Language Arts: Read and finished Obi:Gerbil on the loose, The Three Little Pigs, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, Cinderella, Seriously Cinderella Was So Annoying, Jack and the Beanstalk, Waynetta and the CornStalk, Rapunzel, Really Rapunzel Needed a Haircut, The Wall, and read from our fluency binders Our reading focused on comparing and contrasting two stories on the story elements using two different versions of fairy tales In writing this week, students were asked to write about someone they considered a hero. Students also wrote cards to Veterans. Wrote Friendly letters to our star student Blake Cursive letters: the lowercase i and t Phonics study this week was on making nouns possessive and adding an ’s. Math: Math words this week: perimeter, foot, ruler, yard, yardstick, unit, minuend The targets in math this week were: I can estimate and measure the distance around a square and rectangle in cm using a ruler I can estimate and measure the distance around a triangle in cm using a ruler I can estimate and measure objects in the classroom in cm and m as well as estimate and measure the height of myself and classmates Social studies: Read The First Thanksgiving and stopped throughout reading to discuss what life was like at that time for settlers coming to America and the Native Americans that were already living in America. This tied in to our unit on People Long ago and what we have been learning about colonists coming from England to America. Learned about the first Americans and the different Native American Indian tribes found in North America by reading, The Very First Americans. Looked more closely into the Mayflower ship and what it was actually like to travel on the Mayflower to America in 1620. A peek at the week Mark your Calendar Today we spent some time on Veteran’s Day activities. The day began with the staff and students of Lincoln saying the Pledge of Allegiance together in the hallway and listed to some of the students at Lincoln read a Veteran’s Day Poem. We also read The Wall as a class. Later in the day the kids took the time to write thoughtful cards to Veterans to show their appreciation towards them and thank them for all they do for us and our country. The cards and well wishes will be sent to Veterans. The rest of conferences were held this week. I enjoyed meeting with you Wednesday night to talk about your child and everything we are working on in second grade! A letter was sent home earlier in the week asking students to bring in a pair of sunglasses for their Holiday Program performance. If you send these in, I can safely keep track of them for when they need them to practice and to bring on the night of the program if you would like. We have wrapped up our first Trimester of second grade! Next Friday your child will be coming home with their report card. Please keep a look out for this to come home and return it back to me once you have reviewed it and signed it.
