Rules and Procedures/ Vocab./ Piano & Guitar Unit: Rules and Procedures, Intro to piano basic chord structures and scale formations using piano lab supplied by Mr. Tuttle (whole and half steps). Meter Review with Mixed Meter, South American Music, Sharps and Flats, dotted rhythms, swing meter, comparing and contrasting jazz and blues to modern day music. Guitar chords blues E7 and A7 as well as all string names with proper tuning and hand formations. Impressionism. Music exams; pre-test based on numbers enrolled in each grade level. (Solfege in chorus with hand signals do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do). Major and minor tonality (chorus). Chorus for entire grade- Reading various musical scores starts and continues throughout the year.

November/ December

Group Singing/Musicals & Dramas/"Bugs" Common Core Unit (Insects): Review proper singing techniques and partner singing. Work on common core curriculum based on play performance (MJT play topic specified at beginning of the year). Bugz Holiday- research different bugs and cultures. Ballet Nutcracker dances.

Notes and Performance/ "Bugs" Common Core Unit (Insects): Melodic Dictation, canons, staff review, measures/ meter, playing phrases on recorder, breathing technique on recorders, posture. Work on common core curriculum based on play performance (MJT play topic specified at beginning of the year). Bugz Holiday- research different bugs and cultures. Nutcracker Dancing

Guitar/ Piano/ Ear Training Unit: Ear training with melodies, dynamics, harmony, partner songs, canons, holiday songs. Intro to basic guitar and piano parts/notes and strumming patterns (using proper hand positions on specific frets and piano keys). Solfege in chorus using proper hand signals for do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do).

Listening/ Scales/ Early Music Culture Unit: Major and Minor Melodies. North American Music, syncopations, piano pentatonic scale, review walking strum patterns on guitar, proper fingers on frets for D, G, A, and C chords. Chord, string/frets, and piano key note charts/ handouts are used to learn all chords and notes on the guitar and piano. Review String names for all 6 strings on the guitar. Compare other stringed instruments such as banjo, violin, and bass, and understand number of strings with their tunings. Using melodies identify the use of themes comparing and contrasting Romantic and Renaissance. Harmonies 3-4 parts. All-County auditions.

January/ February

Reading (ELA)/ Dance Unit: Reading ABA, AABA, ABC form. Tone color, woodwinds and Brass instrument families. Dancing to Just Dance using different styles of music. Marching to steady beats, partner dancing, Irish gigs, 50's- present day dances create dance moves to specific genres (examples include: country, classical, rock, swing, big band, jazz, hip-hop, modern). Following along with popular children's songs and poems- continuation (lyrics). Start Folk Dances. Reading new chorus scores for spring concerts (exams on reading music).

Reading/ Recorder/Dance Unit: Reading ABA, AABA, ABC form. Tone color, woodwinds and Brass instrument families continuation. Dancing to Just Dance using different styles of music. Start playing recorders. Recorder Notes B,A,G,C, and D- reading simple melodies and using correct phrasing and fingers to cover specific recorder holes. Use music connection books grade 3 for basic music concepts for common core- Charlotte's Web use of common instrumentation. Around the World Boom whacker recognition using simple/ complex rhythms. Review Folk Dances.

Rhythm Unit: Rhythms in 2/4, 3/4/, 4/4 with 16th notes, 8th notes, quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes- using proper counting such as 1 2 3+ 4e+a for example. Half note, whole note, whole rests, half rests, quarter rests, and eighth rest recognition using basic meter.

Song Writing / Continuation of Early Music Culture Unit: Creating Songs using ABA or AABA form. Songs will need to follow basic rules found in specific song writing rubric. Songs follow melodic, rhythmic, and overall musicality rules. Songs created are based on Common Core curriculum in the classroom based on History or Science related topics as well as the use of modern technology. Classical music compared to modern day music. Waltz, baroque dances, sonata form. Group work divided up into 5-8 groups for 4-6 weeks. 6th grade singing at Phantoms Games "Star Spangled Banner" after audition. Reading new chorus scores for spring concerts (exams on reading music).

Listening/ Notes/ Rhythm Unit: Peter and the Wolf instrument families specific to characters. Identifying sounds to instruments. Carnival of the Animals. Tone colors, textures, listening to different ensembles, solos, tutti, ostinato, Treble clef notes FACE in the Space EGBDF on the lines. Rhythm reading using quarter notes, half notes, eighth notes and rests in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4/ time. Note compositions (Treble Clef)

Music History/ Notes/ Rhythm Unit: Follow the Drinking Gourd. Common core curriculum- constellations, directions, compass use, slavery, late 1800's- early 1900's- 1940's. Use of spirituals, other means of communication to create freedom. Textures of music knowledge of all notes on the recorder and rhythms learned previously. Little Richard, keyboard instruments. Recorder hot air competitions and note compositions.

Dance Unit: Dancing to Just Dance using different styles of music. Tone color/ texture, large and small ensembles, spirituals, dotted notes, meter review, moving to music based on meter and style such as swing, waltz, and common time. Rock Band formation techniques. Bass Clef Notes. Verses and Refrains that compare early to modern poems and songs.

Tone color/ texture, large and small ensembles, spirituals, dotted notes, meter review, moving to music based on meter and style such as swing, waltz, and common time. Singing rap (singing verses speaking lyrics) Rock Band formation techniques. Bass and Treble Clef Notes Review. Use of Rhythms in 2/4, 3/4/, 4/4 with 16th notes, 8th notes, quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes- using proper counting. Identify 32nd, and 64th notes using bridges (common core Math). Moving up song for 6th grade is started. Reading musical scores continued until the end of the year.

Improvisation/ Musicals Continued/ Review all previous units: Improvisation and reading lyrics with notes to patriotic and other cultural songs. Melodies moving up, down, or staying the same. Review tone colors and forms. Review previous musical concepts including terminology, notes, rhythms, history, and overall musicality. Musical plates moving to different music tempos and styles. Bach and Beethoven. All K-2nd grade will take a post- music test to test skills learned throughout the year (based on number of students in each grade level). Groovy Jungle technology continuation. Watch parts and review Musicals such as "The Sound of Music, "The Wizard of Oz", and Peter Pan.

Performance/ Patriotic/ Review all previous units: Performance etiquette and review for upcoming shows. Flag Day patriotic music review. Improvising, soloists and duet performing. Review previous musical concepts including terminology, notes, rhythms, history, and overall musicality. Music connection for grade 3 to review common core concepts. Musical plates moving to different music tempos and styles. All 3rd grade will take a post- music test to test skills learned throughout the year (based on number of students in each grade level). Common Core- Preamble to the Constitution.

Performance/ Patriotic/ Technology/ Review all previous units: Comprehensive review, expressive elements for performing including projecting voices with annunciating. Review Scales (solfege 1-8 scale degrees do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do) Textures, composition reading using music connection books for grade 4. Ballads. Musical plates moving to different music tempos and styles. All 4th grade will take a post- music test to test skills learned throughout the year (based on number of students in each grade level). Review Patriotic music and music from the early 50's to present day. Intro to music recording technology using garage band on MAC to record loops and simple tracks (Mr. Tuttle will supply his technology for use in his classroom for this unit).
