System ArchitectureOptiSwitch9000 series is a high-performance system with non-blockinghardware and software architecture engineered for deployment in newdemanding Ethernet network environments to support the providers

value-added services offering. The platform offers a unique combinationof features and optical interfaces that enable easy and exible eldcongurations while making it ideal for maintenance and inventory.

Back-to-back installation in Telco racksThe OptiSwitch9000 series 10-inch depth design enables the installationof two systems, back-to-back in standard 19-inch Telco racks. This featureenables doubling the port-per-rack density.

Front facing system congurationThis feature eliminates the need to dismount the system for maintenanceor installation of new hardware following initial installation.

Fiber guard/protection trayThe front ber tray is indented in relation to the front panel to allowadditional space for connectors and cabling to be convenientlyconnected to the rack. This indentation is ideal for installations of high-

density ber optic cables, where connector space is critical for connectorintegrity.

Optical SFP interfacesSFP interfaces provide unmatched deployment exibility to enableversatile multimode, singlemode, and single ber connections, or evenshared physical ber CWDM or DWDM connections simply by meansof the use of a specic SFP. In addition, the OptiSwitch9000 series offersthe optional MultiService optical WDM module (O9-ADCxx) for Add/Dropand aggregation from its optical interfaces to a single outgoing ber.Such a function offers better ber utilization and physical servicesseparation with dedicated Gigabit rate for premium services forbusinesses that are geographically dispersed.

OptiSwitch9000 MPLSThe OS9000 series enables Layer 2 VPN services based on Ethernet overMPLS protocol. It supports Martini MPLS L2VPN, and Hierarchical VPLS(H-VPLS) PE-r spoke services that scale the VPLS service and simplies

multipoint topology. The MPLS L2VPN offers Virtual Leased Line (VLL)services or so called Pseudo Wire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3)regardless of traversing protocols. The MPLS functionality is enforcedwith highly exible mechanisms to create trafc engineering (RSVP-TE/CR-LDP) connection-oriented paths and predined rules for protection.

OptiSwitch9000 Quality of ServiceCarriers can offer different types of trafc/services carried into IP/Ethernetnetworks with better control in order to reduce the load from their corenetworks, using the following features:

Layer 2-4 packet classication using QoS access control entries

CoS mapping between layers (802.1p, IP ToS or EXP MPLS) Trafc management using ingress policing and egress trafc shaping

Bandwidth enforcement per ow: single and dual rate tree-color marking

Congestion management Scheduling of ows to interfaces

Congestion avoidance WRED* for predictive early packet discarding

The OptiSwitch 9000 series enables a value-added networkinfrastructure, with end-to-end QoS. The OptiSwitch9000 advanced ASICdesign supports full CoS and QoS including classication, rate limiting, shaping, weighted round-robin scheduling, and strict priority for lowerdelay, low jitter and guaranteed throughput in real-time applications, including voice over IP, video-on-demand, and IP TV services. Fornetwork convergence applications that have a clear boundary betweencustomers and carriers networks, Layer 3 (IP ToS) and Layer 2 CoS(802.1p) can be mapped/marked to preserve priorities or map them intopredened proles set by the carrier.

SecurityThe OptiSwitch 9000 series offers advanced security capabilitiesthat can provide protection against malicious attacks while enablingAuthentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA). The internalsecurity engine can administer vast Access Lists and advanced featuressuch as port security, and set of Layer 2-4 network trafc securitypolicies.

    Layer 2 security Management VLAN

Isolation of Customer VLAN from Provider VLAN

Layer 2 management protocols ltering and tunneling MAC ood protection security

    Port-based authorization/control - IEEE802.1x

Layer 2-4 proles Access Lists inspect each incoming packet and permit/

deny according to predened rules Rate limit for protection against Denial-of-Service (DoS)

IP spoong protection in ASIC Filtering of incomingpackets spoofed from an indirect network connection

by an IP source CPU DoS protection and Internal rewall

Access Control List (ACL) mechanismsThe OptiSwitch 9000 ASIC-based technology enables a secureenvironment, preventing Denial of Service (DoS) attacks by using a rangeof layer-independent ACL together with QoS protective techniques such

as rate limit for per-service based streams, source MAC address learninglimit, and comprehensive IP ACL rules. Each Access list has an action rulethat determines whether a packet will be forwarded or dropped in caseof an unsuccessful hit. If a packet satises an ACL rule at any layer, varioushandling actions can be dened.

StatisticsThe OptiSwitch9000 series enables the collection of extensive statisticsand diagnostics to enable exible billing, trafc planning and rapidtroubleshooting. Thanks to this spectrum of statistics, service providerscan better tune their network operation, in general, and bandwidth, inparticular, and charge customers accordingly. The spectrum includes: Statistics proles (packets and bytes counters).

Ingress and egress byte statistics used by subscriber/service (VLAN) or per class

Counters per physical port per CoS Counters per queues

ManagementThe OptiSwitch 9000 system can be managed out-of-band froma craft terminal with a Serial/RS-232 connection and inband froma TELNET/SSH or SNMP station. Using MRVs powerful SNMPmanagement application, MegaVision, all the devices on a networkcan be centrally managed from a single host (e.g., PC) via a LAN orthe World Wide Web. Central management by MegaVision allowsthe network managers to access their management elements viaany browser console through an authentication control interfaceand to have complete control of an entire map of devices forconguration, performance analysis, and inventory control.

Physical Layer OAMVirtual Cable Diagnostics (VCD)Network monitoring is an essential tool to debug network occurrences.OS9000 offers remote layer 1 testing incorporated by Virtual Cable

Diagnostics (VCD), a special tool using the time domain reectometry(TDR) to diagnose cable and link problems on OS9000 copper ports. The copper port operates as an extension to localized servers or anyservice over CAT5/CAT6 in a radius of up to 100 meters. Because theL1/L2 aspects of Ethernet are closely coupled together, it is often notpossible with todays Ethernet equipment to isolate at which layer aproblem has occurred. This results in truck rolls to swap out equipment, cables, or interfaces, in an attempt to x the problem before actuallyknowing what/where it is. This dramatically increases operation costsand decreases the value proposition of Ethernet to service providers. The objective of VCD is to better manage and troubleshoot Ethernetcircuits between the carrier CPE and the customer premises, so calledthe last 100 m 100TX copper line.VCD offers a simple command through which we can remotelyanalyze the copper lines and get a clear status of the following possibleproblems:

    1. Report of cable shorts2. Cut on a cable and its location

    3. Impedance problems (connectors or bad quality cable)

The information achieved pinpoints exactly what cable undergoes aproblem (i.e. what port it originates from) and at what exact distancefrom the device the short, or the cut is located.

Optical Level Monitoring (Digital Diagnostics)The OptiSwitch9000 series supports the SFP Digital Diagnostics standard(as per SFF-8472) A powerful OPM tool, it provides access to a numberof real-time SFP operating parameters such as optical TX/RX power,

voltage and temperature, as well as component information such asvendor code, serial number and wavelength. The information providedby Digital Diagnostics, together with alarm and warning thresholds, enables a network administrator to identify potential problems in opticaltransmission and take preemptive action before any service outageactually occurs.
