TIPS FOR A smooth move

4-8 WEEKS BEFORE MOVEGet estimates from moving companies and/or truck rentalsDraw up a floor plan of your new home to help decide which furniture will stay and which will goDiscuss costs, insurance, packing, loading, deliver, and claims procedure with your moverTake an inventory of all your possessionsDetermine what can be sold or donated for a charitable tax deductionIf moving to a new city, get copies of your records from doctors, dentists, lawyers, accountants, vets, etc.

4 WEEKS BEFOREIf necessary, arrange for temporary storage of your belongingsClean or repair any furniture, curtains, or carpets that need itHold a garage sale. Use the extra cash to splurge a little on your new home

3 WEEKS BEFOREStart collecting packing materials (furniture pads, hand truck, tape, bubble wrap, markers, boxes)Start packing little used items (holiday or seasonal items)Make travel and hotel reservations if necessaryMake sure your mortgage company has all the required documents they need before you pack themContact utility companies, and cable company for your new home and arrange for hookup

2 WEEKS BEFOREContact utility companies, banks and other companies you do business with to notify them of your moveMake special arrangements for moving or boarding your pets

1 WEEK BEFOREArrange for child care during the moveReturn library books and other borrowed items

2 OR 3 DAYS BEFOREArrange for cash/checks to pay the movers and other expensed on delivery dayDefrost your refrigerator & freezerSet aside valuables and important legal documents to go with you instead of moversPrepare a “SURVIVAL KIT” of items you may need immediately (see last page for ideas)
