Super Bowltops ToledoTV sweeps

The Super Bowl not only proved to be a ratings bonanza nationally during the February sweeps period, it was a major hit in the Toledo television market.

The Daytona 500 and Acad-emy Awards also reeled in high marks, according to Nielsen Media Research ratings released last week.

An estimated 93.2 million viewers nationally watched Pey-ton Manning and the Indianap-olis Colts beat the Chicago Bears 29-17 in soggy Super Bowl XLI at Dolphin Stadium in Miami.

It was the second-most-watched Super Bowl broadcast ever, topped only by the 94.1 million viewers who tuned in to see Super Bowl XXX.

Behind that game in 1996 be-tween the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers, and the fi nal episode of M*A*S*H on Feb. 28, 1983, this year’s Super Bowl was the third-most-watched pro-gram in television history.

The Feb. 4 game, which also is extremely popular for its commercials, received a 55 rat-

ing and a 72 share in Toledo — the national averages were 42.6 and 64 — during the broadcast on CBS (WTOL-TV, Channel 11).

That means that 55 percent of all house-

holds in Toledo were tuned to the game, and that 72 percent of all households watching TV that Sunday night were viewing the game.

It was, far and away, the most-watched show of February.

It’s hard to fathom how many viewers in the Toledo market might actually tune in if the hapless Cleveland Browns or Detroit Lions ever made the Su-per Bowl.

The second-most-watched show in Toledo last month was the Daytona 500 on Fox (WUPW-TV, Channel 36).

The Great American Race on Feb. 18, which saw Kevin Har-vick nose out Mark Martin in a frantic fi nish, drew just a 10.1 rating and 20 share nationally, but those numbers escalated to 20 and 44 here.

Toledo’s third-most-watched program was the Feb. 25 Acad-emy Awards on ABC (WTVG-TV, Channel 13).

The telecast drew a 27.7 rating and 42 share in the big cities, and a 21 and 42 in Toledo.

The most popular morning news show in the Toledo market is Good Morning America on ABC. The Today Show on NBC (WNWO-TV, Channel 24) is sec-ond, followed by The Early Showon CBS.

When it comes to game shows, The Price is Right on CBS takes home the biggest share of the viewing audience at 11 a.m.

The Oprah Winfrey Show on CBS easily outdistances Ellenas the top afternoon syndicated talk show in Toledo at 4 p.m.

The Late Show with David Letterman on CBS leads the way at night, trailed by both The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Nightline in the 11:30 time slot.

American Idol remains an im-mensely popular show on Fox. Toledo, like the rest of the coun-try, has taken a liking to Simon Cowell’s scowl.

Like American Idol, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives and CBS’ CSI: Mi-ami and The Young and the Rest-less consistently register shares in the 30s.

But all fi ve have a long way to go to catch up to the Super Bowl. It’s tough for any series to compete with a once-a-year event.

In his quest to make fun of every sport on the planet, Will Ferrell sets his sights on the fi gure-skating arena and, in Blades of Glory, blows its traditions — and pretensions — sky high.

It’s hard to deny the beauty and athleticism of fi gure skating but, to an out-sider, the differences among moves such as the salchow, the axel, the toe loop, and the camel can be baffl ing, and the scoring is totally arcane.

Blades of Glory skewers every element of the sport, from the fans to the cos-tumes to the behind-the-scenes bickering, with such over-the-top glee and the complicity of its big names (Dorothy Hamill, Peggy Fleming, Brian Boitano, and

I have a warning for Donald Trump: Being bald isn’t for everyone.

Not that The Donald has a choice. If the professional wrestler he chose to represent him Sunday at WrestleMania 23 in Detroit loses, Trump will have to shave his head as part of a bet with WWE chairman Vince McMahon .

It might not be so bad. A lot of people have tried the Mr. Clean look and turned out great.

Michael Jordan made it an iconic look for athletes. Bruce Willis made it look tough. YulBrynner made it look smooth.

But. There’s always a but. Some heads, on some people, were never

meant to be revealed. Like Britney Spears ,

How much is too much?“I’m not sure.”Tammy Kinsey paused.“That’s the question, isn’t

it?”When the University of

Toledo’s seventh annual Censorship Symposium kicks off tonight with Kirby Dick’s entertaining movie-ratings documentary This Film is Not Yet Rated, spirits will be high, consciences outraged; it’s a lively, if obvi-ous note to open on. Tomor-row afternoon, the movie

who last month shaved her head in a spurt of rebellion.

Or me.I shaved my head a few years ago on a

whim, and I’ll never regret it. But everyone who came in contact with me did.

My friends with hair begged me not to do it. They said my skull is oddly shaped, that hair like mine was meant to cover the mistakes of creation, that my already shaky stud-factor would slip even more.

My balding friends wailed that people

with hair ought to do everything in their power to keep it, that it might not grow back, that I was wasting my youth.

I just thought it would make me look like I was from the future.

It took about an hour to shave my head all the way to the skin. Some friends helped me go Kojak, starting with clippers and carefully fi nishing with disposable Bics.

When it ended, there were giggles all around. My naked noggin was a little whiter than the rest of my body and a lot more razor burned.

Something else was different, too. You see the whole world a lot differently when you don’t have any hair.
