Compare and Contrast Compare and Contrast To compare means to talk about the similarities

between things To contrast means to talk about the differences

between things.

Vocal + Reticent In Harrison Bergeron, Harrison decides he would be

vocal about his displeasure of being handicapped while his father was reticent about his disagreement with it.

Both Mrs. Mallard and Georgiana longed for freedom in their lives. Mrs. Mallard was reticent about wanting freedom from her husband while Georgiana was quite vocal about needing freedom from her birthmark.

Subway + Viaduct Both a subway and a viaduct is a passage

through which something is transported, however, a subway carries people and a viaduct carries water.

Conduct + Manipulate Julie conducts her class in such a way that

they want to work for her. Lisa however, has to manipulate her kids into completing simple tasks.

Cause and Effect Cause and Effect A cause is something that makes something else

happen. Out of two events, it is the event that happens first. To determine the cause, ask the question "Why Did it Happen?"

An effect is what happens as a result of the cause. Of two related events, it’s the one that happens second or last.  To determine the effect, ask the question "What Happened?"

Consume + Malnourish Forest fires consume trees and plants that become

malnourished over time and as a result, a rejuvenation of plant life occurs.

Acquire + Manacles The burglars foolishly thought they could acquire wealth

through thievery; consequently they ended up in the county jail with a pair of silver manacles to add to their fortune.

Malicious + Consequence Rumors don’t always begin with malicious intentions;

nevertheless, spreading information that isn’t true is always met with dire consequence.
