Bearings and Expansion Joints in Structural
MPA Universit Stuttgart is equipped with an ex-cellent calibration laboratory which is accredited bythe Deutschen Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH(DAkkS). With more than 45,000 calibration certifi-cates under the accreditation the MPA UniversitStuttgart has a lot of experience. The unit Bearingand Expansion Joints in Structural Engineering is anofficially approved as well as notified inspection andcertification body with testing, third party surveil-lance and certification (PÜZ) of bridge bearings, ex-pansions joints and anti-seismic devices. The unitPassive Safety is designated as technical service cat-egory A and D by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA)and as a technical service for the Vehicle Safety Cer-tification Center (VSCC) in Taiwan for Safety-belts /restraint systems.

Additionally the corrosion behavior of materials in dif-ferent media, temperatures and pressure is exami-ned, optionally components can be subjected to me-chanical loads. Particular testing competences arethe testing in compressed gaseous hydrogen and incryogenic hydrogen.
Operational Behavior under Medium Influence
This department works to determine the behavior ofmaterials and components. To achieve this, defor-mation, crack initiation, crack propagation and failureof materials are performed with regard to deformati-on, crack initiation, crack propagation and failure.
Corrosion Influence of Hydrogen and Oxygen
 Fatigue and High-Pressure Testing
These investigations are performed under static orcyclic load, at temperatures in the range of 4 K up tothe creep range.
The department is mainly concerned with computa-tional stress and fatigue analyzes as well as safetyanalyzes and aging management. The applicationcovers components, structures and systems of po-wer plants, general mechanical engineering, trans-port technology and aerospace.
The available calculation methods and models arecapable to evaluate the whole life cycle of a compo-nent, structure or system, starting with the manufac-turing process, including the evolution of damagesand the various stages of failure. In addition, calcula-tions and certificates are provided on the basis of rele-vant codes and standards.

The behavior of components under service loadingand the lifetime of components as well as plants aredetermined by material's properties and often by thetype and size of possible defects.
 Non-Destructive Testing
 Electron Microscopy and Metallography
The visualization and characterization of microstructure at different length scales and the non-destructive material testing are important tools whenstudying the material behavior under realistic loadingas well as for the analysis of damage and failuremechanisms in technical materials. For this purpose, equipment which allows studying and characterizingmaterials up to nanoscale range is available the de-partment.

In general, time-dependent inelastic deformationplays a key role in the high temperature . Themain task of the Material Law and Microstructure Cal-culation Unit is to describe the processes and mech-anisms during loading and to analyse them on differ-ent scales.

 High Speed Loading
The Unit of High-Speed Loading applies loadingrates up to 20m/s as well as impact loads on simplespecimens and on components and structures. Theanalysis of the material and component behaviour atthose loading rates is essential for safety analysisand also the simulation of manufacturing processes.

The department Joining Technology andAdditive Ma-nufacturing consisting of both joining technologiesand additive manufacturing as a system of processtechnology, material condition and the resultingstrength properties. The influence of process para-meters on emerging microstructure, formation of geo-metry and finally the mechanical properties is investi-gated in experimental studies and numerical processsimulations. A well-equipped laboratory is availablefor experimental studies of manufacturing and pro-cessing problems. Besides experimental investiga-tions of process limits and determination of stable pa-rameters for existing joining processes, we developnew and derived processes; especially for joining ofdifferent materials.

Plant Assessment and Operational Concepts
 Plant Life Assessment
The life cycle of more complex plants in the chemicalIndustry and for energy supply is mostly dependentof material and component behavior. The depart-ment´s work is focused on lifetime analyses forplants aimed to optimise operational strategies andmaintenance. Beside lifetime analyses using con-ventional and advanced methods, maintenance andinspection schemes such as risk based maintenan-ce and inspection are part of the research and deve-lopment and definition, implementation and evaluati-on of measures to ensure quality during manufactu-ring as well as operation of plants. The department´sservices are completed by root cause analyses for abroad range of component failures and damage. Theanalyses of our specialists are based on analyticaland numerical calculations and numerous methodsfor material investigations available at MPA.
