Hades and Persephone
Persephone was the first living being to visit the Underworld where Hades ruled over the souls of the dead.
![Page 27: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Zeus and Demeter were the parents of Persephone. Demeter was the goddess
of the harvest, and Zeus was the King of the gods
who ruled from Mount Olympus.
![Page 28: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Hades, god of the Underworld, fell in love with Persephone and wanted her as his bride.
![Page 29: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
His brother Zeus did not have a problem with the marriage, but he knew Demeter would not want her daughter to live in the dark Underworld.
![Page 30: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
So, Hades planned to kidnap Persephone and force her to marry him.
![Page 31: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
One beautiful day, the sun shone brightly in the sky, the hills were lush and green, and flowers were blooming.
![Page 32: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
The beautiful, young Persephone skipped and danced with her friends upon the hillside, as her mother Demeter sat near by, and her father Zeus peered down from the sky above.
![Page 33: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
The girls laughed and whispered secrets to each other, as they gathered handfuls of purple crocuses, royal blue irises and sweet-smelling hyacinths.
![Page 34: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Thinking of her mother, Persephone was about to gather some flowers for her when she saw one of the most enchanting flowers.
![Page 35: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
It was a narcissus. When she reached down to pluck it from its resting place, the earth began to tremble and split in half.
![Page 36: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Hades suddenly appeared in his four-horse chariot. The god dropped down upon Persephone, grabbed her up with one arm, and left flowers scattered all over the ground.
![Page 37: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
None of her friends even knew what happened to her.
She cried out for help, but no one heard her .
![Page 38: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
As Hades and Persephone disappeared into the depths,
the hole closed up behind them.
![Page 39: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Soon Demeter came to meet her daughter, but could not find a trace of Persephone. Sad and panicked, Demeter searched high and low for her daughter.
![Page 40: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
She traveled to the farthest corners of the earth, searching for nine full days and nights without everstopping to eat, drink, bathe,
or rest.
![Page 41: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
As she searched, Demeter
destroyed lands, crops, and
livestock.
![Page 42: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
She said she would make the earth fruitless
forever if she did not find her
daughter
![Page 43: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
On the tenth day, Demeter
finally found out her daughter
had been kidnapped and forced to marry Hades.
![Page 44: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
She was distraught about her
daughter, but the gods would not help her
rescue Persephone from Hades.
![Page 45: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
Therefore, Demeter refused to return to Mount Olympus and wandered the earth to keep the trees from bearing fruit and the land from bearing vegetables and herbs.
![Page 46: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
After a year, people began
to die of starvation as the
earth became barren and lifeless.
![Page 47: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
Zeus realized that he had to do something to bring back fertility to the earth, so he promised to reunite Demeter
with Persephone as long as she had not eaten any food in the Underworld.
![Page 48: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
Unfortunately, Persephone
had eaten 6 seeds from the
fruit of a pomegranate.
![Page 49: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
Therefore a compromise had
to be reached: Persephonehad to stay in the Underworld
for 6 months, one month for
each seed she ate.
![Page 50: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
For the other 6 months,
Persephone could be reunited on earth with her
mother.
![Page 51: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
During the 6 monthsPersephone is in the Underworld as the wife of
Hades, the earth is cold and
lifeless.
![Page 52: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/52.jpg)
WhenPersephone returns to earth,
the trees bear fruit and the
flowers bloom.
![Page 53: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/53.jpg)
TheEnd
![Page 54: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/54.jpg)
Think about the two stories “Pandora” and
“Persephone”
![Page 55: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)
Which of the women would make a better leader of a country?
Think about what traits each woman has, and what traits a leader should have.
![Page 56: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
List out four traits for each character
Persephone
Pandora
![Page 57: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
Now thinkAbout what traits a person needs tolead a country.
Traits
![Page 58: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/58.jpg)
Make a campaign poster
for your candidate for the
leader of your country: Pandora or Persephone
![Page 59: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/59.jpg)
Now, let’s write a summary
explaining the story of Hades and
Persephone.
![Page 60: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/60.jpg)
We’re going to use a special formula to help
us write our summary:
SOMEBODY WANTED BUT SO
![Page 61: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/61.jpg)
You put a name or event for
each word. Somebody=whoWanted=a goal or desireBut=problemSo=solution
![Page 62: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #8: prefix/suffix Mythology: “ Hades Takes a Wife: Persephone ” Writing Process: revision.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5a4d1aed7f8b9ab05997c0a5/html5/thumbnails/62.jpg)
Now, try to fill in each space
