Creating Community Through People, Parks & Programs 2

Words from a Fitness GuruI just read an article titled “38 New Year’s resolutions to make now!” Can you imagine trying to make 38 changes to your lifestyle? That would be insanely difficult and would likely result in failure for most people. One of the biggest reasons people fail at resolutions is that they try to make too big of a change or try to make too many changes at once. So this year we’re going to keep it simple. Here are Four Resolutions to make in 2018.Laugh More: If you joined us for Laughter Yoga last month then you know how important it is to laugh. Studies have shown that the simple act of laughing can reduce stress, enhance learning, and reduce short term memory loss. Share stories about something that made you laugh today with someone who will laugh with you. Grab the grandkids and watch funny videos on the computer or watch your favorite comedies on TV. I remember growing up watching Hee Haw with my grandparents. And while I didn’t get half the jokes, it was still a lot of fun to sit and watch with them. And maybe y’all will be heehawing to a better quality of life in 2018.Move More: Exercise not only makes your body stronger and healthier it also reduces stress levels and gives you energy. We have plenty of exercise options here at the Springdale Community Center such as fitness classes and the Fitness Center. There are more options available around the community. You can take a simple 20 minute walk 3-4 days per week. Even low or limited mobility people shouldn’t be discouraged from regular exercise. We have classes such as Adapt-2-Fit, LIFE, and Balance for LIFE that are designed for just such folks. Eat Better: Every year this is the number one New Years Resolution and for good reason. A healthy diet provides one of the best ways to improve and protect your health as you age. Each meal is an opportunity for healthy eating. Now that doesn’t mean you have to give up bacon or cinnamon rolls. I could never ask you do something I’m not willing to do! I’m just asking you to take some time to make a considerate, conscious choice each time you eat. No more mindless snacking or grabbing something unhealthy because it’s quick. Stock up on healthy choices for snacks. Read labels when you shop. Look at the amount of calories in a meal when you eat out. Then you will be taking control of your eating habits instead of it controlling you.Be Your Cheerleader: Build yourself up instead of breaking yourself down. Be kind and appreciative to yourself in all your self-talk and it will go a long way to improving your confidence and outlook on life. Applaud your efforts rather than berating yourself for not having done enough. When you haven’t lost enough weight, or you eat a cookie instead of an apple, remind yourself of all the positive benefits you’ve already experienced and all the positive changes you’re looking forward to in the future. Celebrate your successes. Even the small ones which will boost your happiness which gives you the momentum to keep moving forward. For all your New Years Resolutions, baby steps are the key. Just remember realistic and obtainable. If you would like some help with goals, the Fitness Team is available to help you have a healthy and happy 2018.
