LED evolution

History of light production by LED – an Englishman Henry Joseph Round discovers the physical effect of electroluminescence. As at the time he was actually engaged in a new radio locating process for sea traffic the discovery is at first forgotten.

The first red luminescent diode of type GaAsP comes onto the market.The industrially produced LED is born.

From the beginning of the seventies LEDs are available in further colours: green, orange, and yellow. Performance and effectiveness is continually being improved in all LEDs.

An LED is a semiconductor device that emits

visible light of a certain colour. An LED is

fundamentally different from conventional light

sources such as incandescent, fluorescent and

gas-discharge lamps as it has no gas or

filament, it has no fragile glass bulb and it has

no failure-prone moving parts.

The light is generated when the electrons strive

to achieve balance. When the current is

connected to the diode, the excess and

shortage balance out, creating light.

Like any diode, an LED consists of a single p-n semiconductor

junction. Through a process called doping, the n-type material is

negatively charged and the p-type material is positively charged.

The atoms in the n-type material have extra electrons, while the

atoms in the p-type material have electron holes – electrons

missing from their outer rings. Applying current to the diode

pushes the atoms in the n-type and p-type materials towards

the junction.

When extra electrons in the n-type material fall into the holes in

the p-type material, they release energy in the form of photons,

the basic unit of electromagnetic radiation. The material in the

LED is selected so that the wavelength of the released photons

falls within the visible portion of the light spectrum.

how LEDs produce light

Mixed-colour white light:

One approach is to mix the light from several coloured LEDs

to create a spectral power distribution that appears white.

Similarly, so-called tri-phosphor fluorescent lamps use three

phosphors, each emitting a relatively narrow spectrum of blue,

green or red light upon receiving ultraviolet radiation from the

mercury arc in the lamp tube. By locating red, green and blue

LEDs adjacent to one another, and properly mixing the amount

of their output, the resulting light is white in appearance.

Presently, there are two approaches

to creating white light.

Another approach to generating white light is by use

of phosphors together with a short-wavelength LED.

For example, when one phosphor material used in LEDs is

illuminated by blue light, it emits yellow light having a fairly

broad spectral power distribution. By incorporating the

phosphor in the body of a blue LED with a peak wavelength

around 450 to 470 nanometers, some of the blue light will be

converted to yellow light by the phosphor. The remaining blue

light, when mixed with the yellow light, results in white light.

Phosphor-converted white light:


The colour rendering index (CRI) (sometimes called colour

rendition index), is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light

source to reproduce the colours of various objects faithfully in

comparison with an ideal or natural light source.

The definition of CRI as per CIE is – Colour rendering: Effect of an

illuminant on the colour appearance of objects by conscious or

subconscious comparison with their colour appearance under a

reference illuminant minimum acceptable CRI for a light source

depends on the application:

A CRI of 90+ is required in retail and workspaces where faithful

colour rendering is crucial; like in shops displaying fine

merchandise or graphic design studios.

Most office, retail, school, educational, medical and other work

and residential spaces require a CRI of 70-90.

Industrial, storage and security lighting where colour fidelity is not

important can use sources with minimum CRI as low as 50.

The CRI has been used to compare incandescent, fluorescent

and HID lamps for many years but the CIE has concluded that

CRI cannot predict the colour quality of white light LEDs.

How LEDs produce millions of Colours?

LED manufacturers typically offer a variety of LED products in a

range of colours – royal blue, blue, green, amber, red-orange, red

etc. By itself, an LED can emit only the one colour that the

specific components of its material can produce. The real

multiple colours are possible when LEDs of different colours are

combined. Combining red, green and blue LEDs in a single LED

device, such as a lighting fixture or multi-chip LED, and

controlling their relative intensities can produce millions of

colours. An LED device uses the RGB (r=red, g=green and

b=blue) colour model like a television screen or a computer

monitor.

The diagram shows the CIE 1931 colour space, created by the

International Commission on Illumination (CIE) in 1931 to define

the entire range or gamut of colours visible to the average viewer.

The gamut of colour that an LED fixture or multi-chip LED can

produce depends on the specific colours of the individual red,

green and blue LEDs used in that fixture or chip.

The three colour points of the individual LEDs used in a tricolour

device describe the triangle (as shown in the figure below).

In theory, the device can produce every colour point within the

triangle. In practice, since a tricolour LED device is usually

controlled digitally, it can produce a sampling of the possible

colours within the triangle.

What is CCT

The temperature in the CCT refers to black body radiation –

the light emitted by a solid object with certain properties,

heated to the point of incandescence - and is expressed

in ºK, a standard measurement of absolute temperature.

'A black body is an object that absorbs all electromagnetic

radiation falling on it. Because it reflects no light, a black

body appears black. No perfect black bodies exist, but

certain metals offer good approximations. As a black body

gets hotter, the light it emits progresses through a sequence

of colours, from red to orange to yellow to white to blue.

The colour temperature of a light source is the temperature

of an ideal black-body radiator that radiates light of

comparable hue to that of the light source.

Colour temperature is conventionally stated in the unit of

absolute temperature, the kelvin, having the unit symbol K.


In the industrial production of LEDs, there are always

differences within batches: diodes vary, for example,

in their colour and luminous intensity. To guaranty

constant lighting quality with the same brightness

level and uniform light colour, LEDs need to be

sorted within each batch. This is called binning.

Major criteria here are:

Luminous flux, measured in lumens (lm)

Colour temperature, measured in kelvins (K)

Forward voltage, measured in volts (V)

Today, LEDs are sorted on the basis of the ANSI bin standard

(ANSI - American National Standards Institute). This defines

colour variations in XY space with the help of a MacAdam ellipse

and recommends that colour values should be within an ellipse

with four threshold units. LEDs in these tightly defined bins

guarantee uniform light colours, e.g. 2,700 K for warm white.

The way LED modules work in a luminaire is crucially

influenced by current and voltage supply. Drivers ensure

optimal luminous efficacy and longevity by precisely defining

electrical parameters.

Drivers are selected by the type and application of the LED

luminaire. Apart from their constructive design, the supply

voltage of drivers is a matter of key significance.

There are 2 types of drivers for transforming mains voltage

for LEDs:

Constant Voltage Drivers – Drivers with Constant output

voltage reduce the mains voltage from 230-240V to a

stabilised low voltage such as 10,12 or 24V and are called

constant voltage drivers

Constant Current Drivers – Drivers with constant output

current produce a stabilised output current from 230-240V

mains voltage. The constant output currents realised are

typically from 120mA to 1400mA.

Thermal management

Even though the light radiated by an LED is not hot, it is

wrong to assume that LEDs do not give off heat. Just like any

other lamps, LEDs convert only part of the incoming energy

into light-the rest generates heat inside the semi-conductor.

To ensure a long life and high efficiency, it is imperative that

this heat should be transferred.

This applies particularly to high luminous flux LEDs.

Reliable manufacturers thus always quote an LED ambient

temperature in which the luminous flux and life span of their

luminaires and modules are reached.

Temperature and service life

The luminous flux of an LED will decrease over time, like

that of other lamps. This ageing process speeds up at

higher temperatures. This is why the heat produced by an

LED must be dissipated efficiently. Therefore, reliable thermal

management is indispensable for an LED to have a long

service life.

cool lightIn contrast to most light sources, LEDs radiate very little

heat in the form of IR that can cause damage to sensitive

objects or fabrics. Wasted energy is dispersed as heat

through the base of the LED.

LEDs mostly fail by dimming over time, rather than the

abrupt burn-out of incandescent bulbs.

LEDs generally are classified as having life of 50000

Lumen depreciation trends

Technologies (ASSIST) has published a series of

recommendations defining the useful life of LED Light

sources. ASSIST defines useful life as the length of time a

light source delivers a minimum acceptable level of light in a

given application.

Research performed by ASSIST indicates that changes in

general office lighting levels go largely undetected as long

as light levels stay above 70% of their initial levels, especially

if the changes are gradual. ASSIST recommends defining

useful life as the length of time it takes an LED Light source

to reach 70% of its initial output (L70). For decorative and

accent applications, ASSIST recommends defining useful

life as the length of time it takes an LED Light source to

reach 50% of its initial output (L50)
