Spotlight Happenings By: Reese Womack

In this article I will be talking about spotlight happenings ! We will start with 3rd grade spotlight. 3rd grade spotlight’s teacher is Mrs. Rainey Coffman . The 3rd grade is

talking about SPACE. They are doing stations to research and learn more about it. They are learning about genetics while creating an alien with using the Punnett

square. They are learning about different types of astronauts, applying for a job for that position, and researching about what they do. They are creating art and learning

about positive and negative “space” , and after all of their research they will make a Prezi where it can include facts, videos or even our drawings or videos that we

created. It takes a lot of work and effort to do these stations. The 4th grade teacher is Mrs. Angel Lashlee, 4th grade spotlight is talking about tessellations patterns that don’t overlap or have gaps. They are also going to Skype with Ric Gillespie, founder of

TIGHAR, the international group for historical aircraft discovery. He is currently looking for Amelia Earhart’s plane. For more information,

visit this website. https://tighar.org/ 5th grade spotlight’s teams of detectives are using their forensic science skills to determine if King Tutankhamun (aka King Tut) was murdered and how! Mrs. Ready

says: “Stay tuned to find out what these crime-solving detectives discover! “ Thanks to Mrs. Rainey, Mrs. Lashlee, and Mrs. Ready for showing affection to your students all year long! We love Lewisburg’s spotlight teachers and hope that stories of them get

The Baddour Center By: Maylee Samples

This month, the Ambassadors from LES are visiting the Baddour Center in Senatobia, MS. To find out more about the center, I interviewed via facetime with Mrs. Rainey’s husband, Mr. Cory Coffman, who is a Case Manager for the Baddour Center. I asked him what he does at the center and he said that he manages residents’ daily schedules, activities, finances, behavior, etc…He told me in our interview that The Baddour Center is a non-profit organization

that is a facility for adults with intellectual disabilities. The residents at The Baddour Center live on campus in a group home with other residents. They have jobs at the center, provided by such companies as FedEx. They have a garden center where they can work in the nursery or help with keeping the campus looking beautiful by being a grounds worker. Mr. Cory told me

that the purpose of the Baddour Center was to allow for the residents to be independent and to set goals for them to achieve their best. I asked him what the residents do at the Baddour Center. He said they have plenty of things to do at the center. They go to activities which include going to the movies, plays, shopping, out to eat, etc… In their free time, residents can participate in art, music or

dance classes, go to the gym or swimming area to work on their fitness goals, go to church in the Chapel on campus, participate in the Special Olympics in many different sports, perform in a play, or

even sing with the choir group at Baddour called The Miracles. The Miracles travel all over, singing to different churches and even at the White House. At Baddour, they have a homecoming game every

year where they have a big pep rally, a football game where they play against the staff members, cheerleaders, a dance team, a homecoming court where a queen is selected, and even have a

homecoming dance afterwards. I asked him how students can help at Baddour Center and if there are any events coming up that we can be involved. He said that there are several ways to give back to

Baddour. There are several fundraisers that you can be involved with throughout the year, including online donations. There is an annual fashion show, and even Dancing for Our Stars which was this

month. Mr. Uselton was one of the participants this year! He said students can volunteer to write to a resident or send care packages or supplies to them. You are welcome to help in any way! There is an annual event coming up that you are welcome to be a part of and it is called the Fishing Rodeo that will

be in April. For more information about The Baddour Center, visit their website at http://www.baddour.org/ or even check them out on Facebook! Thank you to Mr. Cory Coffman for

taking the time to answer my questions about the Baddour Center! We look forward to our visit later this month!

The Knowledge Bowl By: Claire Taylor

Are you good at trivia? If so, there is a program called the Knowledge Bowl that includes four teams of five, two from each 4th and 5th grade Spotlight students. Spotlight students, I highly

recommend you trying out next year! This year, there have already been tryouts. Students trying out answer trivia questions and then the people with the most points

are on the team. In tryouts, It is good to always answer a question, even if you aren't positive whether it is the correct answer or not. In the actual Knowledge Bowl, there are buzzers. If someone on

your team probably knows the answer, let them answer. If nobody does, just go for it!

The Knowledge Bowl is a fun event that tests your knowledge and may even help you find that you're actually a lot better at trivia

then you thought! Also, you get a day off from school. Win-Win!! Fourth grade knowledge bowl will be on April 3rd, while 5th grade

knowledge bowl will be held on April 4th.

February - Black History Month By: Kylee Garcia

The month of February was Black History Month. Have you ever heard of Jackie Robinson or Harriet Tubman or

maybe Martin Luther King, Jr.? If you didn’t know, these are all famous African Americans. They are famous for standing up for

what they believe, like Rosa Parks, who did not give up her seat for a white man. Back then, black people who rode on the bus, had to

get up if a white person wanted their spot. Thanks to these wonderful African Americans who stood up for what is right, we do

not have to fight for bus seats, drink from different fountains, or any other crazy thing like that.

On February 8th, 2017 Miss Mississippi came to Lewisburg Elementary. Her name is Laura Lee Lewis, and she was Miss

remover, insect killer spray, acetic acid, ammonia, benzene, butane, cadmium, carbon monoxide, and so much more are in cigarettes. Before she started talking she got a bag and pulled out just a few things that are in cigarettes. The presentation was about 20-30

minutes long. When it was over, we asked a few questions and took lots of pictures with her. She even went to each classroom

separately to take photos with each class! Thank you Miss Mississippi for coming to our school!
