poi Warner Brothers Pictures came in"today. e stated some time next week they contemplate havinga print of the_Qictur§ based upon the Matthew Cvetic story

C>UIh@s A QQmmunist §bv for the FBI." He stated a final 'title had not been assigns 0 1S picture but this wouldprobably be done in the next few days, and he doubted thatthey would use the title above-mentioned. '

_stated Warmer Brothers contemplates takingCvetic to the various cities where there are Hearst papersand getting the local Hearst papers to sponsor Cvetic alongwith American Legion Posts. He wondered if we had anyobjection to this. I told him frankly it was too late forthem to come to us for advice, they could do whatever theywished.

He then wondered if it would be possible for the ~Director to do a short recording pointing out the need for citizens to report information to the FBI. I told him the lgDirector had spoken on this subject on numerous occasions ~but under no circumstances would the Director make a recording Vwhich would be utilized with the picture. He understood this [1and asked that I forget he asked. I told him that we . _ **simply would not have any part in doing anything which would -~constitute an endorsement of this or any other picture. - r F

ITH sharp timeliness Warner Brothers Pictures malres available this weehto the theatres of the nation a hard luttmg sub|ect dealing with the4.. rnmumst conspiracy under the tntle, l Was a Communist tor the F B.l

The timeliness of thus picture is sharply emphasized against the current disclosuresof Commumstrc activities on the part oi some Hollywood people whncn have beenbrought out an the Un American Activities Committee hearings an Washington

These disclosures are inevitably disquieting to the American public which rightnow is 92l92 no mood lightly to excuse the lund of Red penetrahon which toold placeIll Hollywood and about which too little indeed was done

-0- -0- <-

The one fatal danger to WlllCll the motion picture was exoosed was Red coloringof the picture itself As us now well lmown nothing of ll'llS land was allowed to talreplace There may have been some lacl of watchfulness about employee loyaltyI the stuc|o§ostered by ideological confusions WllICl'l were quite general notonly with he public but In government as well and by no means conned toHollywood But there was no lacl: oi watchfulness about what went on the screen

The a-ge ..se- |r-dustry is this time avendlng the sally adzentu es Lp>1 wh|.h llembarked at the l'l"lO ol the earlier probe at Hollywood by the UnArner|canActmtues Committee This time ll is sensibly recognizing the nght and duty ofthe Congressional Committee to expose treason and is COOPOl8l'Ih§ accordingly

But the public opmlon impact of the disclosures, deallng with names which thepublic famnluarly associates with the screen, ls by no means good tor the motnonpicture business Hence the advent right now of the Warner Brothers picture isespecially fortunate and opportune

Under the generalshlp of Mr Jacl L Warner and with the spmted cooperationof Mr Bryan Foy there emerges l _l Was a Qornnwumst §or_the__F.B.l. ya powertuland moving dramatic narrative. The industry in its higher purposes W hecessitieshas not been too fortunate in some ol the subjects dealing more or less directlywith the Communist conspiracy which have been previously released. It is for-tunate in this one.

The picture within the limitations oi a popular dramatic subiect is revealingand informative relative to some of the most poisonous aspects oi the Red intrigueas practiced in this country. But tor purposes of audience impact it is tar morethan that. It has a very real warmth and appeal, dealing centrally with the re-telling of the true story of e genuine national hero who made a great sacricein the nation's defense.

+- 0- 4- V

Audiences will be moved by such incidents es that of a father who so loved]'|is country es to be willing to appear as e traitor in the eyes of his son and will.be thrilled by melodramatic ashes of the hind which have long been representativeof the craftsmanship of Bryan Foy. 4The theatre men who is alert to the repercussions of the current Washington

revelations will in his owe immediate interest and in his solicitude tor the welfareof the industry at large see in this current Werner releese esignicant opportunity.Tho subject ought to be played enthusiastically-broadly across the nation andl'uy' ~ M|r!in Quigley

The episode began with Cvetic traveling to Canada in thecompany of a Russian Secret Police Agent, Hr. Milhigh phonetic!.Cvetic had been furnished the name of one Hr. Ferguson by the FBI as fa confidential contact in Canada. .During the trip Milhigh, inresponse to a question by Cuetic, startled Cuetic by calling him anFBI Agent. He then made the remark that in the Russian SecretPolice work each Agent looked on everyone as a potential FBI Agent.

Upon arrival in Canada, Cvetic contacted Ferguson who told him about an espionage case involving a leak of secret informationfrom the Owlshead Project, a joint Canadian-American guided missileproject. Ferguson exhibited pictures of Owlshead workers whom hesuspected andwfurther mentioned that hdlhigh might be the logicalRussian contact man in this case. .

While in Canada, Cuetic lived at the Communist Party Head-".quarters and taught classes in a Communist Party school. He wasintroduced as the Secretary of the Slav Congress in the United States. At the Party Headquarters he observed a young blond girl whom he sus-pected qf working for the Party. He discovered that this girl was asister of one Paul Verner, and he recognized Verner as one of the S isuspected workers at the Qwlshead Project. He subsequently ascer-tained that Verner had been coerced in some way into furnishing plantsecrets to the Party and that his sister was acting as his unwilling "vicourier. _ _. /la,

He reported 2%?§.gnformation to Ferguson, and it was ~planned that the police qficials attempt to get Verner to confess by

We have had the etymology oi the word- ttraced as far back as possible and are informed it is a DUTCH familyname o£"a.ncient origin and has no established meaning,'except as "raped"by certain American Cartoonists and commentators and used in slang form"

The word was first used by a "crack=;:brained"_ cartoonist in theearly 30's who thot he had invented a new word. At first it appeared asonly redicu1ous,but of late has become seriously annoying - havingnitwits call us at 3 P.M. and wise cracking. How would you feel, wereyou in our place?

The narrator stated that all names and places were fictitiousbut as you can see the name is very much real.

Will you lclndly see that all future radio or T.V. programsusing F.B.I. material, delete the name- from it'_s identification ofcharacters. We have no objection to the name -be:Lng used providedit is identified in it's true character.

who advised that he might have made a statement to the 4 ":I92_a'.;effect that the program was based on material from the files of the FBI; that 9__,_'he knew the program was not actually based on FBI files and that any misstate- ment was made through carelessness. He advised -that he regretted the mis- -statement that he had made and in the future would do no "ad libbing" concerning Ithis program but would use records or disks furnished by the producers of theprogram. He stated that while in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War IIhe had spent many months at Quantico and had -a great respect for the FBI andwould not intentionally make any. incorrect statement concerning the Bureau.

_ KOVO, advised that he had instructedmot to do any _further_ "ad libbing" concerning the program.

From the way the announcement was made there could be no questionbut that anyone hearing it would receive the definite impression that theprogram wa repared from the official files of the Bureau. I do not believethatqiil repeat the mistake, and it is indicated that it was a -careless mistake.
