    Budget Thankyoutothemanyofyouwhohaverespondedtomyrequesttocontactourarealegislatorstourgethemnotto

    supportGovernorLePagesproposedbudget.AsIhavementionedinthepasttwoissuesofthisupdate,theproposedbudget

    wouldresultina1milliondollarlossinstatesubsidytoourschoolsaswellasanaddedexpenseofabout$300,000tocoverpart

    ofthe

    states

    share

    of

    the

    teacher

    retirement

    system.

    K8RestructuringUpdateTheK8administratorsarefinalizingtheplansfortherestructuringofgradesK8asaresultofthe

    SchoolCommitteesdecisiontoclosetheEmersonSchoolattheendofthisschoolyear.Emersonstudents,teachersandstaff

    willbemovingtotheWillardSchool.Roomassignmentsarebeingcompletedwithallofthegrades13studentsbeinghoused

    onthemainfloor(BFloor)oftheWillardSchool.Thisyearsgrade5studentsatWillardwillbemovingtoSanfordJuniorHigh

    Schoolnextyearaswebegintheprocessofcreatingagrade68middleschool.Wehopetomoveallgrade6students(fromCJL

    tothejuniorhighschoolinthenextcoupleofyears.TwokindergartenclasseswillalsobeestablishedattheLafayetteSchoolto

    reducethenumberofschooltransitionsforLafayettestudents.AspartoftherestructuringtheWillardSchoolwillnowbeon

    thesamedailyscheduleasMargaretChaseSmith,CarlJ.LambandLafayetteSchools.

    Thelogisticsofmovingclassroomequipmentsandsuppliesarestillbeingworkedoutastherearesomeminormodifications

    thatneedtobemadetosomeoftherooms.Themaintenancestaffhopestohaveanyneededmodificationsdoneinearly

    summertoallowtheroomstobecleanedandsetupbythefirstofAugust.

    SHSSRTCConstructionLanceWhiteheadfromourarchitecturalfirmLavalleeBrensingerwillbemakingapresentationtothe

    CityCouncilthisTuesday,April2nd

    at7:00PMoutliningtheprojecttimelineforthenext12months.Themeetingwillbe

    televisedonWSSRTVchannel26.LancewillalsobeprovidingbackgroundaboutLavalleeBrensingerandexplainingthe

    differentopportunitiesforpublicinputonthedesignofthenewfacility.

    March22. Thepresentationcalled"BetterTogether:CommunityDrivenSchoolChange"receivedhighratingsfromattendeesfrom

    aroundNewEngland. EverySanfordattendeewenttofoursessionstolearnaboutinnovativehighschoolpracticestakingplaceinNH,

    VT,RI,ME,andCT. Theirreflectionsonthosesessionsarebeingmadeintoapowerpointtosharewithothers. Welearnedaboutmany

    valuableresourcesinthosesessions.

    ThereareYouTubevideosavailableofRickWormeli,authorof"FairIsn'tAlwaysEqual.". Thereareseveralinwhichhespeaksabout(1)Standardsbasedreporting;(2)Redos,Retakes,andDoOvers,PartI;(3)Redos,Retakes,andDoOvers,PartII;(4)Howmuchshould

    homeworkcount?;(5)Onlatework;(6)FormativeandSummativeAssessment;(7)DefiningMastery;and(8)Gradebooks. Inaddition,

    thereisoneofEffectiveGradingbyKenO'Connor,authorof"HowtoGradeforLearning." Hespeaksabouthowgradesmustbe

    consistent,accurate,meaningful,andsupportiveoflearning. AswemovetowardtheVision,ourthinkingaboutgradingandreporting

    willbechallengedbyexpertslikeWormeliandO'Connor. Irecommendthesevideostoanyonewhoiscuriousabouthowwhatwe're

    doingcurrentlycomparestostandardsbasedreporting.

    SummerInstructionalDesignandDelivery(IDD)professionaldevelopmentbytheReinventingSchoolsCoalitionwilltakeplaceonAugust5,6,7,and8. Thisisafourdaytraining. Someteachershavealreadyhadthefirsttwodays(ID). Manyteacherswillhavetotakeall

    four. Itisimportantthatwehavethenumbersofthosewhointendtoparticipateineitherthetwodayorthefourdaytrainingbefore

    SJHS YMCA ConnectionSubmittedbyJessAllenStudentsinKathyCamiresandJessicaAllensspecialeducation

    classesatthejuniorhighrecentlyparticipatedinaneightweek

    sessionofswimmingattheYMCA. Ithasbeenagreatopportunity

    forthestudentstoworkonfunctionallifeskillgoalsinan

    authenticenvironment. Thestudentslookforwardtotheweekly

    swimtime. TheswimmingsessionswereprovidedbyJeffPellerin,

    aquaticdirectorattheYMCAatnocharge. KathyandJesssenda

    bigthankyoutoNateMann,BeckyTurgeonandDanSpencerfor

    helpingto

    organize

    the

    program.

    The

    students

    recently

    thanked

    Jeffandthelifeguard,SarahbybringingbakedtreatstotheYMCA.

    New Community Arts Center Opens at SCAE Submitted by SRTC Asst. DirectorTheresa Nelson

    SCAEis

    proud

    to

    introduce

    its

    new

    community

    Art

    Center.

    A

    key

    elementofthecenterwillbepotteryandceramicprogramming.Six

    weeksessionswillbeofferedtoadults,seniors,andchildren.For

    communityconvenience,SCAEwillbeofferingSaturdayclasses.In

    addition,individualsessionswillalsobeavailableforpartiesand

    specialeventssuchasarttherapy. ThisnewventuresupportsSCAE's

    goalofcontinuingtoprovidehighquality,diverse,andcreative

    classesandprogramstotheSanfordcommunity.

    activitiesinvolvedusingthenewArtCenter.Wehadourteachersall

    makeuglymugs.Theprocesstakesacoupleweekstogofroma

    lump

    of

    clay

    to

    being

    fired

    and

    glazed.

    The

    staff

    had

    a

    blast

    in

    a

    two

    hour

    session

    which

    took

    manyoutoftheircomfortzone. Itgaveusallafreshperspectiveonhowsomeofour

    studentsfeelintheclassroom.

    . Each

    participantintheprogramwasabletomakeatoothbrushholderorvase. Itwassucha

    greatopportunityforthemtotapintotheircreativesideandspendtimedoing

    somethingfun.DeniseBouchardwasourfirstcommunitymembertobooktimeonthe

    Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Teams with SJHS Grade 8 Students to Build SeaPerch

    SpecialThankstoEdCormierfromthePortsmouthNavalShipyardwhospearheadedthisuniqueopportunityforourSanfordJuniorHighstudentstoworkwithrepresentativesfromthePortsmouthNavalShipyard(PNSY).

    SeaPerchisaninnovativeunderwater

    roboticsprogramthatequipsteachers

    andstudentswiththeresourcesthey

    needtobuildanunderwater

    RemotelyOperatedVehicle(ROV).

    Studentsbuild

    the

    ROV

    from

    akit

    comprisedoflowcost,easily

    accessibleparts,followinga

    curriculumthatteachesbasic

    engineeringandscienceconceptswith

    amarineengineeringtheme.The

    SeaPerchProgramprovidesstudents

    withtheopportunitytolearnabout

    robotics,engineering,science,and

    mathematics(STEM)whilebuildingan

    underwaterROVaspartofascience

    andengineeringtechnology

    curriculum.Throughouttheproject,

    studentswill

    learn

    engineering

    concepts,problemsolving,teamwork,

    andtechnicalapplications.

    ThefollowingwassubmittedbyEdCormier

    TheSeaPerchwerebuiltover4daysandthenwerefieldtestedattheYMCApool. Thestudentsdoalltheworkfrompipecutting,measuring,switchwiringandsoldering. PNSYprovidesmentoringandtroubleshootingassistance. Thestudentsgetalessoninbuoyancyandthenneedto"FLINK"theirSeaPerch. ThatistosaytheunitcannotFLOATonthesurfaceorSINKtothebottom,theyneedtobesomewhereinthemiddle.ThecrewfromtheUSSMiamiwerealsotheretohelpwithmentoringthestudentsandprovidedtheirtechnicalexpertisewithsoldering

    electrical

    connections

    and

    basic

    submarine

    construction.

    They

    also

    provided

    encouragement

    when

    the

    students

    were

    gettingfrustratedandhelpedthemtroubleshootanyproblemsthatarose. AdditionallytheywereabletoputafaceandanametotheheroestheyseeonthenewsandaddsometangiblemeaningtothePledgeofAllegiancethattheysayeverymorning.EverymorningwhenIarrivedthefirstthingthestudentswantedtoknowwasiftheSailorswouldbebackagaintoday.Atthepoolstudentshadthreestationssetuparoundthepool. Station1)ObjectRecovery;Station2)SalvageDive;Station3) CaptheWell. TheseareallrealworldapplicationswhereROV'shavebeenusedthatthestudentscanrelateto.IgrewupinSanfordandwenttoMargaretChaseSmithelementaryschoolandCarlJLambmiddleschool. Thebestpartaboutthisprojectwasbeingabletogivebacktomycommunity. IseesomuchpotentialinSanford.Thestudentsthatweareworkingwithtodaywillbetomorrowsleaders. Seeingtheseteensputtheirphonesandmp3playersdownandgetengagedinprojectwasamazing.EdalsostatedthathehasworkedattheShipyardfor5yearsandisoneoftheOutreachColeadsattheyard.Edaddsthatthe
