We’ve reached a decade! This January we celebrate 10 years of Walking for Health in North Somerset! Back in late 2006 a band of local people responded to an advert looking for volunteers to help launch and support a brand new walking initiative in our area. Those handful of proactive, community-friendly faces (pictured below) helped to kick-start the health walks across North Somerset – the first of which set out in January 2007. A decade later, many of those initial volunteers are still involved in the programme and have given so much time and energy to helping local people to be active and to enjoy regular, sociable walks that are free to all!

Can you spot one of your own walk leaders…If ever there was a time to appreciate the efforts of our health walk leaders, back markers, administrators or anyone else who has supported our health walks, it’s now. Here’s to many more years of gentle strolls, friendly chats and big smiles! To our health walk volunteers – THANK YOU

Long Ashton joins the health walk scheme We’re very pleased to announce the launch of a new health walk group in Long Ashton starting this New Year! Following our volunteer training session in September a number of attendees have got together to set up a regular health walk taking place every Monday from 16 January 2017. It’s a great chance to explore Long Ashton while supporting a friendly walking group. The walk sets off at 10.30am from the café at Long Ashton Community Centre.

Change4Life launches new Be Food Smart campaign A new campaign that highlights the surprising amount of sugar, saturated fat and salt found in everyday food and drink has been launched to encourage parents to ‘Be Food Smart’. Childhood obesity is a growing issue with figures showing that in England, more than 1 in 4 children aged 4-to 5-years-old and more than 1 in 3 children aged 10 and 11-years-old are overweight or obese. Visually, our kids might seem fine but too much sugar and saturated fat can lead to the build-up of harmful fat on the inside that we can’t see. Fat around their vital organs can cause weight gain and serious diseases in the future, like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, or even some cancers. Over time, eating too much salt can also raise our blood pressure putting us at risk of heart disease and stroke. The Be Food Smart campaign empowers families to take control of their diet and protect their children from the harmful effects of consuming too much sugar, saturated fat and salt. The free app works by scanning the barcode of products, revealing how much sugar, saturated fat and salt is inside and encourages users to make healthier choices. The Be Food Smart app has something for everyone, like tips and suggestions for adults, new food detective activities for the kids and fun ‘mini-missions’ for the whole family. The Be Food Smart app is available from the iTunes store or Google Play. Search Change4Life for more information.

Sweet potato shepherd’s pie Prep time: 25 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour and 20 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 2 onions, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped 2 carrots, grated or finely sliced 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaf 400g pack extra-lean minced lamb or beef 85g red lentil 350g swede, diced 2tbsp plain flour 750ml reduced-salt beef stock 200ml red wine 350g sweet potato, diced 150g 0% plain probiotic yogurt Generous grating of nutmeg Green vegetables to serve Method 1. Heat the oil in a large pan, then fry the onions for 6 mins until starting to turn golden. Add the

garlic, carrots and thyme, and cook for 4 mins more. Stir in the mince, breaking it up with the spoon. When it has turned brown, add the lentils and swede with the flour. Cook for 1-2 mins, then gradually add the stock and red wine. Cover and simmer for 35-40 mins.

2. Meanwhile, boil all the potatoes for 15-20 mins until tender, then drain and mash with the yogurt, nutmeg and black pepper.
