BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Lemuel Coover Shattuck was born in 1866 in northwestern Pennsylvania. At the age of
sixteen, he came to southeastern Arizona to work as a cowboy for his two half-brothers,
who had established the Erie Cattle Company in the Sulfur Spring Valley north of present ---
day Douglas. Four years later, Shattuck left the cattle company to find work in various
mining camps including Tombstone, Mammoth, Globe and finally Bisbee, where he married
and started a lumberyard. Within a few years he had opened a bar and acquired a franchise
from the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association. Shattuck later founded several mining
companies, the Shattuck-Denn being the best known. He also developed the famous El
Tigre mind in Sonora and started a cotton industry in Winterhaven, California. Shattuck
died in Bisbee on September 7, 1938.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The bulk of the collection deals with he business interest of Shattuck: Mining in Arizona
and Sonora, banking in Bisbee and cotton farming in the Imperial Valley of California.
There is also a great deal of family correspondence and some genealogical data. Two
important events in Shattuck’s life are not covered in detail. One is the operation of El
Tigre Mine in Sonora. The other is the famous ‘‘Bisbee Deportation’’ and attending labor
unrest in Bisbee during the First World War. The absence of material on the Bisbee
Deportation --- if it ever existed- suggests that the information was purged from he collection
prior to its acquisition by the Arizona Historical Society.
SERIES NOTES
Series One, Correspondence (1874-1950), contains incoming and outgoing correspondence
covering a wide range of topics. Shattuck frequently mixed business with personal
correspondence, making it impossible to separate the two. Many of the personal letters to
old friends contain brief, but significant glimpses into life in Cochise County at the turn of
the century. Some letters also contain brief mention of the Bisbee Deportation. Significant
corespondents included Thomas P. Bardon (business associate). Archibald Chisholm
(business associate), W.W. Douglas (business associate), Wiley Fitzgerald (business
associate and personal friend), Grenfell Family (relatives), Keating Family (relatives),
William Lutley (business associate and personal friend), Thomas O. McGrath (business
associate), Shattuck Family and correspondence regarding the Cochise Development
Company, The Seventy Nine Mine, the Shattuck-Denn Mining Corporation, The
Winterhaven Commercial Company and the Winterhaven Townsite Company. 28 boxes (14
linear ft.) arranged alphabetically.
Series Two, Corporate Records (1898-1928), contains a variety of business material dealing
with the Cochise Copper Mining Company, the Cochise Development Company, The Denn-

include agreements, incorporation data, reports, stockholders information and related
information. 2 boxes (1 linear ft.) arranged alphabetically.

Shattuck’s holdings in Bisbee, California, Douglas, Pennsylvania and Yuma. 1/2 box, (.25
linear ft.) arranged alphabetically.
