    2010 Zone 3 Championships

    Continued on page 8

    by Trish Magyar

Nearly 80 contestants from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia went at it over two-and-a-half days to determine who the top shooter in Zone 3 was.

The weather covered the full spectrum… Friday afternoon was in the mid/upper 80s with (by Michigan standards) ab-normally high humidity, flat gray skies, and breezy condi-tions. No one was able to post a perfect score posted in Doubles event, but three 99s shot-off. Brent “I’m leavin’ on a jet plane” Edwards was the first to miss, so off he went to his grandmother’s 90 birthday party in Tennessee. Four stations later, Dave Star-rett bested Howie Bailey for the Championship. Class winners were: Jim Roussel (AAA); Fred Tschantz (AA); Gary Lowe (A); Bill Wainscott (B); Todd Carlson (C); and Greg Pike (D). Lady Champion was Trish Magyar; Sub-Junior Champion, Jared Davenport; and Junior Cham-pion Akshay Verma.

Saturday’s conditions were warmer and more humid than Friday, but (thankfully?) there was virtually no wind. Ex-pectations were high, given the great shooting conditions. Everyone put forth their best effort, producing seven perfect scores in the 12 gauge and six in the 20 gauge. Among the 20 Gauge 100’s was Sub-Junior

12 Gauge - Roussel Wins, Moore, R-UP, and Acosta 3rd.

20 Gauge - Grates Wins, Tschantz, R-UP, and Pollister 3rd.

Jared Davenport, with his first ever – way to go, Jared! Jim Roussel emerged the victor after only seven stations, with Jeff Moore, Runner-up and Gus-tavo Acosta, 3rd. Howie Bailey (AAA), Dave Schiebel (AA), Gary Gorrell (A), Tim McLane (B), Jim Moll (C), Bill Crawford (D) and Dick Schroeder (E) were at the top of their classes. Lady Champion was Sue Huszai; Sub-Junior Champion, Robert Yaryan; and Junior Champion, Akshay Verma. When all was said and done with the 20 gauge shoot-off (it took a mere FOUR stations to produce the win-ner), Kurt Grates emerged the Champion, with Fred Tschantz in the Runner-up spot, and Ray Pollister 3rd. Al Magyar topped AAA; Larry Israel, AA; Gary Gorrell, A; Jared Davenport, B and Sub-Junior Champion; Todd Carlson, C; and Sam Donnelly, D. Lady Champion was Sue Huszai, and Junior Champion, Akshay Verma. After the first two events, there were two con-tenders perfect: Kurt Grates and Fred Tschantz.

Sunday the humidity sub-sided, with scattered clouds but with the threat of thun-derstorms, which ultimately stopped the shooting in the afternoon as we waited out a couple of weather cells with lightning striking all around. When it was time for shoot-offs,

the wind picked up a couple of notches making for some dicey conditions. Four 100’s in the 28 Gauge headed for the shoot-off field... Dave Starrett took the Championship in five stations, with Kurt Grates Runner-up and Jim Roussel, 3rd. Howie Bailey was AAA1; Gustavo Acosta, AA1; Jeff Moore, A1; Mark Edwards, B1; Bill Crawford, C1; and Jerry Barefoot, D1. Robert Yaryan was Sub-Junior Cham-pion; Akshay Verma, Junior Champion; and Trish Magyar, Lady Champion. With one event remaining, there was only one shooter still perfect – Kurt Grates.

Despite the interruption in shooting, one shooter was able to come through the “baby bore” unscathed... Dan Burgan, from Kentucky, shot his first ever 100 in ANY gun in the .410! Nice shooting, Dan! There were no 99s, so the 98s headed for the shoot-off field to determine the remaining two positions on the podium. Gustavo Acosta won the battle to take the Runner-up position over Howie Bailey, 3rd and Fred Tschantz, AAA1. The remaining class top honors went to Larry Israel (AA); Ray Pollis-ter (A); Greg Mahalak (B); Todd Carlson (C) and Sam Donnelly (D). Trish Magyar was Lady Champion; Robert Yaryan, Sub-Junior Champion; and Akshay Verma, Junior Champion.

In the High Over All event Gustavo Acosta and Kurt Grates shot-off 396s, with Acosta the victor. Gary Gorrell was alone in Third place with a 395. Only one other shoot-off were re-quired to determine the remain-ing class winners: Fred Tschantz (AAA); Jeff Moore (AA); Jim Roussel (A); Greg Mahalak (B); Jim Moll (C); and Richard Rine (D). Sue Huszai was Lady Champion; Robert Yaryan, Sub-Junior Champion; and Akshay Verma, Junior Champion. In the High All Around, Fred Tschantz won his shoot-off for Champion in a shoot-off of 492’s over Howie Bailey (Runner-up); Dave Starrett was Third. Class honors went to Jeff Moore (AA), Ray Pollister (A), Dan Burgan (B), Jerry Martin (C), and Dick Schroeder (D).

Scott Behnke, his Assistant Manager, Danny, and their reli-able Detroit Gun Club crew and referees, once again, performed to perfection. Chef Lori, and her very capable waitresses (Jessica and Jenny) and kitchen staff (Janine and Greg) served up a superb dinner Saturday night of grilled pork tenderloin, rice pilaf and grilled vegetables, and also made sure that no one went hungry (or thirsty!) for the entire weekend with an amaz-ing menu that would rival some

of the finest restaurants. Ann Hampton, as always, greeted the shooters with a cheery smile, and with her helpers, Kathy and Sue, made sure the scores were promptly posted and the shoot-off sheets ready to go when

It was a beautiful weekend! Motor homes and Trailers began to arrive mid-week and by Friday, August 27, 2010, at Detroit Gun Club, Scott Behnke had prepared for the annual gathering of the flocks. The day was beautiful with sun and blue skies, even Mr. MotorState, Al Magyar, couldn’t remember a more beautiful weekend. Winds and rain had become a regular at the State shoot in frequent years. But this year would go down in the books as “simply marvelous.”

Friday started out with the Doubles event and out to the fields they went. The shoot-offs were many in this event but only one perfect score could be found. Howie Bailey’s 100 took the event with runner-up going to Bob O’Brien with his 99 and Duane Lamley took 3rd with his 97. The AAA winner in this gun was David Scott and AAA2 went to Dave Schiebel. We generally give out awards to the 5th place at the State Shoot and so here they are: the AA’s went to Ray Pollister; Denny Tanis; Brent Edwards; Pat Darga; and Rich Curlett. A’s were: John Fournier; Jim Militello; Dean Rossman; Pete Pantalena; and Pat Wusthoff. B’s were won by: Bill Brown; Tom Holton; Jeff Strauss; Ed Bowker; and Bob Pantier. C’s went to Matt Glynn; Jeffrey Rimer; George Mayhak; Todd Carlson; and Richard Schroeder. D’s came in this

Saturday night at the State Shoot is always special with many awards given out. This is also the night that we normally do the Hall of Fame Induction Cer-emony when we have a candidate to enter the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, this year there was no candidate for induction.

After our dinner and all the fixins, no one is able to move, so the festivities start. We started our awards by giving out those won in shooting on Friday and Saturday. These were followed by several First 100’s certificates and our All State Team Awards. The day ended with friends gathering to discuss the days events and some of us partied into the night. Several different clubs gathered and invited the “Yoopers” down to the “Trailer Trash City” and a great time was had by all.

Sunday arrived once again with beautiful sunshine and hot temps. Another great day was underway. The 20 gauge event is shot on Saturday and Sunday and brought only six perfect scores. Out to the field they went for shoot-offs. The 100’s were shot by John Fournier; Dave Scott; Mike Kremski; Al Magyar; Dean Rossman and Duane Lamley. When the smoke cleared the results were: Fournier, Event Champ; Scott, Runner-up; Kremski, Event 3rd. The AAA’s went as follows: Al Magyar; Ray Pollister; Brent Edwards; George Gilliam, Jr. and Howie Bailey. AA’s were Dean Rossman; Duane Lamley; David Pratt; Dave Schiebel and Ryan O’Leary. A’s went to Larry Crites; Dave Ruokolainen; Trish Magyar; Ed Howe and Tom Holton. B’s were: Greg Mahalak; Ron Snider; Loraine Malloy; Kyle Wierzbicki and Terry (Duck) Sprowl. Michigan State ShootContinued from page 18

Michigan has an unusual event for the 12 gauge teams. We call it the “Friendship Teams” and we are matched by averages so that each team has an equal chance of winning. This is also great for meet-ing and shooting with folks from all over the state that you may not have previously known. A great experience for all involved! Our winning team this year consisted of: Dave Ruokolainen, Bill Primeau, Jeff DeSano and Duane Lamley with a phantom score from a missing shooter. They shot 483/500.

The 12 gauge event brought us only three 100’s. Heading for the fields were Trish Magyar, Don Nelson and Dave Scott. When the smoke cleared it was Trish as Event Champ. We haven’t had a lady champion in many years so the roar could be heard in Alaska when she shot her last target. GO GIRL! Nelson was Runner-up and Scott took 3rd. AAA1 went to Mike Kremski; AAA2 to Brent Edwards; AAA3 to Howie Bailey; AAA4 to Al Magyar and AAA5 to George Gilliam, Jr. AA1 was Duane Lam-ley; AA2, Ray Pollister; AA3, Dave Ewers; AA4, Dean Rossman; AA5, Rich Curlett. A1 went to John McGinnis; A2 to Ryan O’Leary; A3 to Glenn Ul-brich; A4 to Doug Haines; and A5, Len Smith. B1 went to Dan Hankinson; B2 to Peter Pantalena; B3 to Jeff Strauss; B4 to Greg Mahalak and B5 to Mike Pepper. C1 went to Jeff DeSano; C2 to Alan Popp; C3 to Jim Devroye; C4 to Jeffrey Rimer; and C5 to Hunter Derenski. D1 went to Bill Primeau; D2 to George Mayhak; D3 to Judy Wusthoff; D4 to Bill Crawford; D5 to Kent Dolmyer. E1 was taken by Murray Hollingshead; E2 by Richard Schroeder; E3 Bill Richardson; E4 by Justin Broecker and E5 by Gene Swanson.

Fournier wins 20 Gauge, Scott wins Runner-up and Kremski takes 3rd.

Trish Magyar wins 12 Gauge, Nelson wins Runner-up and Scott takes 3rd.

Rossman wins HOA, Scott takes Runner-up and Magyar takes 3rd.Continued on page 20

We need to send a few words of thanks here to Scott Behnke, Debbie Behnke and their great crews who gave us a great week-end. They worked over and above the normal and al-ways give us a wonderful week-end and a wonderful shoot!

    Also, our deepest thanks to

the State Shoot Committee for a job well done. They are Trish Magyar, Chair; Brent Edwards, Loraine Malloy, Dave Scott and Scott Behnke, Chief Referee. I hope you were there for the great time. If you weren’t, you missed a lot of fun. We’ll look for you next year, you could go away a Champion! Just ask Trish!

    B-K Cup Prelim & Doubles

Once again, Scott Behnke and his dedicated staff not only come up with a new theme, but always seem top the previ-ous year’s performance at the Kasle Family Charity Shoot... Friday’s conditions were near perfect – sunny, blue skies and a light wind. Surprisingly, there were only three perfect score in the Friday morning prelimi-nary B-K Cup event; the 74’s took the next five spots, and the remaining two spots were determined in a shoot-off of 11 73s after the Doubles event was completed. In the afternoon, ev-eryone took to the fields for the Doubles Event, with two shoot-ers perfect. It only took Mike Schmidt eight pair to capture the Championship over Sam Armstrong, Runner-up. Seven 99s shot-off for Event 3rd, with Craig Parsons claiming his spot

    12 & 28 GaugeSaturday dawned with over-

cast skies and a light rain for the morning flights; scatter clouds mid-day. Fourteen shooters managed to post 100’s in the 12 Gauge Event. Three made it through the first two boxes of the shoot-off; Marc-Andre Jodoin, Wayne Mayes and Craig Parsons. Wayne missed in the 3rd box, settling for 3rd. Jodoin missed the first time on four in the 4th box, but Parsons was un-able to close the deal. However, the next time on four he did not let the opportunity slip away again, claiming the Champion-ship over Jodoin, Runner-up. The top finishers in class were George Lehr (AAA); Ian Smin-gler (AA); Shane O’Brien (A); Jim Sykes (B); Bob Refice (C), Richard Rine (D); and Sharon Barefoot (E). Gayle Osborne was Lady Champion and Aaron Johnson, Junior Champion. Six went straight in the afternoon’s 28 Gauge Event, with Chuck Isaac the Champion after four pair. The Runner-up and Third shoot-off continued into the next box with Rick Lawry Runner-up over Pat Wustoff. Class honors went to Sam Armstrong (AAA); Pat Darga (AA); Scott Sobiegray (A); John Massman (B); Jason Baldwin (C); and Jerry Barefoot (D). Trish Magyar was Lady Champion, and Akshay Verma, Junior Champion. The end of the first day saw only one indi-vidual 200 straight – Marc Val-

lencourt. However, there were five shooters only down one target, and another seven down two. Now that the routine mat-ters were taken care of, we could get on with the show!

Kill All the Golfers! The B-K Cup, which was

previously the Walker Cup, debuted ten years ago with the idea of putting some fun back into competitive skeet shoot-ing. Each year has had a differ-ent theme… WWF; Rock Stars; West-Side Story (Sharks vs Jets); NFL (AFC vs NFC); Heroes and Villains; NASCAR; Professional Rodeo; Pirates; the Olympics; and Woodstock. Lauren Best and Roger Kasle are the cur-rent sponsors, hence the “B-K Cup”, of the 75-bird .410 Event 6, in which the top ten shooters compete for a beautiful Water-ford Crystal trophy filled to the brim with cash. But, as you will see, the shoot-off isn’t conduct-ed under the “normal” rules. This year’s theme was “Puller Shack” taking cues from the movie Caddy Shack. The show opened with the theme music from the movie and a rather large gopher (John Fournier in full costume) running around. Carl, the greens keeper (Robert Paxton), opened with a mono-logue about the importance of a well-groomed course that kept the audience in stitches… something about his own spe-cial blend of grass. Then the gopher got the better of him

and he unleashed an explosion to rid his course of the gopher once and for all, which ignited the fireworks display. The ten finalists, dressed in plus-fours and argyle, “addressed” the first station with a lot of whopping and hollering from the crowd. Each one had their caddy to carry their gun and advise them on how to best approach the shot. Our “on-the-course” com-mentary was provided by Judge Smails (Billy Ray Suggs) and Al Czervik (Mike Kremski in Rod-ney Dangerfield’s role), which kept the audience and competi-tors laughing. Flash targets are used, to add to the excitement for the spectators. For those who don’t know, the B-K Cup is not like any other shoot-off you will ever witness… there’s music blaring, the crowd heckling, and the commentators interrupt-ing to question the shooters on what they are going to do on the next shot or what they did on the last! (We have club mem-bers who aren’t even registered shooters that come out each year to watch this event; it’s no wonder that DGC has a reputa-tion for treating everyone to a great time!) Given the crowd participation, it’s no surprise the competitors, one by one, quickly bogeyed… Wayne Mayes emerged as the Champion for his second trip to the podium (some may recall that he made a pretty cute little pirate his first time).

    20 Gauge & .410For Sunday’s events, the

weather was what fall in Michi-gan is all about… a beautiful day; cool in the morning with partial clouds, warming in the afternoon and mostly sunny. There were 21 100s posted in the 20 Gauge Event, but only five managed to make it through the first box, with Jim Sykes eking out 3rd place late in the 2nd box. Kurt Grates and Ian Smingler went into the third box with Grates the victor over Smingler, Runner-up. Top class finishers were: Armstrong (AAA); Billy Williams (AA); Don Nelson (A); Doug Keister (B), Vickie Rogers (C) and Tom Schnur (D). Lady Champ was Gayle Osborne and Junior Champion, once again, Verma. Two perfect scores were posted in the .410 event – Michael Blades and John “I think I’ll stick with my release trigger” Herkowitz, even though it only took two stations for Blades to win the Champion-ship. Seven 99s fought it out for the remaining spot on the podi-um, with Mike Schmidt claiming 3rd. Chuck Isaac (AAA); Mike Stewart (AA); Pete Pantalena (A); John Massman (B); Loraine Malloy (C) and Tom Schnur (D) rounded out the class winners, with Verma the Junior Cham-pion and Ellie Hawthorne Lady Champion.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Scott Behnke and his Detroit Gun Club crew outdid them-selves, again, at this year’s Kasle Family Charity Shoot. Without the support of our sponsors Roger and Matt Kasle; Lauren Best and John Haugh, this event, the attendant show and cash donation to the Alzheimer As-sociation would not be possible. Once again, a grand time was had by all at the best gun club in the country. Untold thanks go to all our sponsors for their gen-erous support and donations; Scott Behnke and his assistant manager, Danny, for a great job of ensuring the targets flew true; the excellent referees for keeping their thumbs on the buttons and giving the targets to us when we called for them; Chef Lori, her kitchen staff (Janine and Greg) and waitresses (Angie, Jessica and Jenny), who made sure that no one went hungry (or thirsty!);

High Over All & High All Around

When all was said and done, Sam Armstrong and John Herkowitz were in with 398s for the HOA Championship. A full round of doubles, total score, is used to determine the Champion. Herkowtz missed on the 6th pair, but pulled even after Armstrong missed on the 10th pair. However, a miss by Herk on the final pair settled it all, with Armstrong hitting his pair and claiming the HOA title. Six 397s battled it out for the remaining spot on the podium, with Smingler the winner on the fourth pair. Class winners were Schmidt (AAA); Blades (AA); Sykes (A); Massman (B); and Malloy (C). Huszai was Lady HOA Champion. In the HAA event Armstrong was alone with a high score of 498, followed by Schmidt (AAA); Andy Spooner (AA); Pat Darga (A); John Mc-Ginnis (B); and Loraine Malloy (C).
