SANOFISanofi Pharmaceuticals has had a strong presence as one of the

finest multinational pharmaceutical companies

مجلة فصلية لمدينة الملك عبدالله االقتصادية11

Sanofi Pharmaceuticals has had a strong presence, not only in the Kingdom but globally, as one of the finest multinational pharmaceutical companies. In 2010, Sanofi put into effect their decision to open a production plant in the Kingdom, the plant was inaugurated. In this interview, Huna Magazine speaks to Sanofi about this decision, their experience with KAEC and the state of the Kingdom’s pharmaceutical industry.

Sanofi has had a strong presence in the Kingdom for years before the opening of the production facility, when did Sanofi decide to produce locally and why?

Sanofi took the decision to start its production facility in the kingdom eight years ago, and in 2010 Sanofi signed its agreement with SAGIA and the Saudi authorities. The essence of this investment is to help the Saudi economy’s diversification as a part of the kingdom’s vision, the Saudi market is a strategic market for Sanofi and further to discussions with Authorities and SAGIA, the choice of KAEC, the first Economic City in the Kingdom, offering pro-business and competitive environment.

Sanofi chose KAEC as the location for its first ever production plant, what makes KAEC the perfect setting?

KAEC is the perfect place to have such a facility: its strategic location, the facilities the city offers (King Abdullah port); which will ease Sanofi’s importation and exportation processes, the ease of governmental processes and the benefits a foreign direct investor as Sanofi can get due to the proximity of ECA’s offices in the city which is a one stop shop for all of the government related formalities.

Can you elaborate on Sanofi’s plans to export locally manufactured products to other GCC countries?

What’s important for the moment is the Saudi market, we will start delivering our medications first to the patients of Saudi Arabia; the site will bring Sanofi closer to its patients not just in Saudi Arabia, in our expiation plan the site will help reach out the GCC patients’ needs, no lead time for waiting for the products to be imported for our patients; yet we will be having our production site next to our customers.

The project will see the creation of jobs, new technology and science

What, in your opinion, does the opening of the production facility mean for Sanofi, for KAEC and for the Kingdom at large?

The project will see the creation of jobs, new technology and science, and is being hailed as a major milestone towards supporting patient’s needs in the Kingdom while giving Sanofi a strategic advantage to strengthen its existence in this important market. This cooperation will be reflected in locally-made medical treatments of high-quality and at affordable cost. Furthermore, Sanofi is committed to ensure appropriate training for Saudis specialized in the production of international-standard medicines’ and treatments’ solutions. For the kingdom:

• Benefit from Sanofi expertise and its international weight in the pharma industry, advanced technology processes and high quality standards.

• Reinforced presence for multi-national companies, creating new direct and indirect job opportunities for Saudi citizens.

• Increased access to Saudi patients to life-saving treatments

KAEC is the perfect place to have such a facility: its strategic location, the facilities the city offers

مجلة فصلية لمدينة الملك عبدالله االقتصادية13

Sanofi is committed to hiring qualified and skilled Saudis

Sanofi already has a wide range of products that are distributed across the Kingdom, since the new plant has the capacity to produce 19 million units of medical treatment, what products will you be manufacturing locally?

In the first phase we will produce up to 19 million boxes and it will manufacture and launch new products to KSA in the field of – but not limited to- diabetes, as well as cardiovascular, pain management, oncology, cholesterol management, CNS, anticoagulant, antibiotics, antihistamine and anti-acids.

Can you tell us a little about your plans to train and employ Saudi citizens?

We have successfully hired qualified Saudis in the plant, based on the current needs. We have a solid plan in place to further increase the numbers of Saudi employees within the production site over the next five years and of course, ensuring the training and up skilling of talent is a commitment for Sanofi to help them in their career development within the Group.

Sanofi is committed to supporting the communities that we operate in; qualified and skilled Saudis are in our top priorities; as this is aligned with the Saudization program especially in the healthcare sector. This commitment is leveraged with our partnerships and collaboration with the concerned governmental bodies and universities.

The foundation stone for Sanofi’s industrial facility was laid back in 2012, have you noticed any changes in the Kingdom’s pharmaceutical industry since then and if yes what?

The Saudi pharma industry is growing with a double digit growth for the past years and this is the results of several parameters such as:

• Fast growing population (~ 2% growth, the age range 65-45 is likely to be the fastest growing population and most demanding in terms of healthcare services),

• Growing diseases burden such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (prevalence of diabetes is 24% - the 6th nation worldwide 30% and 45% of male and female respectively are obese),

• Increased demand for quality healthcare services (pharma expenditure per capita is 7% growth every year)

• Gap in the healthcare infrastructures vs. other high income countries (hospital beds and physicians per 10,000 inhabitants is 2.5 times lower than other high income countries) and

• Willingness, capacity and capability for the government to fulfill patients’ requirements through investments in this sector.

Looking at these parameters and the opportunities it will generate in the future, it is definitely a growing and attractive market for the healthcare companies such as Sanofi. We have noticed as well a lot of multinational groups entering the local production arena, and this was due to the above mentioned factors.

INNOVATIVE IDEAS AND YOUNG TALENT LEADING THE

FUTURE OF KAEC

A popular quote by American author and entrepreneur Seth Godin states that, “there is no shortage of remarkable ideas, what’s missing is the will to execute them.” While this quote is spot on in many instances, it is the furthest representation of the scene at KAEC. A melting pot of exceptional ideas itself, KAEC not only promotes innovative ideas but also encourages their execution.

Late last year, in November 2014, KAEC launched one of the initiatives of its entrepreneurship program called “KAEC Startups” which was a collaboration with HRH Prince Andrew the Duke of York’s and titled “Pitch on Tour”, inspired by the Duke's “Pitch@Palace” initiative where entrepreneurs are invited to pitch their business ideas to an audience of angel investors, mentors and key business contacts at the St. James Palace. The Pitch on Tour event featured six start-ups from the UK who were participants in the Pitch@Palace events who KAEC sponsored to bring to Saudi and nine entrepreneurs from Saudi Arabia representing the most reputable entrepreneurial support organizations in the Kingdom: Saudi Aramco Entrepreneurship Center, KAUST, BADIR of King Abdulaziz Center for Science and Technology (KACST), and Qutof. The entreprepreneurs pitched their ideas in a maximum of three minutes or less to a group of executives and investors. KAEC aspires to be the Launch-pad for Saudi entrepreneurs to the world and the gateway for global innovators into Saudi Arabia. The event was proof of KAEC's support for young entrepreneurs and for fresh, innovative ideas. Commenting on this Mr. Fahd Al Rasheed said, "This event has rightfully positioned KAEC as an ecosystem that brings together the best entrepreneurial support organizations in Saudi Arabia and the

UK including strategic partners such as Saudi Aramco, KAUST, BADIR, and Qutoof to participate with us in this event. We are excited about the future prospects for these entrepreneurial ventures and we are keen to glue this ecosystem together by providing the necessary support to these entrepreneurs."

However, not only is KAEC promoting entrepreneurship but the community is promoting entrepreneurship ideas in younger minds. During the Duke of York's visit to KAEC, part of the key focus of his visit was "Education and Young Entrepreneurs", and the duke was given a tour of The World Academy where they launched their entrepreneurship program called "Dragon's Den". The program was implemented to help students start to think and feel like real-life entrepreneurs. Students pitched their creative business ideas to a panel of judges that included the Duke of York. The program allowed students to explore their creativity and develop their problem solving abilities in a competitive yet fun environment. The students pitched some great ideas including new technology devices and business endeavors that encouraged the use of environmentally conscious business plans.

To complement what the Kingdom offers in terms of supporting entrepreneurship,

KAEC is focusing on high-impact entrepreneurs who already have an idea with a proven business model and would like to grow it further. KAEC’s value proposition offering ease of doing business, access to markets, education, access to talent, and lifestyle appeals to such high-growth entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial ventures who contribute significantly to the economy in terms of wealth and jobs creation and help in creating an entrepreneurial role modelThe Duke spoke about his views on KSA and young entrepreneurship, "We have to encourage the young business to grow as fast as possible, and there is a huge potential in KSA, during my visit I noticed the government is encouraging entrepreneurship, and the young people to get skilled, as skills can make the difference. I believe that the entrepreneurs can impact positively and make a huge change across the whole world, and KAEC’s vision can be the great start and support for these entrepreneurs.”

The Kingdom is teeming with great potential in the form of remarkable ideas and great talent, there is no doubt the KAEC is one of the main support systems for this talent and their ideas while building its own army of young entrepreneurs with great potential right at the heart of the city.

The attendees were greatly impressed with the showcase and the visual display of Dali’s artwork.

The establishment of the exhibition comes in light of the City’s support for innovative local and international cultural initiatives. The exhibition that is included more than 34 art pieces, witnessed a remarkable response from the crowd especially towards Dali’s (Persistence of Memory) that is considered his most famous work. It depicts a number of melting clocks in a serene landscape.

Group CEO and MD of King Abdullah Economic City, Mr. Fahd Al-Rasheed stated: ”displaying the artworks of Dali within the City’s border, is considered an artistic event that enhances the City’s concept of following the example of grand cities that pay attention to local and international works of art.” He added:“such events allow art enthusiasts from various parties; art universities and organizations or fine art institutes, to closely observe Surrealism and to see the outcomes of the international artistic movements of other nations. We have seen a great deal of eagerness in the exhibition as people raced to Dali’s paintings.”

From his side, Mr. Ayman Tamer, Chairman and Managing Partner of Tamer Group, valued how King Abdullah Economic City has embraced this first of its kind exhibition in the Kingdom. He considers observing artworks at Dali’s level an opportunity for the interested parties of Saudi’s community to get acquainted with the artist’s work. He said: “King Abdullah Economic City has been chosen as the location for its high standards and qualities of services and facilities, in addition to its contemporary and modern features that make it a touristic front where all the international standards are available.” He also assured that one of the reasons behind Tamer Group’s organization of the exhibition is strengthening the “From Art to Art” initiative, which is concerned with supporting Saudi artists. It was launched by the “SA’AID” program as part of the initiatives that encourage local art through strategic partnerships with interested experts in the cultural and artistic fields, as part of social responsibility.

About Salvador Dali: He is a Spanish artist (Master of Surrealism) who lived in 1904-1989. He is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century; his work is characterized by the shock it causes the viewer and by its form and strangeness. He is also known for his peculiar personality and writings that touch upon the unbelievable. Dali’s most prominent life event is considered to be meeting the poet and psychologist, Andre’ Breton in Paris whom had organized the “Surrealist Manifesto” in 1924, which is regarded as the foundation of Surrealism. The term surreal as defined by poet Guillaume Apollinaire in 1917, means “above reality.”

"I AM VERY PROUD TO BE A MEMBER OF THE WORLD ACADEMY"

What is one aspect of teaching at The World Academy (TWA) that sets it apart from your prior teaching experiences? I can honestly say that in all of my prior teaching experiences I have never met a student body that is so happy and proud to be part of a school and so eager to learn. The students have formed a true connection with each other and the teachers, and the school spirit is very high.

All of the hallways are decorated with amazing pieces of student work. Students have presented amazing projects in the school science fair. TWA students are also participating in and winning games in sports tournaments. There is a real sense of community at TWA and I am happy and proud to be part of it.

Can you tell us a little about TWA education?TWA is following the American curriculum standards leading to the equivalent of an American high school diploma. The teaching faculty come from all over the world and have years of combined international experience. The students therefore get the best possible education with the basis of a strong, established curriculum supplemented by the knowledge and expertise the teachers bring from other curriculums around the world.

The faculty and administration are dedicated to offering the students the greatest opportunities for learning possible. Teachers are not afraid to call upon resources and ideas developed through inquiry based learning, the IB program, Montessori, Common Core, etc. The professional staff at TWA excel at adapting the available resources, modifying and enhancing the program in order to not only meet the goals laid out by the curriculum standards but to meet the educational and developmental needs of every student.

Why, in your opinion should someone choose The World Academy? What makes it different?

As a small but growing school the students and teachers have become a strong community. The teachers are able to not only get to know the students in their class, but to get to know most of the students in the school. The students and teachers support, care for, and respect each other.

The dedication to learning from both the teachers and students is clearly evident when you speak with the students. I have witnessed students arrive in September with very little English, and now, a very short 6 months later be able to hold a conversation. The teachers have set high expectations for the students and the

students are rising to the challenge. TWA students have even recently made it the top 16 finalists in the Reader’s Cup challenge in Dubai. It is clear that the students are truly committed to their education, and the teachers are going above and beyond to make sure they are given the best opportunities.

The World Academy offers a variety of facilities for its students including a state of the art library, an e-library and art suites, can you tell us a little about this?I am very excited about the facilities at TWA and the opportunities they present for enhancing teaching. The library has a constantly increasing selection of books and with the addition of the e-library, the students have an almost unlimited amount of knowledge at their fingertips.

The art suite is used for traditional art related classes and the students produce beautiful pieces of work which are proudly displayed throughout the school. But the students are not limited in their use of the facilities and the art suite is also used to create projects for other subjects such as English, Social Studies, and Arabic. Recently I used the art suite to supplement a creative project for my students in teaching geometry and measurement in Math.

The Audio suite is a fantastic set of rooms with its own recording and broadcast studio, and connected to our very own theatre. Students are encouraged to make use of the rooms for sound recording, video editing, and development of their talents. TWA students have their own student film making club, as well as a broadcasting club. Soon we will even be producing our own student run radio programs for broadcast into the local community.

I am also very excited for the upcoming opening of the new digital technologies lab with its various state of the art machines and 3D printers. It will provide TWA students with a unique opportunity to develop skills and practical application techniques which will enhance their educational journey.

The facilities at TWA are amazing and it is wonderful to look at the school and see so much available to the students. But without the support of the teachers and the administration it would just be a nice building with some nice things inside. It is their strong sense of community, their passion for education, and their pride in the school that are the true reasons the facilities can be considered world class.

How would you describe life in KAEC?Relaxed, quiet and very exciting. The city is growing and new facilities are opening all the time. There are always community events being run, and people are very friendly. It doesn’t have the stresses of traffic or a long commute, and it’s beach front living along the beautiful Red Sea. What more could you ask for?

It is obvious that you have a love for travelling; can you tell us a little about this? Not only have you travelled extensively, you have also been a scuba diving instructor and have worked in the field of IT, why did you ultimately choose to teach?

Although my mother was a teacher I did not grow up with the desire to follow in her footsteps. I tried various jobs, but it was not until a work opportunity arose teaching English as a second language in Japan that I would first be introduced to the wonderful world of teaching. When I returned from Japan I had an opportunity to teach math and statistics at one of the oldest and most respected all female colleges in Canada where I taught for 2 years.

My love for travel soon led me to leave again and travel around the world for 3 years on board ships with an international cruise line. I took up scuba diving and even became a scuba diving instructor in the cold North Seas of England. When I finally returned to Canada I held a prestigious position in a logistics and distribution company but something still felt missing.

It was scuba diving that inspired my next move to the Cayman Islands, and it was my IT skills that enabled me to secure a job at the university there. I was given the opportunity to teach a class in digital literacy as part of a community outreach program and I finally realized what was missing. I realized that what I truly loved and had a passion for was teaching. I went on to become the senior applications instructor at the university, teaching Information Technology courses there for 5 years.

When I first moved to Saudi Arabia I took a position in IT but it did not fulfill me. When a position became available at The World Academy, I jumped at the chance. I am very excited to be part of a developing school, and to be in KAEC at the beginning stages of such an ambitious project. I feel that I can use my experiences and passion to help guide my students to face new challenges and reach new heights. I love the excitement for learning I see every day in the eager young faces and I am looking forward to guiding my students towards a bright future.

“We want to show the world that our students can compete with the best!”

They came in First Place out of all the Saudi Arabian teams, and placed fourth overall – making us very proud! The competition, which is in both Arabic and English, features groups of students reading selected books and then answering questions about them. The goal of the international competition is to promote character building and teamwork, and provides a challenging contest for students who are more talented at academics than sport. One team was composed of students age 8 through 12, and the other team age 12 through 16. Both teams performed like superstars! The students started preparing for the event back in November, holding weekly practices to build up their reading comprehension skills. During the contest itself, they were asked 10 questions about each of the books. They were able to work together as a team to provide the correct answers. All students worked hard together in order to show off just how dedicated they are to their school. Rachel Almaliki, the English teacher and librarian who organized the trip said, “I feel this experience gave students the opportunity to take part in an international competition which they would normally not have access to, it opened their eyes to different genres of books and as well gave them the opportunity to experience Dubai.”

Mrs. Almaliki went on to say, “for the school I think this showed other schools what we are capable of despite being a small school, as well as showing other schools internationally what The World Academy in King Abdullah Economic City is capable of achieving when they are given the opportunity.” This was the first international trip our students have ever been taken, and we hope it is a sign of more to come. “We want to show the world that our students can compete with the best!” said Vice Principal Ken Carmichael who also chaperoned the trip. And, if the trophies that these students displayed to their fellow students are any indication, there is no doubt that this is a wonderful beginning to many more international competitions that TWA students will compete and excel.

In the city of the future, the future is fitness for local students who took place with their teachers in the Fun Run! The fun run through the desert by the Red Sea was a fun and healthy activity for everyone involved. They were able to run through beautiful palm trees and by a soon to be world-class golf course. The point of the Fun Run was to create an exciting and enjoyable after school activity that will also teach students to respect physical fitness and stay active. A total of 79 students and 5 of their teachers took place in the three kilometer run. The rest of the staff supported by manning water stations, safety positions and cheering sections.

“We are really excited that over ¼ of the students body decided to stretch their legs and build up their bodies while having fun in this optional event,” Said Ken Carmichael. “The fact that their teachers got involved sent a powerful message that running is fun and positive for everyone.”It just goes to show that with a little bit of enthusiasm, everyone can win. The students and teachers reported that it wasn’t too hot, the sky was bright blue, and that it was fun to come together and run through the beauty of the city of the future.

“When you make fitness fun, everyone wants to get involved,” said Principal William Fraser. “It gies to show that can inspire students to get fir and have a great time. That’s why it’s called the Fun Run!”

“Reading is fun,” said Will Fraser, the principal of The World Academy. “And, we want our students to become voracious readers because we know that students that love reading become lifelong learners.”

The World Academy wants all students not only to read more but to love reading. At the beginning of the school year, the school had a contest for students to showcase places they read. This photo montage really does go to show that reading can take place in the most amazing and unique locations.

Research shows that children who read more not only score higher on reading comprehension tests but also score better on standardized tests and gain a better understanding of different cultures.

The World Academy English Language Arts Department believes that reading is the key to academic success. As you can see by these photos, these students are definitely headed in the right direction!

Al Fursan Global Industrial Complex is relatively a new company, tell us about it.

Al Fursan Global Industrial Complex is a result of great cooperation between a group of Saudi and non-Saudi investors. Their aspirations met to create the best complex in the world; the complex uses the latest modern technology in the field of ceramic, tile production in all its kinds and variations and in the field of sanitary ware and all what is related to this industry of other products. In later stages, the company will construct factories to produce complimentary materials specialized for this industry like an adhesives factory.

What are the reasons which encouraged you to invest in KAEC?

Setting up this complex at King Abdullah Economic City is a result for all the facilities and incentives the City provide to investors in major industries like our complex. Those incentives include a lot of the City’s unique characteristics starting with its strategic location, and the flexible services it offers to the investors which presents a key element that attracted us to set up the complex in the City.

In your opinion, what are the qualifications that KAEC has which make it a key element in developing the industry sector in the Kingdom?

KAEC is characterized by a strategic location at Red Sea coast which is in the midst of the international sea line connections between Europe, Africa and Asia, in addition to the connection of the City interiorly by a road and train network that connects all the Kingdom regions together. It is also uniquely close to the two Holy cities, Mecca and Al Medina. The city is characterized by being connected to King Abdullah Port, an internal transport system, and a modern fiber optics network. Thus, the city provides the perfect environment for living and work.

Finally, the presence of Emaar Company at the Economic City and what it offers in great infrastructure is an additional characteristic.

What are your plans for the human resources department (training and employment of Saudi skills)?

We have made a future plan for all these departments:

Concerning the training department: We have developed a specialized training center set in different factories equipped with all training methods and laboratories. That is to provide a specialized and necessary training for the workers in the complex especially Saudis in the different sections design, operation, production, supervision, inspection, marketing and sales etc.

Concerning the human resources department: To ease the employment process in the City, we have developed many administrational, residential, and specialized buildings for the restaurant, masjed, and the entertainment center. That is an addition to the development of plants for electricity, gas, fuel for production, water both for regular use and industrial use, a road network within the complex, and that is to provide a stable complete environment for a safe working atmosphere which all workers can contribute with what they have in knowledge, skills, and creativity.Concerning the Saudi skills: We have made complete specialized programs related to the issue of "saudization" and that came as a response to the request of the decision makers. The complex has started executing these programs and will keep them going till we reach the Saudi quota requested.

What is the difference between having your company present in KAEC and any place else?

King Abdullah Economic City provides many services and advantages in addition to the existing infrastructure which will reflect positively on the operational and logistic expenses for Al Fursan Global Industrial Complex. This gives the city an edge over any other place the complex could be build in.

What are the future plans that the company will adopt to be on an international level and compete locally and internationally?

We are depending on several factors such as: The complex has a specialized team of technical staff with many years long experience ranging between 20 to 30 years. Our specialists and supervisors have visited most if not all the world’s factories in this field to observe and get to know what the technology has got to, which qualified us to be on top of this complex. It was implemented on the latest model using best equipment and production machinery from internationally renowned factories in this field, we have also used to our great and specialized expertise to achieve the best productivity in this area. The complex houses a collection of factories, including a ceramics, porcelain, and sanitary ware factory. Thankfully, those three factories are completed and are at the test production to fulfill governmental project and local market demand with products that have high quality and specifications. The Group is currently completing special arrangements establish a mixers and faucets factory, as well as tableware factory, and these two factories are considered (mixers and faucets factory and the tableware factory) one of their kind in the Kingdom, which will hopefully enhance the reputation of the Kingdom in this field, particularly when a part of these products will be exported abroad.

Do you have any intension to expand your business inside the KAEC?

Yes, we have future plans in the city and there are many new projects that will be established here. From our side, we will be working to encourage investment and create industrial projects within King Abdullah Economic City.
