The Hornet Spotlight shines on two exceptionally talented Hor-nets this week, McKenzie Smith and Austin Waters. McKenzie
Smith is a smart and hardworking freshman at PHS. She runs cross country where she runs in the 3 mile event. She also plays
basketball for the Lady Hornets. She is the
daughter of PCMS principal, Laron Smith, and Mrs. Willa Smith, who works in the PHS
front office. McKenzie works hard to main-
tain her AB average and does her best to succeed at everything she does. Austin
Waters, is another smart and hardworking
freshman at PHS. He is currently taking honor classes, where he also maintains an AB average. Austin is a member of the PHS
football team and an active member of FCA. He also participates in the PHS marching band where he plays trombone. According
to Mrs. Bulloch, these two are very hardworking Hornets who
strive to push themselves to be the best. Nothing is going to slow these two down!
Keep up the good work and congratula-
tions for being featured in the Hornet
Spotlight. - By Wakeelah McIntyre

On October 1, 2012 Mr.
Young held a pig show
meeting. If anyone is
interested in showing a
pig this year, please see
Mr. Young for more
details. On October 2,
2012 an FFA meeting
was held in the ag room.
The FFA board members had a Fear Factor
theme night, and Mr. Young provided the
members with hotdogs, hamburgers, and
drinks. The Poinsettia sale is going on right
now. If any FFA members would like to sell
poinsettias or if anyone wants to buy poin-
settias, see Mr. Young. Thursday through
Sunday the FFA goat show team will be in
Perry, GA for the State Lamb and Goat
Show. The members that will be showing
are Staci Clark, Brianna Holton, Tres Wil-
liams, Cameron Solomon, Shawnee Fenton,
and Jessica Yarley. Branson Beasley will be
showing his cows at the Georgia National
Fair Cattle Show in Perry, GA this weekend.
Also, on October 17, 2012 Mr. Young is
planning a trip to Expo. There is a $10 fee
to sign up, but he only has thirty slots and
after those thirty are filled, students’ names
will be put on a waiting list. You must be an
FFA member to go, and you must wear your
FFA shirt. If you would like to sign up,
please see Mr. Young. –By Delanie Aday

Last Friday’s Pep Rally was full of
excitement and enthusiasm for Friday
night’s game. There were various
activities going on, such as competi-
tions between each grade level to see
who could be the loudest. Of course,
the seniors won! Seniors participating
in fall sports and Senior Favorites were
also announced and by the end of the
pep rally, everyone was “all whammed
up.” Seeing the cheerleaders get pied
in the face just added more excitement
and had the students even more hyped
as they left PHS on Game Day Friday.

September Students of the Month
As the faithful Hornets worked
through their busy work day, they
were temporarily interrupted by a
power outage. The power outage
caused second and third lunches to
be delayed so the administration and
cafeteria staff could come up with a
plan to feed the hungry student
Hornets. The lunchroom staff along
with a very helpful administrator,
Mr. Williamson, worked together to
create enough peanut butter sand-
wiches for the students. As the
students in second lunch were en-
joying their lunches, the lights came
back on, and the Hornets were able
to continue their busy day in the
nest. –

Mrs. Prothro’s Early Childhood Develop-
ment class was assigned to write and
create a children’s story. On Thursday,
September 27, 2012, Mrs. Prothro’s
class went to visit the Pre-K students to
share their children’s story they had
written in the previous days. The elemen-
tary students were amazed at the fact that
they were being read stories by “the big
kids.” The PHS Hornets read so well that
they were even asked to come back. On
Friday, September 28th, 2012, the Early
Childhood Development class traveled to
the elementary school for the second
time. This time they spent time with the
kindergarten class. The kindergarteners
seemed more interactive with story time.
They are a little older so they understood
the story better. The two cheerleaders of
the group, Ann Atkins and Rebekah
Smith, taught Mrs. Slaughter’s class a
cheer. Mrs. Prothro’s class said that it
was great fun reading to the kindergarten
class because of the participation they
received back, but of course, they en-
joyed the Pre-K students, too. Thursday
and Friday several bright little faces were
lit up eagerly awaiting stories. – By
Yazmen McCaskill and Lexi Gilliard
Story Time with the Elementary School
During the week of September 24th –
October 1st Mrs. Prothro’s fourth block
class planned and threw parties that
contained nutritious menus and active
games for the guests to play. For each
party, the group members had to pick a
theme, make their own menu, and plan
the games that were to be played. Some
of the themes were Candy Land, Spider-
man, Angry Birds, Rainbows, and Mon-
keys. The whole purpose of throwing
these parties was so the students would
learn how to make a party be both nutri-
tious and actively healthy. Many children
in America are becoming obese and
overweight due to the fast food and un-
healthy food that they eat. –By Kelly

Cross Country
Hornet Football
The Pelham High School
Cross Country team is reach-
ing the peak of its season.
This past week the team had
two meets, one in Albany and
the other in Thomasville.
Both were difficult, and
challenged the Hornet run-
ners in different ways. The
Monroe Invitational in Alba-
ny, GA took place on Thurs-
day, September 27, 2012 at
5:30 in the afternoon. The
runners said the course was
fairly easy but was made
challenging by the hot sun
shining down on them as
they ran the 3.1 miles. The
Thomasville meet was not as
hot but was made hard by the
changing of surfaces, the
steep hills, and the never-
ending straightaways. The
Pelham Cross Country team
members tried their hardest
at both of those meets, and
two runners were recognized
for their outstanding perfor-
mances. Guthrie Edwards
placed 5th out of nearly 100
male runners, and Beth
Phillips placed 6th overall for
the girls at the Monroe Invi-
tational. Good job Hornets! -

Silent Cheerleader day was last
Friday. This meant the cheerlead-
ers of PHS had to remain quiet
for the entire day. If a cheerleader
talked, she would have to give her
spirit stick to the person that
made her talk. Students were not
allowed to touch them in any way.
During the pep rally, any person
that received a spirit stick had the
opportunity to hit the cheerleader
in the face with a pie. Rebekah
Smith was pied by Christian
Drake. Ann Atkins was pied by
Mr. White. Marissah Frost was
pied by Clifford Stewart. Ashley
Chason was pied by Beth Phillips.
Latressa Moore was pied by
Lorenzo Church. Shakina Hay-
ward was pied by Ausia Fleming.
Yazmen McCaskill was pied by
Emily Burgess. Hopefully, these
cheerleaders have learned that
when the coach says be silent she
means it. –By Sherry Lammons
Hush Little Cheerleader
On September 28, 2012 the mighty Pelham Hornets started their quest to make the
state play-off with their first region game at home against the Fitzgerald Hurri-
canes. The Hornet defense took the field first, and they did a fantastic job making
the Hurricanes punt the ball to the Hornet offense. The Hornet offense took the field
and moved the ball well but had to punt. On the punt a host of Hornets brought
down the Fitzgerald runner in the end zone causing a safety and giving the Hornets
a 2-0 lead. The Hornets got the ball back after the safety, and started driving the
ball very well. Brandon Smith broke out for a 66 yard run that was called back for a
penalty so the Hornets had to settle for a field goal furthering their lead 5-0 going
into the second quarter. On the ensuing possession the Hornet defense allowed a
score making the score 7-5 Fitzgerald. Later on in the first half the Hornets scored
on a pass from Clarence Almond to Clifford Stewart making the score 11-7. At the
end of the second quarter the Hornets seem to collapse giving up three touchdowns,
two on a goal line stance and another on an interception making the score at the
half 26-11. Coming out in the second half the Hornet offense started it off, and their
drive ended in a punt. This was the story of the second half for the Hornets. At the
end of the game the score was 40-11 giving the Hornets a 0-1 region record. This
week is an off week for the Hornets, and they will be preparing for their next region
game against Cook County. So come out and travel with the Hornets. Go Hornets! –
