AN AUGUST LETTER FROM TONY KING

Dear Friends,

Still fresh in my memory is our four-week, very wet, tour of Scotland. I don’t intend to write much about the trip here, as we plan to do a ‘Moorlands, Highlands and Islands’ presentation in the Parish Centre in Dursley later this year.

But one of the highlights of the trip was the day we went to Iona – which, coincidently, was one of the best mornings – dry, sunny and warm.

Some years ago our then-curate Rowena gave an account of her time on Iona. It was partly this that triggered our plan to visit the Isle of Mull and cross the Sound of Iona to the island. The ferry was larger than I imagined it would be – but it carries vehicles to and from the island as well, and it was busy with foot passengers even in an early and wet June. Some had cases and bags, clearly visitors intending to stay on the island – true pilgrims perhaps?

The island itself has a strange property – I was going to say magical, but perhaps mystical might be better. The ruins of the 13th century Nunnery are the first religious buildings to be encountered, followed by a 15th century High Cross (one of the few remaining on the island), the Reilig Oran which is the graveyard with its 12th century chapel, and finally the Abbey itself, most of which is 15th century.

Overall there is a sense of peace and calm – despite the hotels, B and Bs, cafes and shops meeting the practical needs of the visitors.

Very little remains of the original monastery founded by St Columba in 563AD. There is a mound to the front of the Abbey and tradition suggests that the saint’s hut stood on this hillock, where he worked and prayed and slept, allegedly on a stone pillow.

But there is one tangible reminder of the monastery – the Book of Kells, also known as the Gospel Book of St Columba, though it was created some 200 years after his death. There is good evidence that the Book, currently held in Dublin, was written/drawn/illuminated by a small team of highly skilled monks working in the scriptorium on the island, and was sent to the monastery at Kells in Ireland to protect it from the Viking marauders in the 10th century.

Page 4: Mr J Wood 860236 and St Giles Room to Marion Kee 860364 or · and subsequently bought me a magnificent folio book about the Book of Kells – now a prized possession. I know that

My interest in this Book goes back to a Christmas Office Party outing to Dublin many years ago. My colleagues knew of my interest and subsequently bought me a magnificent folio book about the Book of Kells – now a prized possession.

I know that the name of St Bartholomew must be in the Kells Gospels, since he is referred to in the three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke), but a web search failed to find the appropriate pages. All the references to him in these Gospels, and in Acts, simply list him as one of the Twelve Apostles.

This month, of course, we celebrate the Feast of St Bartholomew in the church at Nympsfield on Sunday 25th August at 10am.

As with most of the apostles, we know very little about his life in the early Church. There are two traditional legends – that he went as a missionary to India and/or to Armenia. I suppose he could perhaps have done both. He apparently worked in Armenia with his fellow apostle Jude, and both are considered to be the patron saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Legend also has it that he was martyred in Armenia, being flayed alive and beheaded and his emblem is a flaying knife. Current scholarship seems to indicate that he actually died in India.

He is credited with many miracles associated with weights. A solid silver statue from the Cathedral of St Bartholomew on the Sicilian island of Lipari was processed annually through the town. On one occasion it became so heavy that the bearers had to put it down and rest. This happened three times and as they tried to lift it the third time walls further down the road collapsed. Had the procession continued normally the townspeople would have died under the walls.

Like St Bartholomew and the monks of Iona may we seek to spread the Good News to others.

Tony King, Reader, Ewelme Benefice

P.S.-We left the island at 2pm – by 2.30 it was raining again!

WI DIARY JULY The Quiz Night at The Gliding Club, earlier this month, was a great success with 34 ladies turning up to go into combat. The seven teams tackled two rounds of questions, a music round and an anagram sheet of cities and towns. It was a fun evening with lots of friendly banter. To the strains of Barry Manilow’s ‘Bermuda Triangle’ we welcomed our speaker last month, Dr. Nicholas Henderson, who enraptured us with his talk ‘Great Mystery and Conspiracy Theories’. He offered logical explanations concerning the mysteries surrounding the Bermuda Triangle where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Disappearances have, in the past, been attributed to paranormal activities or by extra-terrestrial beings but Dr. Henderson suggested that jelly holes and electronic fog were more likely to have been the cause of those tragedies. The heavens opened during our trip to Daglingworth House but that didn’t deter the ladies who attended this amazing trip around David and Etta Howard’s ‘Rooms within a Garden’. Boxing hares, stunning views of meadows, a beautifully woven metal spiders' web (complete with spiders) and a stairway to heaven were just some of the delights to be seen. Every turn presented a different aspect and the rain only added to the beauty of the vistas. ‘When the weather is fine it's time to go down to the river’ - or canal maybe. This is just what some of us are going to do later this month when we charter the Cotswold Canals Trust narrowboat ‘Endeavour’ for a trip on the Gloucester to Sharpness Canal. Armed with picnics and sun hats we will go to enjoy, what is sure to be, a leisurely trip. So:- ‘If you take my advice There is nothing so nice As messing about On the river.’ Belinda Williams

ULEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Volunteers Needed! Uley Parish Council are Associate Members of the Stroud District Road Safety Group (SDRSG). We have paid a financial contribution towards two mobile VAS systems which we will be able to use to monitor speeding in Uley. SDRSG are currently looking for volunteers to be trained on the use of the VAS systems in order to implement them in the field and to collate the acquired data. They are also looking for volunteers to review the data from the proposed sites and progress the project. If you are interest please contact the groups Chairman, Iain Dunbar. His email address is [email protected] Careline The Parish Council would like to make residents aware of a great service provided by Stroud District Council. Careline is an effective way of getting help through your landline telephone line quickly and efficiently 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A small personal radio transmitter is worn as a pendant around the neck or on a wrist-strap. By pressing the pendant a signal is sent to the Careline, which will then dial automatically to the Control Room. The Control Room will quickly establish what assistance you require i.e. an Ambulance, Doctor, or perhaps one of your nominated contacts (neighbour, friend or a family member who ideally holds a key to your property). If you would like more details, please call them on 01453 754149 or email them at [email protected] Uley Bury As you may be aware there are currently cows on Uley Bury. We would like to kindly remind residents to not leave gates open. The cows are excluded from the West End of the Bury and this is important for the habitat. A notice will be put on the particular gate to remind residents of this.

CHURCH NEWS

Holiday Club Celebration Service

To celebrate all the fun of the Holiday Club week, there will be an informal service in St Giles at 4pm on Sunday 4th August which will finish with a tea party. All are very welcome to attend – whether or not you attended the Holiday Club! The morning service of Holy Communion at 10am is in St Bartholomew’s. Come to Messy Church – an exciting new venture!

Messy Church will be coming to St Giles on Saturday 19th October from 10.30am to 1200 noon. What is Messy Church?

It is a form of church for children and adults that includes creativity – making and doing things – celebration and hospitality – there will be home-made cake, coffee and soft drinks!

It’s for adults and children together; there will be some games, some craft activities (some a bit messy!) and a short celebration time with a Bible story, song and prayer.

Messy Church is fun! We hope this will be the start of a regular Messy Church in St Giles and we look forward to welcoming you to share this exciting time with us.

And did we mention the home-made cake and coffee? More details will be available in the next edition of the Village News but if you’d like some more information about what Messy Church is, take a look at the Messy Church website:

Rednock School Swing Band

The very popular and talented Swing Band from Rednock School will be performing in St Giles on Saturday 21st September. The time of the concert is still to be confirmed but will probably be 7 or 7.30pm. Watch out for more details nearer the time, but put this date in your diary. Not to be missed!

Holy Cross organ We are delighted to announce that the work on the organ has been completed and that it is sounding really good. The whole instrument was completely dismantled, parts of it restored or renewed and then rebuilt. The restoration took longer than expected, partly because the sound box, right at the heart of the instrument was in a much poorer state than was anticipated and had to be sent away for repair. The organ was heard at a service for the first time on 6th July when it was used for a wedding and we are now making plans for some sort of celebration when the restored organ can be re-dedicated. On Sunday 15th September there will be a service of sung Holy Communion for the whole parish in Holy Cross at 10am. This is to celebrate Holy Cross day, which is on the 14th, and is the Patronal Festival of the church in Owlpen. All are very welcome to attend this service and to hear the restored organ being played. We also continue the pattern of a monthly service of Choral Evensong, using the Book of Common Prayer, in Holy Cross at 6pm on the 2nd Sunday of the month.

FOOD AND DRINK Summer Apple Pie What you need 225g plain flour 140g butter/ margarine 3 large cooking apples 2 tbsp honey pinch of cinnamon pinch of mixed spice 1 egg, beaten

Method Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large mixing bowl and add the butter or margarine. Using your fingers, mix together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add about 3 tbsp cold water – 1 tbsp at a time – to bind the mixture into a ball. Then wrap it in cling film and leave to chill in the fridge while you prepare the apples, or for 30 mins if you have time. While the pastry is chilling, core the apples, and then cut into even-sized chunks so they all cook in the same amount of time. Put the apples into the pie dish, drizzle over the honey and add the cinnamon, mixed spice and about 2 tbsp water. Roll out the pastry on a floured work surface until it is large enough to cover the pie dish. Using the rolling pin, carefully lift the pastry and lay it over the top of the apple mixture. Carefully trim off the excess pastry (this can be rerolled and cut into shapes to decorate the pie crust if you like) and press the pastry edges onto the dish to create a seal. Make a small cut in the pastry so that the air can escape during cooking, then brush with beaten egg to glaze. Bake the pie in the oven for 20-30 mins until the pastry is golden and sandy in appearance and the apple filling is bubbling and hot. Serve hot or cold.
