MoveSMART® Executive Guide

1

Safety performance has significant impact on profitability, morale and service. It is critical for a company to achieve multiple results with any initiative—like hittting three bulls-eyes with one arrow—especially when resources are tight and expectations are high.

MoveSMART’s mission is to become a crucial leverage point for simultaneously reducing costs, heightening productivity, and boosting worker receptivity and morale.

Clients report the MoveSMART system has cut injuries by as much as eighty-two percent within a short time. For example, Anheuser-Busch did a six year analysis of ROI from MoveSMART, finding that, after accounting for all internal implementation costs (release time and more) and fees, inflation-adjusted costs of strains and sprains fell fifty-six percent and those of slips, trips and falls were lowered by fifty percent. Many more statistical results are cited in this guide.

A Vice President of a Fortune 100 company said, “MoveSMART has been better received by people in our plants than any other program we’ve ever offered;” and by a Vice President of a Fortune 1000 company, “The most impressive part about MoveSMART is that, with safety issues, it gets people to take responsibility for themselves. What excited me is that it is driven by peer groups here at work. Union management and my managers are excited about it."

How have we accomplished the significant results in organizations that have previously tried other interventions? Through customization to specific real-world safety risks and cultural obstacles, inspiring excitement for safety and personal control and by creating realistic implementation for behavioral change.

There is more information in this guide on our approach, references, a sample range of reported client results, articles, interviews and more. You can download an introductory MoveSMART Powerpoint presentation at www.movesmart.com/ms2005.

We hope to help you move well above a plateau of performance to heighten safety, motivation and productivity.

TOWARD WORLD CLASS SAFETY

MoveSMART focuses on changing individual behaviors and organizational safety culture. Experience and observations of organizations that have tried numerous approaches indicate this multi-level emphasis is the only way to create significant and lasting changes in safety performance with "personal" injuries (that have strong subjective and individual contributors).

Our approach turns selected staff into agents for behavior change. We spearhead turnarounds—in mental approaches and physical habits—that lead to sizable improvements. We work with executives, mid-managers, employee/union leadership, and turn selected line staff into agents of change. We've often been told that, after a MoveSMART system implementation, walls of long-standing conflict between groups of people are broken through, and that previously-conflicting parties focus together toward safety.

The MoveSMART system, called a “quantum leap in safety” by one corporate Safety Director, has been in existence since 1983. MoveSMART is based on motivational psychology, certain martial arts principles, ergonomics, and work experience. We focus on simultaneously:

• Significantly reducing injuries, both in the short- and long-term• Improving morale, receptiveness to change and personal accountability for safety• Boosting workers’ attention and attitude control• Enhancing retention and employees’ perceptions of the organization• Catalyzing involvement and commitment

There are several intervention modules available, customized to the needs, risk exposures and culture of each client—none of our programs are “canned.” We tailor techniques, applications and training materials (provided to each Instructor we teach) to a company's culture, at-risk exposure, needs, and objectives.

Our programs emphasize inspiring people to use powerful techniques for personal safety. For example, we know that people may be exposed to strains and sprains by pushing, pulling, lift-ing one- and two-handed, torquing, maintaining static positions, climbing, reaching, working in awkward or restricted positions, or getting onto and off of equipment. We demonstrate methods for these activities, have your employees try them and make their own decision whether they feel immediate improvements in heightened strength, balance, coordination, control and lessened tension.

MoveSMART brought dramatic results in safety performance and culture to many organizations; you may also achieve significant results. But, like anything else that must be experienced to be evaluated (think of simply reading about the taste of salt), the most glowing recommendations won’t convey its power and potential for you.

MOVESMART STRATEGY

Foster Practical Injury Prevention

Emphasis is on showing principles and techniques to make it easier and safer to perform actual work tasks—lifting one- and two-handed, pushing, pulling, using hand tools, dragging, climbing, descending, reaching, etc.

Strategies and techniques have been developed from martial arts, ergonomics and practical work experience.

Focus is on preventing cumulative and acute injuries.

Boost Safe Behavior

Enhance awareness of safe behavior through encouraging personal responsibility, judgment and motivation.

Encourage the employee to adopt safe behaviors twenty-four hours a day.

Accelerate Safety Culture

Heighten management-employee safety communications and involvement for ongoing safety improvements.

Change is most likely to occur when all levels in an organization are excited and involved and can feel improvements occurring.

WHAT CLIENTS REPORT

Statistical ResultsBoeing: “In our division, prior to institution of MoveSMART, there were 1,700 annualized work

days lost to injury; six months after MoveSMART training was initially instituted, there were 400 annualized work days lost to injury—a 76% improvement.” John Foy, Safety Coordinator

Anheuser-Busch: The company thoroughly analyzed ROI from MoveSMART in the period 1991–1997 and the MoveSMART "scorecard” revealed cost savings of 55% in strains and sprains and 72% in slips, trips and falls. Included in this analysis were all internal costs (releasing employees for training, development, inflation) as well as fees paid for training. "A lost-time injury reduction of 78% from 1991–1997.“ Anheuser-Busch’s 1997 Environmental Health and Safety Annual Report

Kodak: “Within Central Maintenance Services, we just celebrated fifteen months without a lost-time incident. As you can imagine, we're quite pleased about that. We believe MoveSMART is largely responsible for these figures.” Jens Wrage, Safety & Environmental Coordinator

American Airlines: “Our Puerto Rico station, which had proven difficult to change, experienced over a 68% reduction in lost time injuries that we directly attribute to MoveSMART; and there were significant improvements in morale as well.” J.C. Goya, Manager of Employee Safety

Bell Helicopter: “We originally gave MoveSMART training to employees who were ‘accident repeaters’ with soft tissue injuries. Our previous statistics indicated 17% of all ‘repeaters’ would have another soft tissue injury within one year; of those we trained, only 3% had a repeat injury—an 82% improvement.” Skipper Kendrick, Corporate Safety Director

Exxon: “Within one year after MoveSMART training our incidence of falls dropped 42%.” Ed Havard, Safety Director, Exxon Offshore Division

Quebecor Printing: “At Brattleboro plant, they've seen a 74% decrease in their accident rate. The changes are not completely due to the MoveSMART training, but I think it's the main reason for the change.” Gary Daum, Senior Vice-President & General Manager, Fairfield/Martinsburg/Book Press

Amtrak: “A tremendous reduction of more than 50% in one year. Employees say it's the best safety training they've ever received in Amtrak, and the evidence is that people are actu-ally clamoring to get INTO the training, instead of actively trying to avoid it. I’d say MoveSMART has added significantly to Amtrak’s safety program, been one of the most effective injury-prevention tools we’ve ever used, and done more for morale than any single program I’ve seen.” Peter Hall, General Manager of Safety, Health and Environment

Sara Lee Baking Group: “For the first two years of MoveSMART training, we saw overall costs reduced by well over 50%, including a 50% decrease in lost time and a 60% decrease in strains and back injuries.” Steve Nixon, Director of Corporate Safety

S&C Electric: “The MoveSMART training is going great. Any area where we’ve had the training hasn’t had a lost-time accident. That’s pretty remarkable. For example, one location of four-hundred people has gone three years without a lost-time accident.” Bill Muller, Safety and Environment Coordinator

Cascade General: “We’ve experienced a 300% return on investment from MoveSMART instruc-tor training.” Paul Manzi, Corporate Safety Director

Smithsonian Institution: “We attribute the MoveSMART training with a 22% reduction of strains and sprains in one year.” Walt Bailey, Safety Director

Schlumberger: “This is an excellent course. We're saving over four million dollars a year in lost work days. We attribute this to the MoveSMART stepping, handling and lifting training and to training in defensive driving.” Clint McMath, Director of Corporate Safety

Cultural ChangeDuPont: “This program has made a tremendous difference in my everyday activities. I use

it daily; all techniques—it has changed my life and my health. Thank you.” Stacie Marthilijohni, MoveSMART Instructor, Victoria Texas plant

BP Amoco: “I'm extremely pleased with the program and service. I couldn’t be happier with it.” Don Burkhart, HSE Manager

American Airlines: “The response of our employees to MoveSMART was phenomenal! It’s the best training program we’ve ever had at American Airlines." Arthur Considine, then-Manager, DFW Airport (now Base Manager, Flight Service- SFO)

3M: “Your service, commitment and follow-through are excellent. Couldn't have asked for better instructors. They really know how to connect with the group.” Chuck Spisak, Environmental, Health & Safety Manager

Detroit Edison/Michigan Consolidated Gas: “Thanks again for providing a back safety pro-gram that works and is used by employees, and also for a staff of professional, dedicated people that help provide this excellent training. Our employees ask me constantly when they're going to receive more MoveSMART training and have commented that they still use many of the techniques taught in class; it's one of the few training programs employ-ees ask to attend.” John Spreyer, Safety Manager

Alcoa: “Your methodology is an excellent way to get people involved in their personal safety and to feel good about themselves.” Vince Adorno, Vice President

Petro-Canada: “The very essence of MoveSMART is to challenge people to take personal responsibility for their own safety and well-being. We’ve had great success in the past three years.” Al Read, Safety Manager

Rock-Tenn: “What excited me is you can use this away from work too, and it's driven by peer groups here at work. Acceptance level was a whole lot greater. Union Management and managers are excited about it.” Al Smith, V.P. Converting, Rock-Tenn Company

Anheuser-Busch: “MoveSMART has been better received in our plants than any other program we’ve ever offered.” Jack Russell, Vice-President of Corporate Safety & Risk Management

TRAINING PROGRAMS

MoveSMART is a comprehensive, positive employee safety system designed to produce multiple results; where well-implemented, many organizations world-wide have reported lasting, impressive improvements in safety performance and culture.

We change behavior—but approach this in a different manner than chart-and-audit programs. MoveSMART focuses on providing the inspiration and tools for people to become self-motivated and self-monitoring. As part of our building in leadership on all levels, we think it critical for everyone to develop attitude and skills for ongoing self-correction. Clients tell us MoveSMART complements and can reinvigorate their existing “behavioral” program.

All of our programs are designed so that everyone has an “AHA!” experience, becomes personally interested, awakened, excited about small changes they can make that result in large improvements in their strength and balance and reduced tension.

Our programs focus on reducing injury while simultaneously raising morale, personal responsibility and work efficiency. We also offer a range of programs for safety leadership development.

Programs include:

Safer and Stronger Handling: Preventing strains and sprains; redirecting forces; pushing, pulling, using tools, lifting one-/two-handed, working in challenging positions; instilling personal control; elevating awareness of hidden risks 24/7.

FallSAFE™ Boosting Balance: Reducing slips, trips and falls on uneven and slippery surfaces, stairs and ladders; safety on-the-move: preventing injuries related to walking, on changing or uneven surfaces, in the dark, stepping over or under, stairs/ladders, ducking under; preventing impact and bodily reaction injuries; heightening balance and judgment; boosting internal control and healthy lifestyle.

HandSMART™: Preventing hand, finger, wrist and arm injuries when using tools and machin-ery, and from both repetitive and high-exposure jobs; what workers can do to prevent hand injuries, while reinforcing good use of lock-out-tag-out; guarding and personal pro-tective equipment.

Advancing MoveSMART—Extending Handling & Attention Skills: Furthering strain and sprain prevention, with more physical, attentional and judgment techniques and strategies; boosting material handling and attention skills; reinforcing Safer and Stronger Handling module; refresh and recertify previously trained MoveSMART instructors’ body awareness and judgement; reinforcing previous MoveSMART modules.

SPECIALIZED MOVESMART PROGRAMS

OfficeSMART®: Boosting safety in and out of the office; motivating, training and reinforcing safe behavior; preventing common injuries to office staff and to those who work between the office and the field; reducing stress, fatigue and soreness; boosting in-office handling and static loading; reducing risks from repetitive motions, equipment placement and slip and fall prevention.

LiftSMART®: Preventing back, shoulder, arm, neck and knee injuries; reducing injuries from repetitive and heavy lifting; challenging loads (shifting center of gravity, in tight quarters, bulky, oddly-shaped, etc); building usable strength, balance, control, body awareness and judgment; reinforcing previous MoveSMART modules—advanced applications; boosting personal health at work and at home.

CULTURAL CHANGE SYSTEMS

Attention Control for Safety and High Performance: Taking more effective conscious con-trol of attention to direct, scan for hazards, probes; focusing at will; developing uncon-scious default habits for attention control during repetitive and high-demand tasks under time pressures (this entails being able to select what to focus on to better sustain attention when desired and switch attention when needed); developing a more effective Receptive Attention Control to better monitor and be alerted to changing risks even while concen-trating on performing a task; translating attention control into improved judgment.

Safety Leadership Power: For senior executives. Focus is on exciting interest in safety leader-ship, strategically utilizing safety toward overall organizational objectives, leveraged strat-egies for reaching significant results with minimum time expenditure on part of execu-tives, more.

Accident Repeater Systems: Helping break the chain of accident repeaters, preventing future injuries and claims by encouraging personal responsibility for safety, boosting personal judgment and thinking for safety, providing appropriate skills for preventing prevalent injuries, repositioning/turning around existing “accident repeaters” implementing a posi-tive approach.

Harnessing Stress Power: In challenging times, unmanaged stress contributes to accidents, cumulative trauma and erodes employee health. This interactive training dem-onstrates innovative strategies and methods for harnessing stress as a positive force for greater personal safety, health and involvement.

24-HOUR SAFETY

MoveSMART emphasizes 24-hour safety. Because many sprains and strains are cumulative in nature, it’s important to change people’s behavior at home as well as at work. And because people are predominantly creatures of habit and won’t lift one way at work and another at home, it’s important to develop safe, default behaviors they can use—and want to use everywhere. To change long-standing habits at work, it is critical to affect behavior at home and in outside activities employees enjoy—which both reinforces at-work safety habits and also prevents off-work injuries.

For example, our approach to ergonomics goes beyond workstation/tool design and administrative controls (although both are important) to “injury-proofing” people—at work and at home. We define ergonomics as “improving the fit between people and their work” and believe this best approached by both:

Cost-effectively adapting the workplace, tools, etc., to the range of workers doing the job. For example, American Airlines credits a simple design we suggested in saving millions of dollars in lost-time injuries.

Helping people make small physical and judgment adaptations that reduce forces concentrating in vulnerable parts of their bodies.

DEVELOPING PERSONAL SAFETY SKILLS

We believe that each person is in charge of their personal safety, like the captain of a ship—some are very able navigators and some need help steering the waters to become stronger and more successful personal safety directors. Experience has shown there are two critical sets of skills workers need to become safer and more effective—both of which we incorporate into any MoveSMART training:

Mental skills: Personal safety accountability (where they embrace the idea they are ultimately “the safety director of their own life”), focus on teamwork, receptivity to change, judgment (risk analysis, 24/7 thinking), ability to better control their own attention.

Physical skills: Ability to maximize personal leverage and strength, improved balance and coordination, transfer of forces away from vulnerable areas and recovery methods.

3 WAYS TO IMPLEMENT MOVESMART

Over the past twenty years, we've trained over twenty thousand instructors in hundreds of companies which have instituted our programs in sixty-three countries. And we've delivered Direct Training for tens of thousands of workers in a wide range of industries.

1. CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS FOR LEADERSHIP: The purpose of conference presentations are to provide an program that boosts safety leadership, offers an overview of our approach and furthers participant motivation.

2. DIRECT TRAINING: For training intervention that focuses on techniques and injury prevention, we offer Direct Training, where one of our Instructor-Resources instructs your employees in groups of up to twenty per seminar. Each seminar lasts 2.5 to 4 hours (to suit your schedule); up to two of these seminars can be conducted within a 24-hour

period.

3. INSTRUCTOR-RESOURCE TRAINING (Train-the-Trainer): A fully customized system for creating and sustaining significant cultural and safety performance changes. Our Instructor-Resources train your selected employees first as Instructors, second as informal coaches and third, as reinforcement agents for behavioral change. These certified MoveSMART Instructor resources in turn train their co-workers and implement MoveSMART throughout the organization.

While the MoveSMART Instructor-Resource Training system is our most powerful intervention, each of the above three approaches have strengths and limitations. We can help you determine which would best suit your specific needs.

MOVESMART: SAFER, STRONGER, MORE IN CONTROL™

Have High Expectations: Don’t write off injuries as “inevitable.” Substantial and lasting changes are happening in organizations throughout the world right now.

The Power of Safety: Safety is much more than what people might think—it’s not just about preventing something from happening that people don’t think will ever occur—it’s about living with energy, health and excitement and getting done what’s important to you.

Personal Control: People are ultimately in control of themselves—blaming others for our problems is not honest or effective and is a waste of energy. Our goal is to help each person become the active “safety director of his or her own life.”

Potential for Significant, Lasting Change: Everyone has tremendous potential for power and control. We teach practical methods for immediately unleashing improved coordination and balance, as well as strategies for long-term control and strength. Age, size, physical condition, education level, origin, etc. make each of us different, but are not excuses or hindrances to lasting change and development.

Developing Safe Habits: At-home safety is as important as safety at work. We are in the business of creating positive physical and mental habits. An at-home focus often changes people’s perceptions of safety and motivates them positively. (“The same methods for work safety can also help you become better at your favorite sports and hobbies, as well as helping protect those you care about.”)

Personalized Methods: There are many safe and effective ways to do a job, based upon experience, size, condition, pre-existing injuries and personal preference. We don’t believe it works to force people to conform to the “one right way”of doing a job. Methods are individualized.

Inviting—Not Forcing—Change: Change and stress are not our enemies, but a reality of living. People can learn to master these forces to forward their goals. You can’t make people change—you can only “invite” change by making it easy and attractive for them to adopt new behaviors.

Leadership From All Directions: Leadership comes from management, union and employees/line staff. Leaders will do best when they utilize, not fight, natural forces of motivation, competition, skepticism, limits of attention, habit formation, desire for control and self-protection. Everyone has responsibility for their own safety and for doing what they can to support organizational safety.

Active Persuasion: Actions speak louder than words. It’s not enough to tell people something—they have to feel it to believe it. We emphasize helping people learn principles and strategies and at the same time, acquire specific methods and techniques.
