M&S Series Atomic Absorption Systems Thermo M5 AA Performance Specifications
Thermo Electron Corporation's Atomic Absorption Range offers revolutionary stylish and fully automatic AA
Spectrometers, coupled with intelligent accessories capable of outstanding performance.
M Series Dual Atomizer Systems
The concept of the M Series is simplicity itself. Using a Stockdale double beam Echelle optical system means
that each beam passes through a separate atomizer. The user defines which is the sample beam and hence which
atomizer will be used. As a result flame to furnace changeover can be fully automatic and take place
unattended. Productivity is significantly enhanced and performance guaranteed.
S Series Single Atomizer Systems
The radical S Series instruments offer the highest levels of multi-element productivity and reduced cost of
ownership for no compromise, single atomizer analysis. Standard features include QuadLine background
correction, double beam optics, Universal inert burner, furnace and burner auto-optimization, plus full QC
protocols.
Mi and Si Spectrometers

Main Spectrometer Descriptions Mi or Si Spectrometers
Choosing the Mi or Si will give you Intelligent Spectrometer Qualification (iSQ). The iSQ module consists of a
motorized filter wheel containing a set of calibrated filters (traceable to a primary set held by the National
Physical Laboratory, UK (NPL)), the iSQ module is mounted in the instrument (LH side for S Series, RH side
for M Series) and provides the following suite of automated system performance checks:
• Wavelength accuracy
• Photometric stability
• Monochromator resolution
• Photometric stability
• D2 Background correction accuracy
• Lamp Peaking Test
• Beam Selector Movement Test (Additionally for Zeeman instruments only)

to Graphite Furnace, Vapour or Mercury Cold Vapour absorption modes by ordering the appropriate accessory
atomizer.
M Series
Automatic Dual Sample Compartment Atomic Absorption System, with full multielement capability, controlled
by a data station running SOLAAR software under Windows®. Flame absorption /emission systems can be
extended to Graphite Furnace, Vapour or Mercury Cold Vapour absorption modes by ordering the appropriate
accessory atomizer. The MQZ and MQZe spectrometers must be ordered with a Zeeman Graphite Furnace to
provide a working system. Optical system All systems (except the MQZ) are supplied with Stockdale double
beam optics giving maximum signal-to-noise ratio during signal measurement. All mirrors are silica coated,
and the optics are sealed against dust ingress. The self-calibrating Ebert (S Series) or Echelle (M Series)
monochromator provides automatic wavelength and bandpass set-up. The high energy QuadLine background
correction system corrects for up to 2A of background with less than 2 % error, and is fitted as standard to all
instruments. AA Series spectrometers are fitted with a 6 position data-coded, auto aligning lamp carousel, with
6 independent power supplies modulated at 200/240 Hz. With the carousel, automatic analyses of up to 16
elements in a single method are possible. The standard range photomultiplier covers the wavelength range from
185 nm to 760 nm, with a wide range option covering 180 nm to 900 nm. GFTV is an option on all systems.
Flame System
All AA flames are supported by the Universal 50 mm titanium burner with chamfered slot design giving high
solids handling, excellent flame stability and low carbon build-up. The burner height is automatically
adjustable, and controls are provided for the burner rotation and transverse position. An optional 100 mm burner
for air/acetylene flames is also available. Automatic flame ignition is provided by a high tension electric spark.
Flame systems are controlled by either a fully automatic gas control system (S4 and M Series) or a semi-
automatic gas control system (S2). The S4 automatic gas control system uses programmable array state logic
and binary flow switching technology for reliability. Oxidant gas changeover, and fuel and oxidant flow rates
are software controlled and interlocked to prevent operation with incorrect burners and gas flows. With the
S2 semi-automatic gas system, the fuel flow rate is controlled by a precision needle valve and rotameter display.
Oxidant changeover and fuel gas flow boost are software controlled, and the burner interlock ensures
burner/flame compatibility. On both systems, a flame sensor, responding to all flame types including hydrogen
fuelled flames, ensures safe gas handling if the flame goes out. All fuel gas lines are fitted with flame arrestors,
and with pressure sensors to provide automatic safe shutdown if the line pressure falls below the safe limits.
Both gas control systems shut down safely if the power fails. The totally enclosed, draught proof “kitchen” area
has a safety door containing a heat and UV absorbing window. The inert fluoroplastic spray chamber contains
an inert adjustable impact bead and flow spoiler, and low memory hydrophilic disc chamber front end. It has
built in over pressure relief and automatic empty drain protection. The standard spray chamber configuration is
suitable for all flame types. The inert nebulizer with a Pt/Ir capillary and PTFE venturi is standard and is factory
optimized.
Graphite Furnace Systems S Series
The GFS97 Integrated Graphite Furnace and Furnace Autosampler can be fitted without removing the spray
chamber or disconnecting the gas lines.
M Series
All Graphite Furnaces are fitted in the RH Sample Compartment of the M Series Spectrometers. The M5
Spectrometers will accept the GF95 Graphite Furnace, while the M6, MQZ and MQZe Spectrometers will

accept the GF95Z Zeeman Graphite Furnace. The GF95Z Zeeman furnace is mounted on a prealigned Tilt
Mount, which can be tilted forward out of the sample compartment to allow access to the furnace for
maintenance purposes, and to allow other accessories to be fitted into the sample compartment. The
GF95 Furnace is fitted with a pre-aligned Fixed Mount as standard, but can be optionally fitted with the Tilt
Mount if required. The FS95 Graphite Furnace Autosampler is mounted in front of the RH Sample
Compartment with a simple self-locating 'push in' mount.Graphite Furnace TeleVision (GFTV) Optional on all
AA Series Spectrometers, the GFTV accessory provides high definition images of events inside the Graphite
Furnace cuvette, allowing monitoring of the sample injection, dry and ash phases of the furnace program. A
CCD camera mounted in the instrument produces live video for display on the Data Station's screen through the
GFTV Software and Interface Kit, or on an external monitor. The external monitor should be monochrome,
PAL compatible with a minimum screen resolution of 400 lines, and a coaxial video cable with BNC plug for
connection to the spectrometer.
Electronics
Spectrometer electronics are based on the Motorola 68340 microprocessor, with the system firmware residing in
Flash PROM. Firmware can be downloaded to the Flash PROM from an external PC without removing any
covers. Interfacing to the Data Station, autosamplers, furnace and associated accessories is via RS232C at 9600
baud. The vapour system is interfaced via a dedicated 8 pin socket.
Data Station Control
The spectrometer system and accessories are controlled via a Data Station running the SOLAAR AA Software
Package under the Microsoft Windows® 98SE, Me, NT v4, 2000 or XP operating systems. The Data Station is
a Personal Computer, with a typical configuration of: 800 MHz Pentium processor or equivalent. 128MB RAM.

Graphite Furnace Cuvettes
Normal (Electro graphite) Cuvettes
Description: The normal cuvette is made from a form of graphite called electrographite. This cuvette is suitable
for the determination of volatile elements such as Pb, and Cd in simple matrices, such as clean waters.
(Pyrolytically) Coated Electro graphite Cuvettes
Description: This coated cuvette is a modified electrographite cuvette, coated with a thin layer of pyrolytic
graphite. Coated cuvettes are required for the carbide forming, mediumvolatile and refractory elements and for
samples with complex high salt matrices.
Extended Lifetime Cuvettes (ELC)
Description: ELC's are unique to Thermo and have a pyrolytic coating that is up to 10 times thicker than the
standard coating. This gives them more stable performance and much longer useful lifetimes than either of the
electrographite-based cuvettes. These cuvettes are especially recommended for high throughout analyses with
complex samples and when measuring the most refractory elements.
Omega Platform Extended Lifetime
Description: Omega platform cuvettes have an integrated L'Vov platform built into the cuvettes, which
makes them particularly suitable for determining the more volatile elements in heavy matrices where vapour
phase interferences cause severe problems. The integral platform is designed to accommodate up to 50 µL
volumes and so can provide excellent concentration limits. The Omega cuvettes use the ELC coating
technology and have similar long, stable lifetime characteristics.
