Xtra Math is a great website for your child to practice their addition and subtraction fluency. Math fact fluency is the ability to recall the answers to basic math facts automatically. While we encourage students to know a variety of strategies to solve an addition or subtraction problem, the goal is for students to have their math facts to 20 memorized by the end of second grade. Being able to add and subtract numbers quickly will help them solve longer and more difficult problems faster. Now that we are starting to add 2 digit numbers, the students who know their math facts are finding it easier to solve these problems. We use Xtra Math approximate 4 days a week in class, but I encourage you to do it at home a few nights a week as well. If you need a reminder of your child’s username/password, please let me know. They brainstormed ideas with each other of things they would want on their island. They came up with some amazing ideas: candy stores, a variety of restaurants, Home Depot for kids, dinosaur gift shops, helicopter landing pads, private docks and so much more!! The students then got busy designing their individual island! They took time creating their map key and deciding where to place each location. If you would like to take a look at these islands, they are on the class website as an e-book! Come explore the different islands of room 80! www.vukmarkaj80.weebly.com Mrs. Vukmarkaj’s News

This week in writing our class sketched 3 things they enjoyed doing with their family. After brainstorming ideas, they choose one of their sketches to write about. After they finished their rough draft, they read it to a partner. Their partner asked them questions in order to find out more about the topic. The questions their partner had allowed them to go back and add a few more details to their story. The students then turned this rough draft into their final copy. The students work will then be made into an e-book you can read on our website! The students really enjoyed working in pairs and helping each other with adding more details to their writing!.
