What we need to know about wood

Wood comes in a number of varying sizes, the sizes have been standardized for over 100 years using the imperial measurement system.

The imperial measurement system is feet and inches of which most of you are familiar with.  But in Canada we use the metric system for measurement and the standard unit for construction is the millimeter (mm).

 Two of the most common types of lumber are two by (2X) lumber and one by (1X) lumber.  The common names are as follows:

In our shop we only use one and size of lumber and that is the one by six (1 X 6)It has the metric dimensions of 20 mm X 150 mm
