Integrated basin studies:
• Geology and geophysics are closely integrated at various
scales, from regional plate tectonics to basin and reservoir
scales.
• Mainly sub-surface studies based om seismic and/or well
(logs, samples) data – also some field based studies.
• Teaching is closely related to research activities at the
department covering a wide range of disciplines such as
sedimentology, structural geology/tectonics, geophysics,
petroleum geochemistry, stratigraphy and paleontology.
MSc Petroleum Geoscience
MSc Petroleum Geoscience
(GEO3240 from BSc)
(GEO3211 from BSc)
Key master thesis topics include:
• Basin analysis – structure/tectonics, stratigraphy (incl. analogue/numerical modeling)
• Source-to-sink – uplift/erosion and subsidence/deposition
• Petrophysics/rock physics and compaction
• Petroleum systems (reservoir, seal, source rocks)
• Seismic imaging (e.g. sub-salt) and reservoir geophysics
• CO2 storage
•

Norwegian continental shelf – a unique laboratory
• Much of the data base used in the teaching and in the research projects are from the Norwegian continental shelf and margin.
• After ~50 years of exploration and production these basins are among the best studied and documented in the world.
• Large amounts of seismic and well data are available for teaching and research at Norwegian Universities (online with “PetroBank”).
