Electricityisthemostflexibleandefficientsourceofenergytopowermankind.Ifweimprovetheexploitationofsustainableenergysources,electricityissuretoplayaleadingrolethroughouttheforeseeablefuture.
Inthedecadestocome,arevolutionwillunfoldinthegenerationanddeliveryofelectricalpower,drivenbythelargescaleintroductionofrenewableanddistributedpowergeneration,theneedforenvironmentally-friendlyandsustainablecomponentsandtheliberalisationoftheenergymarkets.Electricalsustainableenergyengineersareneededinordertodesignnewcomponentswithaneyetowardssustainablematerialsandefficientconversionprocesses,aswellastointegratethemintoasmartandadaptableelectricityinfrastructure.
TheMasterofScienceprogrammeinElectricalEngineeringatTUDelftoffersthetrack:ElectricalSustainableEnergy.
Ifyouareinterestedingettinganindepthunderstandingofthechallengesthatelectricalengineersmustovercome,youmustjointhistrack.Theprogrammecoversawiderangeofissues,includingrenewableenergy,smartgrids,environmentallyfriendlymaterialtechnologies,thedecentralisationofpowergeneration,power-systemsoperations,powerelectronicsandelectricalmachines.TheDepartmentofElectricalSustainableEnergywillprovideyouwithanumberofoutstandingresearchfacilities,includingtheHigh-VoltageLaboratory,theSustainableEnergyLaboratory:DENlab,aReal-TimeDigitalSimulatorandthePowerProcessing(ElectricalMachinesandElectronicConversion)Laboratory.TheprogrammestartswithseveralcompulsorycoursesthatprovideyouwiththebasicsofElectricalSustainableEnergy.Duringthesecondsemesterofthefirstyear,youcanchooseanin-depthspecialisationbasedontheprofilessuggestedbelow.

HighVoltagefocusesonHighVoltageTransmissionNetworksforlargescaleimplementationofRenewableEnergySources(solar,wind,wave),developmentofintelligentmaterials,monitoringofHVsystems,andtheoptimizationandcontrollabilityofHVtransmissiongrids.
SmartACandDCgridsfocusesonthegeneration,transmissionanddistributionofelectricalenergy,anditexplorestechnologicaloptionsforthedesignandoperationoffutureintelligentpowergrids,whichwillbesubjecttosustainabilityandreliabilityconstraints.Thetopicsofmicrogrids,e-mobilityandsmartcitiesarealsocoveredwithinthisprofile.
PowerElectronics&ElectricalMachinescoverselectricalpowerprocessingandconversion,withanemphasisonimprovingefficiencyinindustrialprocesses,offices,homesandE-mobility.Italsocoverstheoperationanddesignofelectricalmachines.

I’mPavolBauerheadoftheDCsystemsandStoragegroup(DC&S).WeinvestigatesystemintegrationofrenewableenergysourcesandenergystorageinDCnetworksandsystemsandfutureDCtransmissiongrid.ExamplesincludeexcitingapplicationssuchassmartcitieswithDCmicro-gridsandrenewableenergysourcessuchassolarandwindenergyandenergystorageintheformofelectricvehicles.TheintegrationofrenewableenergyviaDrPavolBauer,DCSystems&StorageDCnetworksofferslowercostandhigherefficiencyasmostofthesourcesandloadsarehavingDCcharacter.Chargingelectricvehiclesdirectlyfromphotovoltaicenergy,theimpactofE-mobilityonthegridandsolutionsforcontactlesscharging(stationaryandonroad)ofelectricvehiclesaresolutionsforsmartcitiesofthefuture.Storageplaysanimportantroleinfuturesmartcitiesintheformofelectricvehiclesbutalsobeyond.Understandingdifferentstorageoptionsandtheirbehaviourisessentialforthesystemintegrationofrenewablesources.FutureDCtransmissionHVDCgridsarealsoinvestigated.TheDC&SlaboratoryhasascaledsetupofaHVDCgridcontrolledbyarealtimesimulator(OpalRT).HVDCpowerconversiontechnologyandcontrolofsystemse.g.withwindenergyarehereexperimentallytestedandverified.HighVoltagediagnostics&monitoringandHighVoltageDCMaterials&ComponentsarealsoinvestigatedandexperimentallytestedinHVthelaboratory.TheDC&Sgroupiswellconnectedtotheindustrywithalargenumberofnationalandinternationalresearchprojects,whichofferstudentspossibilitytojointheresearchteamandcontributetoafuturesustainabledevelopment.
