Clouds• Formed when moist air is cooled
enough to allow saturation & condensation to take place.
• Saturation: air is completely filled with water vapor
• Condensation: phase change from gas to liquid
![Page 4: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Clouds cont.
• Different types form based on:• Amount of moisture in the air• Vertical air temperature through troposphere• Character of rising air (speed & location)• Approaching weather systems
• Identified by:• Shape• Height• Composition• Character (puffy vs. layered)
![Page 5: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Classification—Type #1• Cirrus —feathery, wispy, thin
![Page 6: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Classification—Type #2
• Cumuliform —puffy, round, pretty
![Page 7: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Classification—Type #3
• Stratiform —layered, sheet-like, strata=layers (like
rocks)
![Page 8: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Classification—Type #4
• Nimbus —produces precipitation
![Page 9: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Heights (HIGH): CIRRUS (Ci)
• Cirrus — made of ice crystals
• Align with upper level winds
• Indicate fair weather conditions
Aka: Mare’s Tails (look like horse’s tails)
![Page 10: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Heights (HIGH): Cirrocumulus (Cc)
• Cirrocumulus — ice crystals
• Occur in moist & unstable air (aloft)
• Appear with precip.-causing weather (warm fronts)Aka: “Mackerel sky, not three days dry”
![Page 11: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Heights (HIGH): Cirrostratus (Cs)
• Cirrostratus — ice crystals
• Common in winter with precip.-causing weather
• Produce sun dogs & halos
![Page 12: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Sun Dog Halos
![Page 13: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Heights (Middle) : Altocumulus (Ac)
• Occur in moist air that is lifting
• Fist-thumb-pinkeytip rule
• Altocumulus = thumb size
• Signals approaching storm system
![Page 14: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Heights (Middle) : Altostratus (As)
• Layered; liquid water
• Gray to pale blue
• Occurs where moist air is rising slowly
• Just ahead of rainy weather
![Page 15: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Heights (Low) : Cumulus (Cu)
• Puffy, white, pretty
• Indicates fair weather
• Well-defined bases
• Caused by humid air rising in bubbles
![Page 16: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Heights (Low) : Cumulus Congestus
• Aka: towering cumulus
• Atmosphere is very unstable
• Indicates stormy conditions later in the day
![Page 17: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Heights (Low) : Status (St)
• Sheet cloud; layers
• Hovers just above the ground (was fog?)
• No precip., but may be misty
![Page 18: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Precipitating Clouds: Nimbostratus (Ns)
• Same as stratus, just precipitating
• Precedes warmth (occur before warm fronts)
![Page 19: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Precipitating Clouds: Cumulonimbus (Cb)
• Thunderstorm!• Can poke into
stratosphere• Associated
with severe weather
• Anvil shape tops with mammatus clouds
![Page 20: Mr. Hartwell -- F-M Meteorology Cloud Types & Properties.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c01b1a28abf838ccf4a9/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
