Editorial ROUND 11

Round 10 completed in the Riverina Football League and the ladder standings at the moment are quite interesting. The top four sides are all separated by one game which is rather unusual at this stage of the year. Last week the GGGM Lions went to Gumly Oval and inOicted further woes onto the luckless Hawks and defeated them by 130 points. The MCU·E Goannas continued their impressive form of late with an exciting 10 point win over the home side, the Narrandera Eagles. The Griffith Swans travelled to Woodstock Oval, Leeton, and came away with a very handy 13 point win. The Coolamon Grasshoppers had little competition at Maher Oval and handed the Turvey Park Bulldogs a 79 point thumping.

This weeks round, on paper, looks to be quite even with the match of the round at Logan Oval, Ganmain, where the first placed Lions welcome the second placed Griffith Swans. The Lions have been invincible since round one and I'm sure that Shane Lenon will want to keep it that way. They have been playing very good footy and there is no reason why they can't maintain this high level. When a side is full of confidence, like the Lions, they usually can enjoy playing their brand of football and play it very well. They have good players all over the paddock and the Swans will want to be at their very best to topple them. Marc Braybon, George Carroll and Drew Symons will cause plenty of headaches for the Swanntes. Griffith is going along very nicely without causing to much fuss but when you look at the ladder standing's they are in clear second spot. They have a .couple of injury worries but most sides do this time of the year. Brett Owen, Adrian Burns and Ashley Gardener were solid players for them last week but they will require a team effort to topple the Lions. This will definitely reach match of the round status with neither side giving the other to much latitude. Won't be much In it but I think the Lions will their lead on the other sides with a hard fought victory.

Coolamon Grasshoppers welcome the Narrandera Eagles to Kindra Park for what should be an entertaining game. Coolamon bounced back with a vengeance last week and really mauled Turvey Park. They were down a

fair bit on confidence but that would have been restored with that emphatic win. Matt Hard knows only too well that he can't let the Lions get to far ahead and I'm sure he would love another crack at them in September. Nigel Scott, John Carroll and Ryan Chamberlain were good in an even side last week. The Eagles still have a chance to participate in the finals and victory last week would have certainly helped their chances. But that wasn't to be and with 8 games remaining they must win at least half of them. Chris Smith. Kaine Malone and Ben Powell were better players for them last week. I think the Grasshoppers have had there mid season slump and they will not show any mercies to the Eagles at Kindra Park.

The Leeton-Whitton Crows are at home to the MCU· E Goannas, which shapes up as being a very important fixture. The Crows will be desperate for victory to keep them with some sort of chance of a top three finish and the Goannas must keep winning the enhance their chances of playing finals footy again this year. The Crows had a real battle with Griffith last week but could not haul them in. Travis Doyle, Drew Dunscombe and Greg Looby tried to lift them to success over the Swans. The Goannas have been playing with great success over the last few weeks and Rodney Simms will be asking for plenty of the same stuff. They are proving me wrong now as a few weeks ago I had wri tten them off as a finals chance. But to their credit they have bounced back and at this stage of the year you would almost back them to play in the finals. Stace Creasy, Chris Higgins and Neil Lawson have been very good for the Goannas. I'm tipping the Crows only because they are at home but a result either way would nol surprise.

The last game for decision is at Maher Oval where the two bottom sides, Turvey Park and the Eastern Hawks do battle. Going on last week's efforts you could easily predict that this should be a close game. Neither side has, at this stage, cla,m to be a threat to the topsides but they will both be desperate for the four points here. Turvey because they are still a chance to finish in fifth spot and the Eastern Hawks would love to break their drought at the expense of the Bulldogs. Warren Sykes, Jeff Fletcher and Doug Mcl ean were the pick of an ordinary side last week. For the Hawks Steve Bromham, Danny Bromham and young Levi Pollett rated a mention against the Lions. I find it hard to predict with any confidence here but lean towards Turvey to chalk up win number four.

We are over the halfway mark already so all supporters get out there and barrack your team home. Thought of the Week: If you think nobody cares if you're alive try missing a couple of car payments.

TURVEY PARK II IJI ... I ... l)f)fiS The day wasn't pretty and either was the footy last

week at Maher oval in front of our sponsors. Only kicking two goals forthe day was a very disappointing result and one that we must put behind us straight away.Today we can start our quest to gain back some respect. The mug last week went to the 150 gamer Dale Isaac who stood up in his milestone game. Consistent fullback Jeff Fletcher was again outstanding to pick up the bistro 2000 dinner for two.Steve Medlin played his best game for the year at centre halfback to win the club socks. Mi/tons gear votes. 7 C Cerato, 6 W Sykes, 2 T Carroll, 2 J Fletcher, 2 D Mclean.

The seconds were simply outclassed but again tried hard and another win is just round the corner.Playing his second game for the year was Craig Edwards and he p:cked up the mug for a great performance. The socks went to Scott Gill who played his best game for the year in defence. Mi/tons gearvotes.8 C Edwards,5 R Mattingly,4 G Eldridge, 2 A Flanigan, 1 D Maj man.

The under 1 S's provided some joy for the day keeping their impressive form going to record a comfortable win. Ruckman Nathan Sherwood is quickly adapting to the sport and he picked up the ladies auxiliary B.O.G award for his improved performance Michael Dombroski continues to impress to win the club socks. Mi/tons Gear votes. 6 M Dombroski,4 N Flanigan, 4 N Sherwood, 2 L Tooze, 1 J Daniher, 1 C Richards.

The netballers also had a mixed day winning one game and losing two.The C grade started the day off going down in a brave performance 16-20.Winning the mug was Jodie Schiller. B grade got off to a slow start and never recovered going down 14·34.Tanya Toole tried hard all day and was rewarded with the mug for her good performance. The A graders again flew the flag winning 54-37.Georgie Campbell returning from a hand injury was outstanding; she picked up the mug for a fine game.

UPCOMING EVENTS: Remember the ball is on ly three weeks away after the Narrandera game. Make sure every one attends this night of nights, a great night is promised.

Today we welcome the Hawks to Maher oval where we have an opportunity to put last week's embarrassment behind us.The game will be tough and we will need to be at our best to come out on top.

EASTERN Iii.\ l\7l{S Highlight of the Week was the outstanding win by

the B Grade Netball team Winning 20 - 16.The girls were ecstatic with their victory as its long, long, long time since an Eastern Hawks outfit has won a game. Kerry Clarke and Kirsty Lowe were the award winners.A Grade was only trailing by 8 when the game was called off at 3 /4 time due to the weather.Best were Bromwyn Shumack and Nikea Cox.

The 18's slugged it out all day in freezing weather. To ganmain'scredit they really used the conditions well to frustrate our now on running game. The guys race a much tougher task this week against arch rivals Turvey Park. Awards, Mullen Furniture Restoration "Big Night Out" movie passes went to Mitch Leaver, Levi Pollett the Wagga Boat and Sports Centre Towel (his first for the tidy), Ken Vdnderfeen Wd> unchallenged in the Ruck for the Dave Huthwaite Upholstery tenner and Rising Star Matty Suckling won the Eagle Boys Piua award.Three in a row boys keep it up.

The Ressies, were again undermanned, legend Paul Bourne filled the vacant Veteran Slot as Zurn was dropped for not training and bunging on a hammy."The Padre· Brendan Lee provided goal of the day picking a ball off the pack and running 15m, dumped it on his left for a mighty goal (Eagle Boys award). The crowd went wild, breaking into hymn's 27,62 and 28. Kenny M won the Mug plus a free confession voucher, Chenes the Towel and evergreen Stainsey the Des Miller ten strokes with a frilly neck lizard. Coach Darren Cuthbert has pledged his commitment to play for the rest of the year, which will give the boys a real boost.

The Ones, well I suppose if a huge upcoming talent in Levi Pollett can be in the best for the 18' s, double up in the One's, in the process be awarded the Mug, Rivergums Dinner for two.another towel and major Cash award.it pretty much sums up the attitude surrounding this team. The first quarter was good, a couple of goals behind and that was it, we turned it up," oh well we had a bit of a go'. Its painful to watch Smithy trying to fire up so many blank faces. Its even more painful for the supporters and sponsors who pay good money, week in week out to see a bit of"Hawks Spirit'.They deserve more, a bloody lot more. Richo played his usual honest game for the Eagle Boys Pizza. Crackers, Ledge, Scoob, Richo and Bluey received Incentive awards, to inspire them to greater heights this week.

Tonight we venture for drinks at the Kooringal Hotel from 6pm to celebrate the moral lifting victory"s over Turvey park in all five games'GO HAWKS'.

The "JUMBO" Ross award for the 18's is super close with one vote separating Troy Barrett, Levi Pollett and Ken Vdnderfeen.AI/ this and more can be viewed at

GRIFFITH s11r 1INS It was tough going for both supporters and

p layers alike last weekend wi th very very very cold conditions being the prominent conversatton for the day. The footy was hot though so we must stan by thanking the Supports Club for sponsoring the game.

The seniors played well in the first quMter, disappeared for the second and third quarters and came home st rong for a good win in the final quarter. Ben Wade played a strong game w inning the Exies Dinner for two. Adrian Burns lead by example and p layed well for the Snuggle In award. The McDonalds award went to Shane Pound, and the Casella Wines award was given to the big man himself, Dave Curran. Matt Bunn made a great return to football winning the McNabb Caltex Award. Brett Owen was also in fine form both on and off the field winning the mug.

The reserves played hard, but just weren't quite up to the task at the end of the day. Brett Lanyon will be pushing for Senior selection after a great game. He was awarded the AutoPro Award. Nick Heathington was awarded the McDonalds aw~rd and the Casella w ines bottle of Yellow tail went to the ever improving Jamie Codemo. Luke Catanzariti will be looking smart for the ladies this week after his hair cut from Enbee for Hair. The Players Player award went to Chris Conlan.

The U18's continue to improve each week and may be playing in the finals if they keep going the way they are. Clint Monroe shone out this week winning the Synergee Award. The McDonalds award went to Luke Habel, and the Video Ezy Award to Dean Crack. Daniel Creevy played well using his height to advantage. Daniel was given the Canteen Voucher. Andrew Baker was given the much sought after NuFarm Hat.

The Netball was not so successful this week. The A Grade team was good, but not quite good enough going dow n 58 - 26. Sam Clarke played superbly and won the McDonalds Award and Mineta Walker, the Mug. The B Grade team only narrow ly lost. Leeton won 28 - 22, with Nerissa ward winning the mug. C Grade are losing the plot a little they didn't give out any awards, but some said that Kim Savage rlPserved something after being torn away from the love of her li fe during the week. Don't worry he's arrived safely and will be back in a few weeks. The C Grade team went down 25 - 18. The Juniors were struggling from the start , p laying with one player short. They only ended up losing by 2 point s. Michelle Fisher played very well winning the players player award. Jane Bloomfield and Erin Patterson were both given McDonalds Awards.

This week we p lay off for a chance at top spot, taking on the current leaders in Ganmain. It will be a tough road trip but a good chance to test out the team. Our game day sponsors are Bidgee Marine and Mitchell Ag Parts. We would like to thank both business' for supporting us year after year.

MANGOPLAH-COOKARDINIA UNITED EASTLAKES {.C)1'1,.N1l.~ The round al Narrandera was played in blustery and cold conditions

with success to the netball A Gnd B grace and to the first grade footballers. Special thcmk~ from all the players goes out 10 the Mongo Arm) who braved ttse icy conditions to show their loud and proud support throughout the day!

The u1e·s showed a lot of lightmg ~plrit sticking with Nd11aodera

right up to lhree quarter time, bu1 the ~nal quarter let them down with Narrande1a running out 16 point winners. Some ou1s1and1ng efforts from Jost, Hanlon, Brett Howard, Tren1 conalan, Michael Cookt·, dnd Dean S.mbrook helped to keep mango in the game,

In a hard fought slog the seconds struggled until a ,un of five goals pul them back In the game m the third quarter. The final te11n saw Mango run out of legs and Narrandera pile on the goals to win comfortably. In a game dominated for the most part by Narrandera forwards. Ker ry Miles repel ed the unrelenting attack! at fullback tn a best on ground perform, mce. Continuing his excellent form in the midfield this seascn Brad Carroll showed the grit and determination that typifies a Mangoplah footballer. lhe seconds were jJbly assisted by some of the U 1s·s backing up,including Adam Skow and Shaun Bennett 1howmg some great form.

In trying condi1ions tt-e first grade game kept the crowd on the edge of their seats right up untll a few minutes to spare, when Dean Howard snapped a miraculous goal tos.eal a 10-polnt victory for Wango. "he posifr,e attitude shown by each member of 1he side was instrumental In spufring on the ~1de to continued effom ught up to the sealing goal. As Coach Simms emphasized at half-time the conditions would ensure I game dominated by half-backs. this proved uue with half-backmen Stace Creasy, Chris Higgins ind Nell Lawwn playing pivotal roles in the win. After the game Club President Graeme Killatea spoke of 'the spirit of mango' s~owing 1hrough in how the skle kept fighting an day. In a special presentaaon Stace Creasy was awarded the iraugura1 first grade mug and c1lso was awarded the Mangoplah Hotel Oinne1 for two.of which I am sure he will take Emma Coombes on their first date!

In the ne1ball front we had two wins from three in some 1hr1llmg matches.( grc1de played a f,m1as1ic team game but unfortunatel)' went down. The short girls put in a solid for quarters with Jess winning the mug and Megan also having a fan ta sac game.8 grade had a pretty tight game up until halftime but ran awayeasywinners In the finish. In what was a difficult game to choose a Best on Court with everyone hi.wing J blinder, Sarah Logan won the mug for her sensational shooting, also Michelle Hefferenan played an excellent game in centre court.A grade was by fa1 the best game of the day.l hey started oft pretty slow.but by half time they had finished warming up and Narrander.1 d dn't know what hit them. The Mug went to Emma Coombes who was tops in defence and well supported by fracey SC.hult7 - Cole.Mel Smeeth played a solid four quarters in Centre. The girls kept everyone on the edge of their seat right ,1p until the last quarter but ran away victors.Soeveryone (even you John Wilson, who claims he has never real I)· watched the netball!!!) get over to the court; and watch a game or two, becau!l.e there are s::>me of 1he best ;James of netball ever to come form MCUE. with all three teams sitting on

COO LAMON C, llilSS II f) ,,,, I~ llS Last Sunday the Hopper brigade visited Maher

Oval to take on the T.P. Bulldogs. The ones bounced back to the winner's list with a solid win over the home team, and although not a great spectacle, it was great to get the points. Best players for us was the rampaging pie eater Chambo who continues to dominate.Mino reaped the benefits of tying his hair back and clearly gets more of the ball when he can see it and Adam Mckenzie slayed 'em almost as much as he sprayed 'em. Congrats also to all the Rep. Boys.

The two's post match performance was nothing short of outstanding ils they produced a magnificent return to form led by the inspi rational Weany Bradley. On the paddock the boys continued their excellent run of wins. Matt Chambo was dominant around the packs to be named best while the club's fittest player and cross-dressing fanatic Gorbo took out the second award. A. Head, Brad and Matto all played top games as well.

The Ul8's were beaten by a committed opponent, but produced some outstanding individual performances from Trent O'Neill (best). Josh Paul who has been a great acquisition and Simon Crocker. Lets bounce back this week boys.

The Coo Jamon v Turvey always produces great netball contest s. Last Sunday Turvey proved too good for us in A grade going down 54 to 37. Kate Fixter showed her class aga in to take t he mug and she was well supported by Jess Roberts. In B grade we took the points winning 49 to 15 wi th dominant performances from Mindy O'Brien and Deanne Rudd. C grade also won in a close contest 15 to 13. Louise Munro was great for us, as were the Higgo girls. Finally. congrats to all the ladies involved in the Wagga night competition, grand final victory.

NARRANDERA 1~11c;1 ... 1~s Today we travel to the home of the

Grasshoppers, in what we hope is a good and disciplined game of football for all the spectators to watch. Hope the weather is fine and not miserable. Most times when we travel to Coolamon it usually rains or it is rather damp under foot.

In the under 18's last week it was a tough game of footy. The weather could not quite make up its mind, but with the determination to win you boy's came home with the 4 points at the final siren. The award winners for the under 18's were Josh Pearson picking up the Robinson's Dept. Store voucher and Jeremy Orme and James Sullivan collecting the Riverina Pawn Brokers 2nd best on ground and encouragement award respectively. Well done boys.

In the reserve grade you had a convincing win over the Goanna's. But this week it will a more hard of a battle considering that Coolamon are on top of the ladder in the reserve grade. The coach will want you all to play hard, and to make use of the ball when in our forward line. At the end of the day you want to be the ones to come out with the win. I know you reserve guys can do it. Last week the best on ground award went to Pat Robinson followed by Michael Williams and Brent Richens. Congratulations.

In the first grade it was a battle. Consistency and again lack of discipline edge away from some of the players. You knew, to have a dip in the final 5, you had to w in. The weather conditions were unpredictable, and in the end with a little bit more grunt you could have came home with the 4 points. So, let s go o ut today and see if we can have a turn around and lc~rn from our past mistakes, so we can come home with a smile on our faces. Lets have a win over the Grasshoppers. Wouldn't that be a nice feeling! It will give the merl ia something to talk about.Chris Smith took out the honours of been best on the ground, followed by Kaine Malone. Both of these awards are courtesy of the Murrumbidgee Hotel.

Just rem inding all of the players and supporters of the Reunion ball on the 17th July at the Ex services Club. Please return all o f the major raffle prize butts as soon as possible as the winner will be announced on that night.

Up the mighty Imps.

AROUNl1 THE TRAPS • Former Wagga Tigers star player, James

Byrne, is certainly making a name for himself in the VFL with Geelong. Byrne starred for the VFL last weekend when they played Western Australia in Perth and defeated them by 9 points. Byrne played in the centre for the VFL and was j udged as their best player in a winning side.He certainly has had a roller coaster ride and his Clubs, in order of p laying, are:Wagga Tigers, Sydney Swans, Adelaide Crows, Glenelg, South Freman tie and now with Geelong. James cannot p lay for Geelong in the AFL as he is listed purely as a VFL player. He has had a very good career without really making it at the top level. Many good judges believe that if he was 50cm taller he would have been a regular in the AFL. I wonder if a certain local Club has made any overtures towards James to return in a coaching role. I'm sure his experience and knowledge make him a prospective coach.

• Whilst on former locals that are playing with Clubs in other states I will t ouch on Broadbeach Football Club which is in the QAFL Broadbeach are coached by former St Ki Ida and Sydney Swans star, Craig O'Brien. They are current ly on top of the ladder and former locals that play with them include Jason Mooney,Adrian Hill, Brent Fraser and Craig McCough. Jason is attempting a comeback after injury and time will tell if he is successful in his bid. If he does "stand up" his experience will be invaluable. Adrian is playing very well in the forward line and has been one of their better players all year. Brent has p lenty of ability and too should make his presence felt in this high standard competit ion. McCough had coaching st ints in the area with East Wagg a and Temora. He has obvious class and is constantly being shadowed on the field. Assistant coach of Broadbeach is former Brisbane Lions sta r p layer, Marcus Ashcrof t. Ashcroft is not playing but wanted to keep his hand in w ith football at some level. You would

think that he would end up at Brisbane Lions in the future in some coaching or administration role. Phil Hill (Adrian's dad) is also up there on the Gold Coast and he is Finance Director with Labrador Mitsubishi. Its interesting to note from time to time how former local players are doing. We' ll do it again before the years out.

CLUB BILLBOARD • There are a couple of milestones being

reached today at Club level. At Ganmain th is Sunday Scott Hamblin will play his 250th First Grade game for the Ganmain-GGM Lions. Scott has given tremendous service to the Lions and h is resume' reads like this: 250 1st grade games, 1 B Reserves and 21 Under 18's.That's a total of 289 club games. He played in the Premiership sides in 1991, 92, 96 and the runner-up sides of 97 and 2000. He has won a First Grade Best & Fairest and has represented the RFL on numerous occasions. Well done Scott and I hope your 250th is one which you remember and cherish.

• TRYC's Michael Mazzocchi plays h is 50th First Grade game today when the Magpies take on Temora at Nixon Park. Mick is a local at The Rock b ut has been spent t ime away from The Rock through work commitment's and a couple of seasons with Ganmain. Mick married Briony Crozier so I suppose i t is fair that he p layed at least a couple o f games with the Lions. The name Mazzocchi is well known and respected at The Rock and many of the older supporters would remember Mick's dad, Frank, p laying for the Magpies in the 60's and 70's. Well done Mick and I hope you p lay many more for the Pies. One glaring abnormality in your human intelligence• structure is that you follow that team called The Blues · I suppose you are allowed one fault.

i--- Blast From The P ast LI\....._ __ ~ ~\laleyAuol -Assoc. Inc • "FOOTY RECORD" - 2004

This w eek we feature a player who played with several Clubs in t he Wagga area and had success as a Captain-Coach leading Rivcoll to their first ever premiership in 1978. The

former p layer that we p rofile is Peter Ponting.

Details of Playing / Coaching Career: 1970-73 North Wagga under Greg Hardie and later Alan Hayes. Won '73 Premiership. 1974 Ass. Coach to Owen Dunlop at Riverina College. 1975-76 Wagga Tigers under Doug Priest. Premiers '76. 1977 Ass. Coach to Malcolm Briggs at Ju nee. 1978-80 Captain Coach Rivcoll.Won 78 Premiership. 1981-83 Coached South Wagga Tolland. Now retired to golf and t rout fishing.

Awards/ Medals Received: 3 Premierships with 3 different Clubs. 1974 Runner Up Best & Fairest in the CRL to Barry Harper (Temora). Represented Farrer League in 1976 and won NSW Championships beating Sydney in the final after defeating the old South West league and the Hume League.

Favourite Playing Position: Ruck/Rover in my early days when I had some spring in my step, but I did enjoy playing on the backline later on, mostly back flank.

Most Respected Opponents: Dusty Maher (MCU), Laurie Pendrick (Turvey Park), Joey Daby (Ganmain), Bert Haynes (Holbrook), Arthur Cole (MCU), Alan Hayes (Coolamon),Jeff Nimmo !Lockhart).

AFL Club: Essendon - I lived and went to Essendon State School which was situated directly behind Windy Hill.

Current Occupation: Carpenter. maintenance carpenter at Caloola Court.

Where is Football Heading: Because of escalating costs to run a successful club.and with less Juniors to call on due to many more choices / interests for kids these days. This has caused the supporter base to dwindle. Without these 3 vital ingredients I believe more Clubs will fold and or amalgamate in order to survive. Travelling will no longer be a concern,

---

as Clubs will want to be competitive and to be able to hold and create interest and challenges for their supporters. A good example of this is Wagga Tigers joining the Canberra League. Unless there is a major restructure of Count ry Football in NSW (which has been talked about for years) I suspect every Club will fight for their own survival as they have done in the past. But if there is one positive to come out of all this perhaps the teams that are left will be more evenly competitive. Because of fewer teams you will have stronger and more loyal supporters. Does anyone have the answers?

Peter Ponting was not a flashy brilliant footballer but he was a very consistent no nonsense player who would go about his duties without any fuss and would more times than not achieve his results. He played under some very good coaches and obviously learned very well from those coaches, as he was reasonably successful in his coaching career. Peter was very passionate about his footy and this can be veri fied if you ask any of the members of the 1978 Rivcoll Premiership team. He led them to their initial flag and it was a very emotional (and celebratory) couple of days for the Bushpigs. Peter was a st raightahead player who would not shirk any issue and you could never accuse him of running wide, quite the opposite really. Some footballers go through their whole career without winning a premiership but Peter was lucky enough to be a part of 3 flags with three different Clubs. In those victories with North Wagga, Wagga Tigers and Rivcoll he played a pivotal role and can be proud of his effort s in those wins. If you take note of the players that Peter listed as his most respected opponents you will remember that they all were exceptional players in their own right. Peter Ponting can be justifiably proud of his career and his achievements. So if you see Peter around town give him a yell and tell him that you enjoyed his Blast from the Past.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

This year we are featuring a new section called Under the Spotlight. Each week we will be asking a well-known identity w ithin the boundaries of t he MVAFA to comment on several issues relating t o football, politics and many other social issues that constantly confront us. It is meant to be both serious and light hearted and I hope that all readers find it interesting and amusing. This week we feature a very well known identity who has held many important roles w ithin the football fraternity at a local level. He is a past president of the Riverina Football League and Turvey Park as well as a past coach and player in the Riverina. This week we feature Greg Carroll.

Who do you follow in the AFL - Sydney Swans

Do you think that the special conditions

given to Sydney and Brisbane are unfair to

the Melbourne based Clubs - No

Should the AFL Grand Final and Preliminary

Final be played in Melbourne - Yes

AFL followers in Melbourne are fanatical

about their football compared to their Syd

ney counterparts. Why do you think this is so?

Farrer League Editorial Well there definitely is a chill in the air now but

things are really hotting up in the Farrer League as we are well on our way into the second half of the competition for 2004. There is now only four points separating the top four sides and realistically either one of those sides are capable of beating the rest on the day. Last week saw TRYC Magpies continue their good form of late to record a hard fought 8 point win over the CAK Demons at Victoria Park. The Northern Jets had to with stand a fast finishing Temora outfit and they held on for a close 5 point victory. The Marrar Bombers were expected to put forward a bold showing against the North Wagga Saints but that never eventuated and the Saints ran out winners by 74 points.

Nixon Park, Temora, is the venue for the clash between the Kangaroos and the Magpies from The Rock Yerong Creek. The Magpies have collected two big scalps in their last two outings and they have returned to the form that we knew they were capable of. They have been playing a good brand of footy and Matt Carroll will be wanting them to continue in this vein. With only 8 rounds remaining until finals a top two finish is well within their reach. Graham Fellows, Mick Manocchi and Shannon Dohl have been very consistent over the last few weeks. Temora came home like a poor relation last week and were, I'm told, unlucky not to get over the Jets. This would have been disappointing for them but on the other hand would have given them plenty of confidence going into today's game. Scott Blackwell would fully realise that they can play good footy against the top sides when they want to. Kane Johnstone, Damien Ponting and Blackwell were better players for them last week. This will be a real battle and I know that the Mdgpies will not be taking the Kangaroos lightly at all. There was nothing in the first round result - TRYC by 1 point - and I think it will be another close one with TRYC getting home by a couple of points.

The Crossroads Oval, Collingullie, is the venue for the match between the CAK Demons and the Marrar Bombers. The Gullie boys were courageous in defeat last week and they should go into this match with a

positive frame of mind. They are still struggling with injuries and if they can get a full team on the paddock they will be even more dangerous. Chris Gow returned for them last week and when he gains match fitness he will provide plenty of pace around the centre bounces. Doug Bruckner, Bryson Lashbrook and Brett Nairn performed well for the Demons against the Pies. A month ago Marrar were playing reasonable footy but over the last few weeks they slipped back a few notches. They have gone from really pressing the top sides to receiving severe defeats. Wayne Podmore would realise that they are a much better side than they are showing at the moment and if they don't put their best feet forward right now the season will be over. Tom Gorham, Dan Edwards and David Hulm will have to continue their good form if they are to cause an upset. The Bombers will push the Demons but the Gullie boys will be ahead at final siren time by a couple of goats.

The final game for decision is at Peter Hastie Oval, CSU, where the Bushpigs welcome the Northern Jets. Nigel Smith would have to be a linle concerned with the way the Jets fell away last week and he will not want a repeat of the same again. They are co-leaders of the competition and they, like the other top sides, will be striving for a top two finish. Rivcoll ground is not an easy ground to play and they will have to maintain their concentration for the whole game. Rob Harper, David Currie and Damien Papworth were standouts for them last week. The Bushpigs are coming off the bye and should be freshened for this encounter. Craig Seton will relish the opportunity again to play against his former team mates and he will be asking his boys to go out and enjoy their footy and the results may just come their way. They will try but the Jets will be focused for an improved performance this week at the expense of the luckless Bush pigs.

All the crops should be in by now and with a bit of moisture floating around there should be plenty of smiles today at a ground near you. Enjoy Round 11 of the Farrer Football League. Thought of the Week: The Taxation Department must love poor people - it creates so many of them.

TEMORA l{1lN f,1lllf)f)S Last Saturday was absolutely gut wrenching

but I guess the lesson is you can't give away a 40-point start and a truckload of SO metre penalties aga inst quality opposition. The two's came up against a good side but battled it out.

No prizes for guessing Robbie McCormack won the Termo Award and five votes in conditions well suited to the in and unders. Recruit Nathan Dwyer proved he is a valuable acquisition and took 4 votes in the Temora Truck & Trailer Sales Award. Three votes wen to Scott Sinclair who is putting some good form together while Rowdy showed he wont be in the twos for long by getting the two votes.

The ones showed they are as good as anyone provided the belief & desire are there. Josh Mackenzie played his best game for the club yet with 5 goals, 5 votes and the Red Steer award Boof Krause continued his excellent form at both ends of the ground to get the four votes. Three votes went to the dependable veteran Andrew Derrick who loves playing on his relatives, while BradTarbit had a terrific debut giving us p lenty of drive in t he middle to get the two votes. By now you should all have your tickets organised for tonight's Ball, so there's no need for me to remind you. Suffice to say that I'll see you all there.

To all those who are interested, Ian Oliver is now officially the shortest kick in the world. Any 8 year olds who want a crack at the title should be at Nixon Park at 8pm on Thursday.

Finally let's make sure we have plenty to celebrate at the Ball tonight by scoring two wins over the topside.

THE ROCK-YERONG CREEK

How bad was the weather last Saturday, thankfully the seniors recorded another terrific win to help take the supporters minds off the cold.

The reserves put a terrific effort against an experienced Collingullie side in at times appalling conditions. Not only did the hail make it difficult for the players but it was too much for our Boundary Umpire, Brodie, who took off to the safety of his car for the remainder of the match. After the game hungry again stressed the importance of training so get behind him.Nathan Kelly relished in the conditions to pick up the Verda & Porky Mug, Craig Taylor will don the Ag N Vet Hat after another Captains game.

The ladies $10 awards went to Josh Veliscek and Andrew Chaplin who both never play a bad game.

What can you say about the seniors, the last 2 wins have been superb and must give the seniors a huge boost of confidence, whilst also cautious as they prepare for yet another huge battle. The level of commitment shown by each player makes it a pleasure to watch. The Rock Butchery Mug for a superb display of wet weather marking and confident football went to Graham Fellows. Bryan Ball took his well earnt run in the seniors and produced a terrific game that gave us plenty of run and picked up the Woodstock Shirt. Shane Brown was in the thick of the action all game; his drive gave us plenty of the ball and won the Woodstock Bag.The Mouse Hunter.nm Pankhurst, was rock solid at CHF, contesting everything that came his way and he claimed the Home Dinner. The highlight of last weeks senior game had to be seeing our runner, Strop, laying face down in the wet after trying to perform a blind turn in front of the crowd.Rumour has it that it was pregnant netballers who ate all the hot chips.

Well done to all the netballers who provided a fantastic Pasta & Piua meal last Saturday night and to Knighta, Spank and Simmo for organizing the Mouse Races which was a great success. The Super Magpies Luncheon will be held on the 3nt04, the Rivcoll game starting at 12.00pm. Quote of the week - Harry talking to Janine & Fitzy.

"Dad, are you coming to watch the footy or are you going to watch this crap (the netball)'.

Well done to Mick Mazzocchi who plays his SO'h senior game today.

Another big test for TRYC Football & Netball Clubs today againstTemora at home. The netballers will be fired up after their break and as they know Temora at home are hard to beat.Good luck to the A,B & C Grade.

The reserves will need every player to stand tall against a strong Temora side, but if you all follow Hungry's lead you will be in with a chance of victory.

The seniors need to win today not only to keep in contention for a top 2 finish but not to undo all the good work that has gone into achieving the last 2 fabulous wins. If they continue to show the same 4 quarters of passion and commitment of the last 2 weeks then there is no reason we wont hear the club song again.

RIVCOLL (C.s.u.) 111; s 111, 1 c;s l Well Pig fans after a nice lwo-week break, except for

those who had exams, the footy & netball is back and everybody is out to show the improvement we have made from the first half of the year.

In our last game against Temora, the Reserves were very disappointing and copped a hiding from the opposition. Despite having some good players available, some of the boys forgot that you actually have to have 16 players all working together before you can actually win a game. Best players were Brad Gorman, who won the mug, Kerrin Potty, Michael · wally• Collins, Smokin' Joey Rodway and Justin Graham.

The Seniors had a solid first half and were within striking distance al half time. After the long break the boys came out and dominaled for 20 minutes before the opposition scored a couple of late goals to have a nice break at the last change and they continued on with it in the last quarter to run out convincing winners. As has been the case in other games during the year, we showed we can match 11 with teams but don't have the le_gs to carry us for a full game. Best players were captain James Walsh, who won the mug, coach Craig Seton, Ben Bussell, Chris Egan, Jack Wall and Ben Percy.

The net ballers continue to be our shining light this year and will make sure that Rivcoll is represented in some way during the finals series. C grade continue their scintillating form winning 51 to 28. The votes went to i3) Sarah Bowen (2) Ros O'Connell (1) Nicola Taylor. B grade are also showing that they are a genuine premiership threat winning 65 to 36.The votes went to (3) Onika Walters (2) Sam Doyle (1) Stacey Skinner. A grade were competitive for most of lhe game but went 26 to 41.The votes went to (3) Katie Murfett (2) Julia Duff (1) Bree Forrester.

A quick call inlo the Railway Hotel to have a beer with Wally's parents then it was on our way for what was a very interesting bus trip as always, with plenty of drinking.singing, laughter, and did I say drinking? Many thanks to the hospitality of the Collins' and to our bus driver Dave for being great bloke.

Don't forget that membership should be paid up by now. There are still some club shirts available so get in and pay our membership to receive your FREE club shirt. You also need to pay for your jumper before the last game as well. See Gleeso or Rocket if you have any questions. We have Rubix Cube night after the Marrar game at the Red Lion on July I 0. More details next week.

This. week we welcome the Jets to Bushpig Park, and seeing them outfi tted in their new jumpers. The Reserves wil l be looking to keep their finals chances alive and Seniors will be looking to redeem themselves after the last time we met. The netballers will be out to cement their positions in the top four and have a great chance to that this week. Best of luck to everyone.

ARDLETHAN / APM N () ll'l,Hl~llN ,Jl~'l,S Well a win is a win! We have the four points, but first

grade should never have got as close as it did. The last two weeks show we will have to tighten up in the last quarter. Again we got off to a good start and built up a good lead, players to play well & win the awards were: Jamie Wild, Ben Cassidy, Allan Edis, Dave Curie, Bernie Quade, Nigel Smith.

5.4.3.2.1 votes went to Rob Harper 5, Dave Currie 4, Damien Papworth 3, Nigel Smith 2, Dean Jamieson 1. Jamie Wild kicked 4 of our goals.

The reserve grade played most of their game in cold wet conditions but none of the farmers were complaining. The Jetsstarted well and kept it up to record a convincing win. Award Winners were Marty Quade, Cameron Furphy, Wally Gaynor, Will Wyatt & Terry Walker.

5.4.3.2. 1. votes went to Cameron Furphy 5, Wally Gaynor 4, Will Wyatt 3, Marty Quade 2, Gerard O'Brien 1. Will Wyatt kicked 3 of our goals.

Despite only winning one of the four games of netball played against Temora last weekend, all of our teams played competitive matches against quality opposition in wet and rainy conditions. The Ariah Park Mirrool Juniors played extremely well and managed to outscore their opponents in the last quarter. The girls were defeated 31 -14. Grace French won the McDonald's award and Emma Ryall won the socks. Our( graders were narrowly defeated 25-20. Stacey Bundy played a great game In the goal circle and won the McDermott's award whilst Brooke Deacon played terrific in defence and won the IGA award. B grade fought hard all game and were also narrowly defeated 30-25. Stacey Hoare and Tenneil Horan played great games in defence and won the mug and socks respectively. Our A graders were the first team to successfully defeatTemora this season. The girls played a great game and recorded a convincing 41-19 win.Stacey Cox-Smith played fantastic in the centre court and won the mug whilst Michelle Kelly was solid in defence and won the socks.

Our'Drought Breaking'dinner on Saturday night was a huge success. Meal was great. Adam Schneider was a hit and the music was enjoyed by all. A big thank you to those who put in the effort to organise it all, decorate the hall & then clean up afterwards.

Today we take on Rivcoll on their home ground; this is never an easy task as there is a few more kilometres to run on this ground to most others. So four quarters of football is vital in both games.

COLLINGULLIE-ASHMONT-KAPOOKA I) I~ )I() N s l Last week was a round of mixed emotions

for the club as reserve grade regained some momentum with a win but first grade went down in tough conditions at Victoria Park.

In the reserves, Lieutenant-General Peter Buckley, 40, had another cracking game at full forward, kicking five to lead the boys to a muchneeded 62 point win over The Rock. The win was a great result considering the struggle we had to make up the numbers and the horrific weather condit ions, wh ich included a short burst of hail. The side was helped in no small part by the inclusion of under 16 players James Richter, Josh Taylor, and Mini Me in key positions. Puzzlehead rucked all day to win the mug, and had a great game.

In the firsts things weren't as rosy, with the side struggling to gel. Despite having a number of top line players missing, the eight point loss hurt as it so easily could have been a win. The Flying Wingman had a good game up front, kicking three, w hile Beefy Brad Aiken was at h is usual best, kicking a two goals including a memorable sideline effort. Dougy Bruckner was sensational across the ground, while Bryson Lashbrook earned the mug and his second shiner of the season with a strong performance on De Jong. Nairny had a great game, rucking over his opponent, and was ably assisted by the Chief, who decided he should get a mention.

Doug Bruckner summed it up in the sheds when he called for more commitment- because that's what we need if we're going to make it three in a row. So let's have a real dip today against Marrar and try and turn the club's fortunes around. Get to training, and more importantly, get back to the pub after the game.

MARRAR IIC))llll~llS Last week was a very emotional day for our club;

we saluted our mate Juicy, with a presentation to Val & Johnny of Juice's No 2 Marrar Guernsey and a minute's silence. Thanks to the Saints for your co-operation and understanding. Although every bloke out on Langtry Oval (for our first game at home of the season) wanted a win badly,it just wasn't to be.The Saints came out guns blazing and we just couldn't peg them back in the One,. Big Tommy rucked and roved all day getting the votes to win the Mug.Clarkey shone yet again to take the $50, Hulmy S30 and Freddy $20. On a more encouraging note the Magoos put it to the top of the table Saints just going down by a couple of goals. Award winners were: Mug Stibby, D42 Cat.and 6 pack to Crouchy. Well done to Harres boys. A big pat on the back for all the young blokes that stood up over the weekend, you are the future of our club.

Now to the netball. .. Meez's A grade girls were pumped for a close game. The combinations are coming together in both defence and attack and that was evident on Saturday. The scores were even until half time, and then our girls took control winning comfortably in the end by 11 goals. Meg Boynton played a blinder in WD, taking more intercepts than Ryan Girdler on a good day, and she won the Mug and D42. Netball Supporter 6 pack goes to Kaz Mohr, cheers.

Now to our social events. Due to wet weather we've postponed the Bonfire until July 17"', our home game against the Jets. The Goods and Services Auction is on next Saturday following our home game against Temora. If you haven't donated goods or services yet, Harro and Jenko will be around this week to see everyone. It is really important that all netballers and footballers make a contribution to this night to ensure it is a success.

On July 24m our home game against The Rock we will be having the Mock Deb Ball so get your outfits ready, this will be a huge night. A big thank you to Magoo & Helen for accommodating all of us on Saturday due to the wet weather. Thanks also to those people that brought the fire buckets and wood to the pub and the helpers with the BBQ, a great club effort.

Don't forget memberships need to be paid, so see

Russell or a committee memberto pay yours. This week we go to Crossroads Oval at Collingullie for 2 grades of footy. Net ballers have a week off, there will probably be some fairly green looking netballers around today as they had a bonding session last night, so go easy on them. So ... lets grit our teeth and give our best.
