STEPS TO HELP WATER QUALITY

Mountville Memorial Day Parade Volunteer Form

■ Plant trees and other nativevegetation to promote waterinfiltration. Trees also providenatural cooling in the summertimeto help minimize energy use. If your property borders a stream, plant trees along its banks. Treeshelp to stabilize the banks and fi lterexcess nutrients from the water.

■ Fertilize your lawn only whenneeded to establish vegetation orwhen called for by a soil test. Many lawns may not need to be fertilizedat all, especially with phosphorous. When fertilizer is applied, use a spreader that has been recently cal ibrated and apply at theminimum recommended area atthe proper time.

■ Reduce energy consumptionbecause power plants are a signifi cant contributor of nitrogento the the atmosphere in the formof NOx. NOx is then deposited onland by rainfall and is a source ofexcessive nitrogen in our localwater ways and the Bay.

■ Do not connect sumpumps, cellar drainsor roof drains to thesanitary sewer system.Disconnect them if they are already connected.Modern sanitary sewersare designed to handlesewage only, not storm-water. Stormwater canoverwhelm a sanitary sewersystem, straining treatmentplant capacity and potentiacausing sewer overfl ows.

■ Minimize use of the garbagedisposal, and utilize a backyardcomposter instead. It reducesthe burden on sewer systems andthe compost is a good source of fertilizer for gardens.

■ Compost grassclippings and autumnleaves. They are a natural source of fertilizer and organicmatter for your lawnand the trees from

which they came.

■ Minimize stormwateroff from your property

– utilize rain barrels, raingardens and pervious surfaces topromote infi ltration of stormwater, thereby fi ltering excessive nutrientsinstead of directly depositing theminto storm drains and waterways.
