlabs,ofwhichthequad-rotorprojectrunbytheESgroupisarguablythemostprominentexample.
IfyouholdaDutchBScdegreecloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogramme,youwillbeadmitteddirectly.However,ifyourundergraduateprogrammeisnotcloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogrammeyouwillberequiredtotakeadditionalcoursesinwhatiscalledabridgingprogramme.Thismaybeastandardprogrammeoritmaybetailoredtoyourspecificsituation.
