What is Weight? What is Mass?
Weight is a measure of the amount of gravity pulling on an object.
Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object.
An object’s weight is affected by mass of the object and by gravity.
![Page 4: Moving Masses Newton’s Toy Box Activity 3. Vocabulary Acceleration Mass Newton’s second law of motion.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022072013/56649e445503460f94b38619/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Weight/Mass There is a direct relationship between mass
and weight….but they ARE NOT the same. An object’s weight is affected by mass of
the object and by gravity.

Give me an example of when an object loses weight but not mass.
When the object is in a weightless environment…..in space.
For instance, a person can lose five-sixth of his/her weight by going to the moon….his/her weight has changed but the person’s mass has not changed.
The mass stays the same!!!!!

Activity Spring Scale, Net Bag, Steel Ball, Wooden
Ball, and Hardcover Book. As a group, we will read over Activity Sheet

What is the relationship between mass and weight?
An object with more mass weighs more.

What is acceleration? Acceleration means the rate of change in
speed and direction. When an object is falling, its speed
increases. Acceleration is a measure of the rate of
increase or decrease in speed.

Activity Complete Step #2. Stop after Step #2 We will review your results before you
proceed in the activity

What is the relationship between force and acceleration in this step?…..between acceleration and mass? The stronger the force, the greater the
acceleration (the harder the push, the faster the ball rolls)
This is a direct relationship!!!! The ball with lesser mass, acceleration is
greater and it rolls faster than the ball with more mass. This is Newton’s 2nd Law of motion.

Newton’s Second Law of Motion F = Mass (m) x Acceleration (a) Activity: The book strikes the two balls with
the same force. We saw that the wooden ball accelerates faster than the steel ball.
a = F/m

Newton’s Second Law of Motion An object acted on by a force will
accelerate in the direction of the force.
